Small and tidy HP miniwank
Honestly? This is barely a wank. A wanklet. If not for the outraged cries of the devoted Harry Potter fans, this would have been just a series of amusing articles in the media.

The Time Magazine interviews JK Rowling and manages to make a number of inaccurate statements about the fantasy genre and fantasy writers.

BBC comments on Terry Pratchett's rather sarcastic letter to the Sunday Times that pokes fun at inaccurate reporting and, rather cheekily, at JKR Herself.

Little wank so far, until we get to the comments on Leaky Cauldron. Apparently Pratchett is just jealous of JKR's fame and fortune!

Thank you, Neil Gaiman, for putting things in perspective again.

Edit: And the same sad song over at MuggleNet. Also, thanks to [info]also_not_a_pipe, a link to the wank from the other side.

Revenge of the edit: From the blog of [info]diane_duane comes Pterry's response. [Insert some rather OT Rihannsu-flavoured squee, because, well, Diane Duane.]

Wow, they get incredible mileage out of an offhand comment that seems aimed more at the bookselling industry than at Rowling herself.

See, I always thought of Rowling's works as magical realism, not fantasy. At the very least, I thought they had more in common with realistic fiction than fantasy, given their reliance on cliches of boarding school stories more than their use of unicorns.

But I'm probably wrong.

My fandom makes me cry.
I think the responses to all this prove that my fandom can't read and think critically more so than anyone shipping H/Hr does =P

Dear lord.
At elas tthere are some levelheads in there.

All this also makes me cry for the media, but I've doing that for ages now.

There's a big chance that if someone thinks HP is "teh best book EVAR like totally!", HP is the only book they've read ever. That'd explain their bragging with "Terry who? Never heard of him lol ecks dee ecks dee!!!!"

I like how Terry must automatically be jealous. Sure, JKR almost certainly makes tons more than he does. But he also has a shitload of literary acclaim that she has not yet matched.

*waves the Pterry flag*

Besides, he wasn't even really bitching at JKR. Bitches can't read, can they.

You know, it's really sad that I read the comments at [info]discworld and then the ones at Mugglenet and could only think "Gee, the HP fans sound like ten year olds with the 'just jealous!' comment" (which I know is not accurate ^.^;; )
Folks, stop making your fandom look bad. And I'm sure JKR and Pratchett aren't having a little flame war on some random field by writing nasty notes to one another. Really.

Um... um... I think when they were talking about knights and crap, they confused fantasy as a genre with the subgenre of high fantasy. Either way... um... Terry Pratchet... he's famous for something... something that... is longer than Harry Potter... and his writing... it's... well, good. I love HP, but I think at this point the fanon is better than the canon and really, I love it, but... Terry Pratchet is a better writer... let's just face it.

Anyway, that artical about her seems heavily slanted and poorly written anyway, so I think it's the reason for all this wank in the first place... really stupid.

PS-I love Neil Gaiman for bringing up Rocket Man (amoung other things). The End.

I like how the fans on Mugglenet are so ready to KILL Terry Pratchett ("He was mean to Jo! Let's kill him!"). I'm sure JKR would approve of her fans acting as murderers on her behalf, because, you know, that's what true fans do!

These are batshit Potter fans. They'll get offended over anything that doesn't give absolute praise to Rowling (unless it is they themselves doing the "ROWLING'S A TURD" squealing, then it's encouraged), even if the "tee-hee-hee" of the statement is clear as a freshly waxed bikini area. Frankly, I think Pterry's point was a good one, and his little barb was funny. ... I'm not biased. Oh, heavens someplace, no, never biased.

P to the S: I also agree with everyone else about Gneil. Why has he not been crowned King of All Things? I consider this a gross miscarriage of justice.

Man, we're all crazy round here. You know, I didn't read the Mugglenet or Leaky Cauldron comments, because those sites take too damn long to download. It's amazing to think that there are times when having a crank-handle dialup connection helps me to avoid stress and brain-burst. Also, if asked to choose, I would say that I prefer the Discworld novels, even though the Harry Potter fandom cannot be matched for quality "WTF?" madness. If only Discworld fandom was half as funny.

My favorite comment from Mugglenet:

Pleh! When you invent a story half as brilliant as JK's, THEN you can complain!

In other words...? Complain away, Pterry. For you have given us Discworld, and in my eyes that's far more than enough license to say what you like.

This wank makes me love Pratchett & Gaiman just that lovely little bit more. *wanders off to read Good Omens again*

However, I always wondered if Hatful of Sky & Wee Free Men were taking swipes at HP in their text. Or maybe reading Pratchett's no-nonsense take on magic after HP just makes it look like that.

Would have been pretty funny to see the Potter fans trying to flame him....

you know, I loathe terry pratchett's books - I think they're overrated and way too cutesy. I also dislike fantasy and genre writing in general and think it's more or less utter useless crap.

but as usual, despite all this, the HP fandom STILL makes it completely impossible to side with them. even a little bit. it's really kind of amazing.

I would just like to apologize on behalf of the Potter fandom. We're not all complete nutters, really. And some of us actually DO know who Terry Pratchett is, and enjoy his works!

Sometimes I think the world would be a better (yet sadly less wanky) place if half the Potter fandom imploded upon itself.

The fandom thinks Pratchett's being wanky?

Wonder what their reaction would've been to the aftermath of the 2000 Hugos, when GRRM jokingly (or drunkenly?) decapitated Harry in effigy and posted a picture of it on his website.

Brian Aldiss has been writing stuff that I've been missing. I have to thank Terry Pratchett for the heads up.

As for the letter, the worst he seemed to be accusing JKR of is not wanting to identify with the fantasy genre.

There are Pratchett fans I've seen who put me off a little with saying he writes "real, literary fantasy, not like HP," *(This was said on an HP group) but like many I like both.
