Fanficrants, you amaze me again!
Over at [info]fanficrants, [info]grand_sealink rants about the Howl's Moving Castle fandom.

Included in the rant:
1. The Prince was NEVER in love with Sophie. Shut up.
2. It's MICHAEL. Not Markle. Not Markl. MICHAEL. (YES, you stupid bastards, Hayao Miyazaki and/or fansubbers GOT. IT. WRONG.
3. Sophie has TWO sisters, not three, not eight, not 932857293875. Their names are Martha and Lettie.

HORRAY FOR ELITISM!

What [info]grand_sealink fails to realize is that she was ranting about how inaccurate Miyazaki's movie is compared to the book, and people go crazy. Well, not so crazy as one can get when calling another person an elitist.

And of course, [info]grand_sealink comes to defend herself, but instead of editing her post, leaves it in the comments where no one is likely to see. (besides [info]luna_hoshino, who seems to be moving in for the kill.)

Today's lesson: Think before you act and make sure you specify your "canon". Not everyone has read the Howl's Moving Castle book, so you shouldn't go around all high-nosed about it when the fangirls get it wrong.

Not to be contrary, but this doesn't really seem like much wanking to me. I mean, grand_sealink is obviously a wanker, but there's not really any counter-wank, since all the replies are a, very reasonable, and b, unanimously agree that grand_sealink is a shmuck.

I think it counts because the OP was being wanky, that the commenters weren't is good for them but I don't think it detracts from the OPs wank.

IMO of course.

Ick. I love the book. I also thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It's different, to be sure, but the movie is great in itself. I like both, even if I mostly see them as different stories.

As for Markl vs. Michael...I like both, regardless if Markl was a replacement for Michael or his anime adaptation. Besides, I was more WTF over Mrs. Suliman. 'Course, this is mostly because the first reference to her was in something that was talking about an implied sexual angle between Mrs. Suliman and Howl. Naturally, I didn't read the "Mrs." part the first time around. My brain promptly broke.

On a final note, Diana Wynne Jones approved of what Miyazaki-sensei did with her story. That's good enough for me.

Yeah, I also love both book and movie. They're telling basically different stories, but they're both GOOD stories, so... I don't care.

And judging by all the wanky froth, it's a lot more work to be all ZOMGCANONFREAKOUT. Viva the unwanky lazy!

Did she? That's good to hear, because - while I'm not sure I'd want Miyazaki being the one for all of 'em - having more well animated Diana Wynne Jones would be a nice thing.

Or even a live action Chrestomanci. *sigh*

Eh, I just thought it wasn't worth reporting, the 130 commenter.

Besides, I'm not sure a fandom was involved with the wanking that went on. It was just a big "ur a bully!!!" fest, you know?

(then again, I didn't read all of it... so I'm not sure.)

Their Love is so canon
(Anonymous)
2005-08-02 02:21 pm UTC (link)
Am I the only one who saw the movie (twice!) and read the book and still have absolutely no idea why Howl fell in love with Safie? In the movie Howl is set up a lot better to show that he likes Sophie (giving her access to his own flower-strewn private place?) and keeping the bomb from exploding. Everything he seems to do after a point is just for her.

But why?!?

Why does he love her? She doesn't seem to do anything out of the ordinary. Just cleans his house and puts up with his whinning, bitchy ass.

Disclaimer: I'm in love with Howl so any remarks that seem to point otherwise is my frustration speaking.

Let's hope that some of these people never ever get their hands on some of the scary doujinshi I've found. Crazy mixings of book and movie canon are made just that much better when you have Markl sleeping with Howl. >_0

Actually, if you really want to rant about inconsistencies, try asking some of the more anal HMC cosplayers about the crazy inconsistencies in the animation.
