Gamers + Advertising = Wank
Unfortunatly, I missed the beginning of this, so I have to guess at what happened.

Roleplayers is the LJ community for all thigns roleplaying. Thus, it attracts wank every so often out of a law of gamer psychology (or something).

_grimtales_ apparently posted an ad for an RPG product he wrote on the community. The community has anti-ad rules, but ones that specifically mentioned no advertising for games people were playing/running. People reacted badly, and he took the post down. Later, he asked the mods, in a community post, could you please clarify the anti-ad rules, because I think product-advertising should be allowed.

Needless to say, some of the other members reacted badly to this post as well. We get such stunning original comments such as the 'world's smallest violin' pixel art/smily thing (repeatedly!), accusations of posting to a community just to back up a friend in an argument, definition-posting, Karl Rove (no Hitler/Osama/Sadam yet), and other fun.

I love gamers.

But ... isn't that a cello? ... it's got the spike stand at the end which would stab most voilinists in the throat ... which might be entertaining if messy

I seem to have missed all the fun. Sadface.

However, I must admit that it's refreshing to see people just...well, getting over the wank they were involved in. The latest post in the community seems to be very cool headed.

And he's still at it. In a new post. http://www.livejournal.com/community/roleplayers/875795.html

Obviously I think they should be allowed.

Indy press authors need as much support and exposure as they can get. I count myself as moderately successful as a freelancer and self publisher but in my first year I only made about as much as I otherwise would have on the dole.

BTW, does anyone have a code, because it won't let me use my LJ name.

LJ communities are useful tools for having both two-way discussions about material you are producing and for promoting your products. Put baldly this group has a massive amount of subscribers many of whom are potential customers, contributors and playtesters. That is a significant resource for people working to a very tight budget (EG: None).

So from the small indy press side the facility to advertise in such places is desired and needed I would think. This

Sometimes I'm loath to admit I'm a gamer, albeit not an online one.

Oh, my God! It's Grim! We used to hang out on an IC news group, and a bunch of us met up for an RPG weekend once. He wrote a really cool system for running Neverwhere games. I haven't heard from him for years. Wow.

Fandom_wank -- it's like Friends Reunited, in a way.

'Fraid not -- it was a few years ago that I read it. But I found the downloads page at Postmortem Studios. The Neverwhere game is down near the bottom, and it's free to download.

Wait a minute... So it boils down to: "What do you mean by 'we can't advertise for games?'" "We mean: You can't advertise for games."

Hmm.
