arteests can be wanky too!
n00b here. Been lurking for quite sometime, and was finally persuaded to join--if, for, nothing else, to post this particular tidbit. Sadly, it didn't get flamewar-y before it was locked, but watch Jeebus boggle at the ability of the human mind to completely miss the point.

DeviantArt is the ff.net of the artist world. It's a breeding ground for morons, sychophants, and elite-only-in-your-heads.

Daily Top Favorites [DTF] are essentially the top six or so pictures listed at DA that have been '+fav'd' in a twenty-four hour span by members of the community, aka 'deviants.' +faving is like bookmarking the picture, adding it to your favorites folder. Lots of varied art makes it into the DTF, which are show-cased on the front page all day--from the good to the mediocre. Big deal, right? It's what the community enjoys. I've even seen a blue happy-face with the words, 'please stop drawing nightcrawler' make it once. They differ from 'Daily Deviations' [DD] in that DDs are chosen by the admins of the site, and are usually of the artsy-smartsy sort. DDs have a 'special' protection that keeps people from complaining about the DDs being chosen, cause the admins pick them without notice from the artist.

Apparently though, some people highly resent the artwork that gets into the DTF (even if it's not the artists' fault), and get pretty insulting about it. So Pink makes a petition at the suggestion board, asking for an option to allow some of one's artwork to be excluded from DTFs, among other things.

Wank of the Elitist Kind ensues.

Nuggets of joy include insulting the type of art one enjoys, the 'if you can't take the heat get out' response, the admin-holier-than-thou getting... well, holier-than-thou, and my personal favorite, the 'OMGWTFBBQ' U ONLY HAVE 2 POSTS I HVE 1000000 WHA U KNO?!?!111

But, if nothing else, watch nearly all those involved completely miss the point as their blinders kick on.

YES! I convinced yet another to join in the hive vagina fun! *flexes*

Anyway, I'm STILL going through the damn thing. Long as hell, but darn amusing. XD

I think the wankier part was when they started hurling insults about the kind of art that people enjoy. Art is art and crap is crap, no matter what style it's drawn in.

Oh, and no matter what form the obiligatory "My penis post count is greater than YOURS!" wank takes, it is always wonderful.

You're right, it's exactly like ff.net.

Like fanfiction, if you're somehow popular (although you didn't ask for it) and received tons of reviews, some trolls will definitely leave negative comment sooner or later. Deal with them with some sort of dignity and a smile, please. If you can't deal with them, do not post online. Simple as that.

I'm only half way through the thread, but I see some people suggest that anime is a lesser art form than the "serious" artists out there.

Please allow me to laugh my ass off.

Bawahahahahaha!

LOL, I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one that thought the implication was there! My favorite was the indirect comparison here:
Pavaroti > #1 pop billboard song = Artsy-wartsy > anime art

<---is spamming? will shut up

Not spamming at all. Hell, you should see how much I reply at times. XD

Anyway, I'm still amused by that comparison, because like I told you in chat, ANYONE who has ever heard the word "opera" once has heard of Pavarotti, since he's one of the Three Tenors. People who don't give a flying fuck about the genre know his name (Hell, people remember it better than your average Billboard pop #1. His fame's got a much more enduring nature.). Hence, he is not "indy" enough, you silly people!

Everybody's just gotta convince themselves that they're ohsospecial, don't they? Yeesh.

Although, I do have a friend with a gallery on Epilogue who's lately been getting complaints in her gallery that her recent submissions haven't been in anime style. omgwtf god forbid an artist draw in whatever style she wants, be it anime or other.

::snrks:: Which is a point that any creative person has to deal with. I've been DTF'd a few times myself, and my favorites are always the 'omg this iz gay but u draw gooder' comments.

But I think the point that was trying to be made by Pink wasn't about the flames being done (as trolls are as trolls are), so much as there should be an option to be 'opted out' from being a DTF. Or at least, the same treatment that the DDs have (which also used to get flamed excessively until the Law was put into place) should be applied to the DTFs, since they're the same thing, with the exception that one is chosen by the community and the other by the admins.

While the right to refuse the suggestion is left to the admins, I'm just simply amazed by how many people missed that point on that thread. ::snrks::

Man, I miss the ff.net forums. The flamewars in the Megaman forum kept my toes toasty.

Being a complete attention whore myself, I can't understand why some people do NOT want their arts to be featured as DTF, but that's beside the point. ^_~

Pink has a good point and has a somewhat valid way to go about doing it (ummm online petition? Shouldn't she try to e-mail the admin of Deviantart first?), but the people's comments are WAY off topics.

*reads entry about post count = seniority and authority, laughs*

Err ... ever heard of lurking, dude? Or spamming the boards with useless messages?

::snrk:: A lot of people would kill for DTFs. I found out about it myself when two of my pieces were DTFs at the same time on my second day there, and apparently that garnered me a lot of admiration or something, cause everyone kept commenting on it, even while lamenting. (Me = clueless at that point in time. o.O but I found out that pr0n sells at DA if you want to be a DTF ^^;) However, DTFs really aren't a measure of skill at all--just popularity.

I think the DTFs stabs actually go a little deeper than what we're seeing. Anime art tend to be DTFs, as they make up a good percentage of the DA population, and a lot of the 'elite circles' tend to be part of the DA membership. When their art constantly makes it up at DTFs, I think a lot of resentment from various people starts puttering around. What these people don't realize is that it's not the artists' fault, but the fans who auto-fav everything that these artists come out with. So I assume there's some artists out there that just do not want the hassle of the whole 'DTF = instant flaming no matter what the content is'...

In the end, it's just pretty much abuse of the system. o.o; It pushes DA into being a popularity contest, so you get a lot of whores running around. I had someone IM me when one of my pictures was DTF and so was his--he said, and I quote, 'if you fave mine, I'll fave yours.' It was almost disgusting. Shouldn't you fave because you like a picture?

ummm online petition? Shouldn't she try to e-mail the admin of Deviantart first?

That's what I thought. x.x Online petitions /= getting the job done.

...of the FFN forums. (I was there in time to see the Cassandra Claire explosion, orchestrate a plugger hunt, and watch both the forums and the Yahoo! mailing list implode.)

Those were the days.

And imagine the wank if they were still around.

The site design of Deviantart alone is enough to make me insane. I'm sure people with faster connections don't have this problem, but my pathetic little dialup chokes and dies over All. The Stupid. Icons.

That, and I keep reading "Deviantart" as "Devian Tart."

Damn, for real. Also in general, DA's design is too busy for my tiny brain. It seems like much of the links and options are pretty well useless anyway n_n And I read it is as Devian Tart sometimes too X3;;

I used to respect DeviantArt.

Then I got my head out of my ass and found places like Absolute Cross, Spoono, and Ascenvia.

But even when I had respect for the joint, I thought that it was FUGLY. (I mean, three shades of army green that close to one another? For the ENTIRE SITE? What the fuck?)

*sigh* But it's not nearly as bad as FFN is (or the entire situation surrounding the rise of FDN was).
