U jus jellus, part 2,905,074; yet more fucking HP wank.
The Leaky Cauldron posts a story suggesting that author Jane Yolen doesn't think the Harry Potter books are much cop. Also noted is the apparent similarity of a book of Yolen's to the HP series. This causes even the official summary at TLC to drip with stupid as it suggests that the quote was edited so as not to upset the readers, and then goes on to carefully (in a faintly stalkerish manner) note down proof that Rowling could not possibly have copied ideas from Yolen's 1991 text.

But the comments are where the real meat of the wank lies. As you might expect, there's a lot of "jealousy" accusations, a lot of "never heard of the bitch" and a lot of "I read her book and it was shitty, not like JKR!!!". But there's also "Shakespeare", coming to accuse people of plagiarising him, the suggestion that Rowling's books are some of the most original ever concieved, accusations that Yolen has plagiarised everyone from Ann McCaffrey to Roald Dahl and some voices of relative sanity suggesting that the author of three hundred published books mightn't feel the need to necessarily be jealous of someone who's had sucess.

For the record, I think it's reasonably likely she was joking about wanting a cut of Rowling's money. After all, who wouldn't?

I read Wizard's Hall when I was a kid and loved it, and I noticed the similarities between it and the Harry Potter series immediately when I first read Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that Rowling read Wizard's Hall and got some of the story-shape into her head. But they're definitely different stories (there is no quilting in Harry Potter), and they both owe more to the genre at large of "magical boy-hero saves the world with his friends and learns the value of love and friendship while having wacky magical adventures" than they do to each other.

Personally? I feel like Yolen herself was being wanky here.

Honestly, when I saw that earlier today, I got flashbacks of the whole Nancy Stouffer incident. The difference here is that Jane Yolen is an enormously well-known YA writer and editor, and Nancy is chopped liver. I don't think JKR plagerized Jane Yolen. There are lots of books that use that same basic plot. I do think that some of the things Jane Yolen said were in bad taste, like wanting a cut on the royalties of Harry Potter.

I almost feel bad for the Leaky Cauldron. They're a great website and they work really hard, but they've been the eye of the Great Tornado of Wankdom for the past month, and it's not likely to stop anytime soon.

The quote wasn't edited to avoid upsetting readers, it was Melissa's original comment that was edited. Something very snarky and pettier than Yolen, along the lines of "Yeah, and there have been no red heads in books before. Or schools for wizards. It's a mad world!" I and a few others pointed out that she sunk pretty low with that. I considered posting this to i_wank because of my original comment on there (I'm Angela on there), and then another one, posted shortly after Melissa's first response that said I found it tasteless and unfitting of a "professional" news site, and that I wouldn't be returning to Leaky. All the good news shows up on LJ (or F_W!) a few days later, and then I *expect* editoriliazing. That one got deleted, lol.

I'm a huge, ginormous fan of Yolen, especially her dragon books. Also, I've been trying to come up with a coherent comment for the past ten minutes. It's not working. Flubbgubber.
So I'm just going to get to the meat of it:
Firstly, I'm fairly certain Yolen was joking.
And secondly, puh-lease. Everyone knows that Rowling ripped off Niel Gaimen! If the seventh book has even one reference to Life during Wartime I'm going to die of glee.

Yes, Yolen's being wanky (not as wanky as Melissa, but, hey).

You can't copyright ideas, so the similarity doesn't condemn Rowling.

But the comment about inferior writing and too many adverbs? Yolen's right on the nose.

it must be really depressing to basically be one of the forerunners of children's literature until suddenly some unknown British author busts out into the scene and basically reconfigures the fantasy genre

This, however... the gods wept.

OMG!!11!!! Rowling's a genius! You may have written a wizarding school, but Rowling did it better! And with more adverbs!

*sigh*

I did a fourth-grade book report on Wizard's Hall. It's a good book, and I'd say the writing is better overall, but it's a short novel and the plot moves very quickly without allowing for a whole lot of subplot or details, so a real comparison is unfair. (I'm a big fan of Yolen, for different reasons than I'm a fan of Rowling.)

Yes, of course, she must be plagiarising, because the idea of a dorky pseudo-hero with glasses and a rednut freckled sidekick is The Most Original Idea In the History of Literature. As is the idea of a geeky-haired bookworm with big teeth. Nobody's ever done that before. And a sneering Aryan rich kid. And Gandalf Obi-Wan the wizened old mentor who cacks it. Rowling is a jeenius. She couldn't have possibly written anything that was *gasp* unoriginal! Never!

Yes, and the same goes for Yolen.

A lot of stories will have similar ideas at first, but I don't see it as ripping off... the orphaned/unfortunate boy/girl becomes a wizard/princess/super-hero/whatever thing has been done by so many different types of writers that it's stupid to just point to ever one who looks similar. I especially don't get the Books of Magic one. I mean, yes it's a similar set-up, but Books of Magic is SO diferent from Harry Potter once you get past the physical description and the wizard thing that once you actually have read a bit of both, it's hard to see them as similar at all.

Neil Gaiman sums it up nicely: Look, all of the things that they actually have in common are such incredibly obvious, surface things that, had she actually been stealing, they were the things that would be first to be changed. Change hair color from brown to fair, you lose the glasses, you know: that kind of thing.

I'm getting sick of authors saying that JKR ripped them off when what they are claiming got ripped off isn't 100% original, either... stop trying to cash in on someone else's success. Is it deserved? Who cares!! *headdesk*

Eeek! Jane Yolen wank! I <3 Jane Yolen. With the sheer number of books that she has, there are hits and there are misses. Wizard's Hall isn't Shakespeare, but it's a great read on a rainy afternoon. It's a lot more superficial than the Harry Potter stories, but it's a fun tale.

For those that are interested, The Wild Hunt owns my soul, and I have read Armageddon Summer several times. The Devil's Arithmetic was absolutely superb. I loved the Pit Dragon Trilogy, and I have enjoyed numerous short stories by her.

You know, I got the the feeling that Yolen was being facetious, as well. (Especially if numerous people have made the mistake of thinking that Yolen copied Rowling.)

I don't think any of these people, on either side, realise that there are only so many fantasy hero arcs possible. Every fantasy I've ever read has had some similarity to another -- or SEVERAL others. It's just... how fantasy is. How any genre is.

See, I could never buy these comparisons, since Henry is *obviously* a Malfoy, not a Potter ...

I am looking forward to the day these guys find out about that old book series-turned-movie from 1986, "The Worst Witch."

You got your british wizard school/castle (for girls), silly names (Mrs. Hardbroom, Mrs. Cackle, etc...), an EVIL WITCH THAT WANTS TO TAKE OVER TEH SCHOOL, a total bitch of a Potions mistress. Oh and a girl version of Malfoy with her wicked henchmen.

I can only assume Voldemort is ripped off of Tim Curry's character, the Grand Wizard. All the Klan imagery is just waiting to be extrapolated and mocked.

I haven't read Jane Yolen since 2nd grade. What are her books about again? I remember something about owls and moons and....things. *is mystified*

I remember reading Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone and thinking that it reminded me quite a bit of Jane Yolen's Wizard's Hall... but in ways that were likely due to the subgenre of stories set in magic schools. Chamber of Secrets didn't remind me of Yolen's work at all, so I stopped thinking much of it.

Yeah, Yolen might be joking about the money, but she is consistently bitchy and grumpy about JK on the children's literature listserv I follow. As much as "Ur soo jeelus!!" is annoying and generally false fangirling, the woman seems to take an avid interest in shooting down all that is Rowling, especially considering that Yolen hasn't done so poorly in the books-to-cash race herself. The green does show through a might.

So, we've had the last two Worldcon GoH; can we expect Connie Willis to be the next to point out that Rowling's writing is really not the sun and stars of kidlit? Because I'm going to bust out the extra-large tub-o-popcorn for that.

And then drag Harlan Ellison out for another GoHship. Because if the fans think that mild little 'you know, she actually didn't invent the wizard-at-boarding-school story' remarks and jokes about being the richest woman in England are insulting, I'd love hate to see what he'd stir up.

She missed the point of what Pratchett said re: the Time article, but addresses what she meant to say here on her journal.

Now, if the media would just stop misquoting all the fantasy authors, maybe fandom_wank could sleep at night... ;)

So many books have been written that it becomes hard to be 200% original in writing a story. Furthermore there was a book called groosham grange by Anthony Horowitz about an highschool in England on a remote location for future witches and wizards who were taught by werewolves, ghosts and what not more And that was published around 1988 already.
