Small, Developing Spuffy/Slash/Veronica Mars Wankage
Not sure how to introduce this one, really... but it seems destined to arrive here eventually, and I'm impatient.

[info]kantayra asks, Was Fandom Emotionally Traumatized by S6 Spuffy? More importantly, did said trauma turn Spuffy shippers to slash? Can Veronica/Logan fans ever recover and move on to this new ship?

Inquiring minds want to know.

[info]sisabet's response has been the favorite rebuttal so far.

OMGZ FIRST SECOND COMMENT LOLZ!!!!111three!

Uh. I know it says something about Veronica Mars fandom that all our biggest wanks are not, in fact, about Veronica Mars, but exactly what that is escapes me currently. I have a feeling that I should be grateful for this, though, 'cause I have a strong suspicion that the conclusion would result in me exploding in rage at everybody in fandom for, like, the fourth time today, which couldn't be good for my blood pressure.

So I'm gonna go post Kristen Bell picspam in my LJ instead.

The S6 writers had, unintentionally, destroyed the sexual identities of a vast portion of the straight female viewers.

Bwah?

I had no idea that BtVS writers had such power that they could actually destroy someone's identity via their show.

Heck all I lost by watching S6 and 7 of Buffy was love for the series.

The writers were so desperate to prove their point that they were willing to crush women's chosen sexuality to do so.

IDENTITY SMASH!

P.S.: WTF rape. I stopped keeping up with Buffy before the dreaded Season Six came out, so I was a bit lost when the OP mentioned it. Would any fans care to fill me in?

I don't think the OP is being wanky herself (and she has some fair points about the plot of S6 being emotionally harsh for viewers as well as the characters, affecting the way we now interact with other entertainment), but I think she's way off on the explanation for the slash 'exodus' from Spuffy. I'm sure negative feelings about the canon soured some people on the pairing, or made it easier to ship Spike with anyone but Buffy, but I don't buy that the path was "I like Spike, I am ostracised for that, I therefore identify with gay people, thus slash is good."

And I think she missed that people who'd always been slashers would extrapolate from "Spuffy fans went to slash because of trauma" to "therefore most slash fans must have some sort of trauma that caused them to like The Gay Sex." It's not what she meant, but she left herself open for people to infer it.

I like Cereta's response -- not so much the part where she reminds Kantayra that slash existed before Spuffy, because I think K knows that, but the part where she pegs the 'trauma'/slash connection as being pretty clearly based around the fact that the OP doesn't get slash. "I don't understand why so many people like it, therefore there must be an external reason why a bunch of people who used to like the thing I like, now like something else that I... don't get." Well, yeah, but maybe that external reason is that a few writers they respected got interested in slash, and and that caused a lot more people to realize it wasn't weird and icky and give it a try and realize they liked it.

Oh, I'm going to hell for jumping into this mess. Whee!

First, the OP states that she knows men who do not find lesbian sex hot. I would like to meet these men. Also if she could bring some unicorns to this meeting, that would be awesome too.

Second, I don't for a second believe that Joss was trying to tell women who liked attempted rapists in leather jackets not to date said guys. In fact, I often got just the opposite impression, that the men who attempt to rape you do so because they love you, really love you, and deserve your forgiveness because they're the only ones who really understand you, deep down in your soul. Which is just so very, very General Hospital.

Oh, and the whole "but I like bad boys!" response? So fucking stupid. There's a huge chasm between liking a guy who rides a motorcycle and liking a guy who attempts to rape you, and if you have the social intelligence of a bag of fritos you can tell the difference. Period. Don't date people who are mean to you. There's a message.

And what explains the popularity of Mulder/Skinner from around season three of the X-Files on? Did Mulder try to rape Scully in an episode I missed?

You see, Spuffy fans turned to slash after season 6 and then they built a TIME MACHINE and went back to the 1970's to kickstart Kirk/Spock. But, you see, the time machine hasn't been built YET, so THERE'S STILL TIME TO STOP THEM!!

This just backs up my current theory that Veronica Mars has inherited a set of fans who are already at Season Seven levels of crazy. Poor show, it should have another year at least before people cross the line from Obsessed into Batshit Insane.

I was a Buffy fan. Spike was and remains my favourite character, though the reasons for that sort of swap around depending on which season I'm watching. Logan? Is not Spike. He's just another interesting character. Who happens to be damned good to look at.

Oh! Breaking news! Well, not really, but I just realized that the OP is also responsible for what I think most VM fans can agree is the Raddest Post of All Time: The Great Echolls' Alpaca Quest. The whole Spuffy Causes Slash thing is more than a little...uhm...let's not say words...but in light of the alpaca post, I'm willing to believe Kantayra was just having an moment of ill-advised meta madness. Oh fabulous.

A brand new species of the old "A bad relationship must have turned her GAY!", except this time it's "Trauma over canon made her a slasher!" as all the poor, once-normal het readers/writers were converted by those ebil slashers who kept pushing the nasty ol' mansex writings on them and corrupting their innocent minds.

Bitch, please. Some of us are born liking slash the best, some of us realize later in fanfic life we like it better than het and some of are bi-fanfictual. None of us were brainwashed into it.
