HP Conference + Slash Wank
So Accio UK happened. But some people aren't happy.

There was no discussion of slash! My fellow fen have betrayed me OH NOES!

Y'know, just change a few words, and it could be shrieks of horror over the sinking of the Good Ship HMS Harmony/Pumpkin Pie all over again.

"betraying what fandom means to so many of us"

Of course. How can we forget that the main focus of fandom is all about the imaginary mansex? It isn't as though slash fans focus on anything else. We're all just smut loving nymphos.

You know, this concept could easily be applied to a school bake sale. It all begins when one person complains about the lack of non peanut butter treats. She'd claim that the organizers betrayed the students by creating such a chocolate centric event. Some people blame the principle's well known anti-peanut bias, since he could very well shut the bakesale down. One of the organizers claim that the reason they had no peanut butter treats was because nobody donated them to the bakesale. Meanwhile, we're sitting here with our toffee and brownies, watching this and wondering idly if there's any milk left.

Hey, I had to make a website about a conference a few weeks ago for a university course. I chose to do a wizarding conference. Dammit, I could've used that Accio site as an example. I should google more often.

Anyway, er, slashers should stop whinging and start writing more hot porn. Conquer the internet, one smutfic at a time.

Related article on Accio in the guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1540888,00.html

"Kye's girlfriend Jenna, a Viking in a bright green cape, bounces up to tell me about slash fiction, which she writes for the pleasure of her online friends. "Slash is stories about sexual encounters between characters in Harry Potter, written by fans." She stops to stare covetously at an I Love Ron! T-shirt. (Ron is Harry's best friend.) "Slash began with Star Trek and stories about Captain Kirk and Mr Spock making love on the Starship Enterprise," she says. "It was called Kirk slash Spock - hence the name. I've written online stories about Snape and Lockheart [both professors at Hogwarts], and Snape and Harry. But I'm just one of hundreds of thousands." You mean there is Albus Dumbledore pornography on the web? "Yes!" she squeaks. "There are different pairings: Snape and Lucius; Harry and Draco; Dumbledore and Harry; even Dumbledore and Fawkes." Fawkes is a bird. "Someone wrote a love story about Draco and a giant squid. Personally I think the author overused the term 'fishy flesh'."

Jenna says the conference is teeming with slash authors, but when I mention this to the organisers they turn beige with fright. "There is no slash here," they insist. "It is banned at the request of Warner Brothers. Harry Potter is a children's book.""

I guess I can understand the annoyance (because hey, the books should hardly be WB's jurisdiction - how come they can dictate what the FAN conference talks about?) but... all this wank? Meh.

(Anonymous)

While sure, I find this wanky-as-all-get-out in terms of fandom...but from an academic standpoint it seems less a matter of "wank" than one of "expressing a legitimate concern in perhaps a less-than-ideal manner."

If a conference bills itself as open to -- emphasizing, even -- academic analysis of a given set of texts, it seems rather aggressively inappropriate to disallow contributions from a single, academically-mainstream critical approach. If only a restricted range analytical methodologies are to be allowed, it's not an open academic conference.

I enjoy slash but OMG it does not encompass all that is fandom! People, please, understand that a good portion of the modern world is very touchy about GAY GERMS and other crap like that, and even at a fandom event it's not totally unheard of for slash/yaoi/ect to be swept under the rug and ignored. Even at anime conventions, hives of "OMG TEH KAWAII!!!11" fangirls have to keep their events to the later hours in the night to avoid the kiddies, and it's generally ignored by the rest of the staff. AAAHHHHH.

I'll be the first to call it when HP fandom is being wanky, but I don't actually think this is. As a mouse pointed out, Accio, like Nimbus, was billed as an academic conference. Saying, "We're going to look at the text and various aspects of fandom, but OMG NOT THAT ICKY BUTTSEX!!! is disingenous at best. When WB is allowed to dictate the acceptable topics for discussion, that's even more problematic.

This wank amuses me not. Is this even HP fandom? There's way too much rational discussion and consideration of other viewpoints.

This caught my eye, though:

The stated aim of this conference was academic analysis of the texts by fen.

If the con has pretensions to academia, then they need more slash, not less. Real academics *live* to upset people. It's one of the few tangible signs they get that anyone ever read any of their damn papers.

This sounds very familiar. Paradoxically, in Renee Ward's paper 'Shape-shifting, Identity, and Change in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', the very issues underpinning queer analysis were explored in thorough detail without once referring to queer theory.

I guess this shows my mindset regarding anything in the HP fandom, but I read "shape-shifting" as "Snape-shifting."

I wouldn't have been bothered had it simply been the case that nobody there was interested in queer readings of the novels (I say this as someone who attended, had a fabulous time, and assumed that the lack of mention of anything other than heterosexual relationships was a bizarre coincidence); what does bother me is that the WB was perfectly happy to allow speculation and discussion of 'shipping' as long as it was only discussion of heterosexual relationships -- talking about homosexual relationships and homosexuality in the text was banned by them.

I think this is rather more serious than people being upset by their pet theories being dismissed or ignored, or their favourite 'ships' being slammed -- it's that these things were actively censored. Which, uh, for an adult-only academic conference? Just a teeeeeeny bit worrying, I feel. (And also offensive -- we're effectively being told that there's something wrong (morally, I assume) with talking about queer issues in relation to this book.)

(Incidentally, had the WB put out an edict banning Harmonians/PumpkinPiers from talking about H/Hr at Accio I'd be just as concerned, even though I cannot stand H/Hr. It's not a 'wah, fen have betrayed me', it's a 'censorship is not cool'.)

I don't see this as wank. If the Accio folks didn't want smut, they should have specified no smut. To banninate slash -- even, one assumes, PG-rated slash -- is just nasty. Nasty and phobic. Bully for [info]sine_que_non67 for calling 'em on it, sez I.

... *reads*

Okay. Actually, I read only some of it. I got bored with the I'm So Oppressed themes of the wank.

And my heart goes out to the poor committee that has to deal with this sort of response when they do NOT have the money to tell the WB to go fuck themselves.

*sad emo tear for the slashers*

They [werewolves] are the outlaws; rejected by one culture, they make their own counterculture. Remus can only have space in the Wizarding community as long as he keeps his mouth shut.
[...] Discredited, Harry can be rendered invisible like other difficult creatures. Harry and Lupin both upset the flawed taxonomies of the Wizarding World.
[...] There is an understanding of identity as labile and not fixed in JKR's books.'

Christ, what a load of twaddle. I still can't believe people spend their time thinking up this shit.

I'm sorry to all the slashers out there, but I can't believe people actually seriously think there are real slash issues to discuss that are present in the books.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but from what I've read throughout the years and throughout the wank after book 6, sane people haven't expected their slashy fantasies to come through in canon. Or am I wrong? I mean, if the point of the conference or ship speculations was to focus on canon, why would they be discussing slash? If they were discussing fanfiction and the phenomenon behind it, sure, but as far as I can tell they weren't. They were discussing canon relationships and their possibilities.

If you want to read your own subtext into the book or create your fantasies, fine, but I seriously doubt Rowling had any such intentions.

*shrug* I'm the last person to want further oppression of people of alternate sexual orientations and gender situations, with about 80% of the people I know being queer. There's no fear of the manlove from this angle. But to me, this sounds like people are making a hippogriff out of a Pigwidgeon-- to use Potter terms for the metaphor.

So much whining over something that's purely a fan creation/fantasy anyway. It doesn't make any sense.

Now, if the WB had actually specifically said no slash discussion, then that's quite phobic of them. However, I doubt they wrote a detailed letter to the leaders of Accio detailing no mansex. Like I said, if the panel was supposed to be about a discussion of canon, it's unrealistic to expect slashy content. I also don't see why the wanker felt so 'out of place' when they, self-admittedly, were surrounded by fellow slash fans.

Perhaps it's simply because I'm not that familiar with Accio, but I don't see a reason for the crying essay about Why My Ships Didn't Get Talked About Even If They Aren't Present In Canon.

I mean honestly, am I missing something? Are these not mass-marketed children's books? I mean, I'm all for slowly integrating the notion of queer possibilities into the society and making it so kids and teenagers are more comfortable with the notion that it's quite alright, but come now.

Have people forgotten that these are Harry Potter books? Not adult books? And that they were written in this time period and meant to be released en masse to children IN this time period? Am I taking crazy pills?
