The War of the Bumps?
As many Adult Swim fans might know, National Lampoon posted a parody of the AS bumps basically making fun of the AS line-up. People are not amused as the parody isn't that funny and rather uncalled for. Attack of the Show, on the G4 network, calls them on it. Look carefully amongst the comments on this post as a writer from NL (SN is JayPink) responds to the post. And of course, Adult Swim themselves eventually respond on air to the parody. Bump can be seen here.

The entire thing is summarized at Metafilter in which people comment to defend and/or ridicule AS and NL.

The comments aren't particularly wanky, just the situation in general.

I think Adult Swim wins on this one (even if they are annoying hipster douchebags who run shitty shows instead of funny ones not that I'm at all bitter about that, noooo).

Using the word "fag" to insult someone = always a sign of a rapier wit.

Wow, National Lampoon being wanky? That's a time-honoured tradition!

But, um, usually they do it with wit.

And the whole NL thing is kinda weirdly catty...ooh, take that Al Gore's daughter! That'll learn her!

Aw, that kind of makes me sad. I love Jay Pinkerton (well, his website and the stuff he contributes at PointlessWasteofTime.com -- the only things I've read on NL are PWoT poster pieces) but ... yeah wow, that parody seemed kind of heavy on the suck. I got bored and quit watching, though, so maybe I missed some kind of twist ending.

But at least Jay loves Harvey Birdman. I'm gonna go make squealy noises over Stephen Colbert now.

There was a time when we'd have been honored to be in National Lampoon.

The NL parody could have at least put music in the background to make it more interesting and accurate. I sat through the whole thing, hoping it'd be itneresting eventually.

Also, here's one of the comments that made me go, "Oh dear."

I signed the feedback e-mail address up for a bunch of Gay Newsletters... The images I saw to do so will scar me for the rest of the night...

I got bored and stopped watching the NL parody because it wasn't funny, but... I hardly saw it as anything worth getting in a huff over. As in, it didn't seem mean, offensive, or uncalled for to me. I think that AS came out looking a little bit worse in this because they actually responded to the parody with something mean and nasty and huffy. Even if their short little response WAS funnier than everything in the NL parody put together.

That's why I love them sooooo. Because the best response to National Lampoon's half-witted parody is to show them what a funny bump really looks like.

If NL had done a halfway decent job of writing parody bumps, they wouldn't have cursed, because AS doesn't curse. They wouldn't have said anything about "fags." And Al Gore humor was relevant 5 years ago, so they'd have needed to take it to a level higher than "Al Gore's daughter, isn't that funny?" NL was confusing parody with meanness, and forgot that while parody can be mean, it needs an understanding of the subject to work.

Not only that, but AS isn't as hyper as in the NL parody. If you're gonna parody them, you have to be fairly dispassionate.

Hey, NL, you can have these for free:

Tom Goes to the Mayor
Yet another fine show
brought to you by two geeks with a clipart program
and an operating budget of $500,000.

Wasn't Sealab 2021 exciting?
They blew up again at the end!
Sorry to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it.
Oh, wait, Sealab is next.

Seth Green is the producer of Robot Chicken.
Just a reminder that you're only watching it because Buffy ended.
I think that Giles guy is in it as a gay robot.
If not, I'm sure Green's blackmailed someone to come down and bail out that sinking ship.

We used to use old people in pools for our bumps.
Wonder whatever happened to them?
Ever seen Soylent Green?
That's also what happened to the creators of Super Milk-Chan.
Trust us, it's better this way.

Futurama and </i>Family Guy:</i>
The Fox Sloppy Seconds Hour.
Coming soon: the same 3 episodes of American Dad as soon as it gets canceled.

We said, "Nobody's dumb enough
to watch a meatball, shake, and fries fight crime."
Then we saw Space Ghost
And we realized what kind of people are up at 2 a.m.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is next. Not like you have anything better to do.

I didn't know about NL's parody until AS responded in their bump. I didn't even know NL was still around.

After seeing the NL "parody" I don't think AS was wanky at all. They just stated a simple fact. The "parody" was stupid and juvenile. "Tehee, Al Gore's daughter has an unsuccessful career. Teehee, marijuana. Teehee, we called them fags." Let's leave the relevant satire to MAD, m'kay?

(But the fact that his daughter was a writer on the show explains why he was always on as guest voice. I just thought Gore was a big fan. But the episode where he reveals protecting the space-time continuum is one of the VeePee's duties and is in the constitution is priceless.)

-juhachi, who is an unrepentant hipster who drink too much coffee and loves her AS, dammit!

The only funny thing about the NL parody was the Harvey Birdman bit, 'cause... yeah. Pretty accurate. And I actually like Harvey Birdman, but still, yeah.

When did Adult Swim come to be considered "hipster," though? I'm puzzled by this, because I like a lot of the stuff on there and I'm about as far from "hip" as one could possibly get. I absolutely despise Family Guy, though, and I'm mostly just confused by some of the newer stuff like Robot Chicken and Tom Goes to the Mayor, so maybe I can still hold onto my unhipness? I'd hate to think I accidentally picked up some indie cred somewhere.
