Current mood: cynical

They'll never let us down!
The very talented and brilliant people over at HermionePotter have really taken off the gloves now. They don't hold a grudge at all, honest.

Summary: HBP was an utterly contrived, unbelievable piece of bullshit pulled straight out of Rowling's snidely snickering ass.

Some part of me wishes Jo Rowling read some of this stuff, I really do, and actually retaliated. But she has, oh I don't know, a LIFE? Yes, moving on.

There is of course, with all H/Hr wank, the mention of Sue-Ginny:

The Insertion of a Full-Blown Mary Sue: Ginny Weasley

JKR wrote a Mary Sue, and the Mary Sue's name is Ginevra Weasley.

No question about it anymore.

Brief Explanation: A Mary Sue is a self-insertion, the manifestation of an author's wishful thinking, and the mark of an amateur, immature writer. The culprit author writes herself into the story as this Mary Sue, someone perfect (I dare you to find a real character flaw in Ginny), distinct (Ginny is the only girl, the seventh child, in her family, and she even has a queenly name), and loved by all (Ron, Hermione, Harry, everyone in Hogwarts). She distinguishes herself by being annoyingly perfect and generally superfluous to the storyline, while inexplicably becoming the hero's love interest. She is fiercely defended by her creator, and either immensely loved or immensely loathed by readers.

This describes Ginny exactly. My hat goes off to the prophetic Ana Christina for noticing and writing about it, because at least we had fair warning. To think I was going to debate against Ana in defense of JKR's writing ability.

Right.

And seriously, why all the Jane Austen references? Please let the woman rest in peace. God knows she wouldn't want her good name thrown into the mess that is Harmonian wank.

Well, there's an image that'll haunt me.

Hm, I taste sour grapes.

I could have supported Remus/Tonks if it were written better and wasn't just JKR blatantly saying, "Up yours!" to all the slashers in the fandom.

Say what?

(I dare you to find a real character flaw in Ginny)

Challenge accepted, wanky one. How about that she's quick to temper? Or that she can be pretty tactless (see her remark to Hermione about Quidditch and Ron about snogging) to the point of being slightly mean? None of these matter then, I suppose.

The site is going be appearing on here for quite some time.

Erm. I'm sorry. But hasn't JKR repeatedly said that Hermione is her self-insert???

I'm not up with all the author-interviews, but I vaguely remember this being a Big Thing in the fandom.

And here I thought Hermione was the Mary Sue, what with JK saying 'Hermione is exactly how I was when I was younger' and 'Hermione's patronus is an otter because they're my favorite animal' and 'oh, I put so much of myself into Hermione!'.

Funny how that works.

Because they're posturing pseudo-intellectuals, that's why.
[info]julian_black

And seriously, why all the Jane Austen references?

JKR mentioned in a past interview that Jane Austen is one of her favorite authors. From this snippet of information, some Harmonians have deduced that JKR is not only trying to write Great Literature, but that Austen is an influence on the plot of HP.

Never mind that Austen herself never wrote with the idea of being a literary icon. Never mind that HP is a coming-of-age adventure story, not a comedy of manners or a romance. In the Harmonian view, JKR must be trying to write something bigger and more meaningful than the story of a teenage wizard's quest to discover his own power and destroy the villain.

If the Harmonians weren't so blinded by their own obsessions--and perhaps if they were as well-read as they claim to be--they would have noticed that the HP books owe their biggest English-Lit. debt to Dickens, not Austen. Did none of them ever have to read Great Expectations in high school? Honestly, it makes me want to knock each of them over the head in turn with a Norton Anthology.

They have so fooled themselves into believing that romance is at the heart of the books that they fail to see the real origins of Harry Potter's story. None of them seem to have read Joseph Campbell--I never see discussions of how Harry, Ron, and Hermione's roles fit into the archetypal hero's journey.

I've seen twaddle about how Hermione is Harry's anima, or soror mystica, but never about how she is simply there as one of the hero's companions, helping him reach his destination and carry out the task he is meant to do. That's a hell of a long way from Jane Austen...

And seriously, why all the Jane Austen references?

I'm guessing because many Harmonians just can't understand that HP is NOT a *love story*. It's not a rewrite of 'Emma' with the main characters named changed to Harry and Hermione.

A Mary Sue is a self-insertion, the manifestation of an author's wishful thinking

Um, Hermione is JKR's self-insert, not Ginny. What do they make of that?

I'm so sick of the H/Hr's melodramatic flailing. I already decided a long time ago that everyone who has anything to do with hermionepotter.net is fucking mental.

If they hate the book so much, why don't they just shut up talking about it already? Jesus. Get over it.. H/Hr is dead, gone, and not coming back.

No one else CARES. God, this icon has never been more appropriate.

How pretty Ginny's hair was.

Wait, isn't this the same girl who wrote the H/Hr HBP in which Hermione's hair was perfect--in which Hermione, instead of falling off the bed, leaps lightly to her feet? The Hermione who is loved by everyone who matters, and can do no wrong even in Harry's point of view?

The Harmonians just never imagined Rowling would write a Mary Sue out of any character apart from the one they saw as their own self-insert.

Was there this much wailing and gnashing of teeth over Sirius' death-by-curtain? Or the fact that Sirius, James et al were beastly to poor Severus at school? Actually, as regards that last one, I know there was plenty of wailing about that, and that it did eventually shrink into something more manageable. Time heals all wanks, I suppose. This one'll ebb away gradually, and book seven will give them something new entirely. Then that'll go and they'll probably get into something else in about 2011, like Vallium or psychiatric care.

Although I agree that Ginny did get a bit Mary-Sue at times in HBP. But Hermione's been fairly Mary-Sue at points, too (wasn't she such a pretty princess at the Yule Ball?). Come to think of it, so's Harry. And as for Dumbledore, well...

Fact is that it doubtless takes a huge amount of effort to avoid inserting one's own self into certain or all characters. Plus, there is a point at which one has to abandon complete realism and likelihood in stories such as this, simply to ensure that the story progresses. If everything that happened to Harry was the most likely thing under the circumstances, he'd have died before we got far enough to complain that Ginny wasn't right for him. The trick is to not overuse this stuff.

Anyway, we all know perfectly well that if Hermione was Harry's designated love interest, she wouldn't be any less lovely than Ginny. Indeed, her hair would doubtless be described in glowing terms and her skills at research would be shining off the page.

(I still think Luna would be quite good for Harry, simply because she doesn't appear to hero-worship him. But that's probably because she's not interested, I suppose. I never claimed to be an expert in these things)

To J.K. Rowling from a disgruntled and obsessive fangirl with zero sense of perspective;

Still, I wish you luck on your future endeavors, but I hope you learn something from this waste of paper you call HBP.

Is it wrong of me to find this tragic, yet completely hilarious?

Someone remind me - how many copies has this 'waste of paper' shifted already, Mary Sue issues, shipper wars or no?

This whole essay is pure crap. Didn't this site have a poll along the lines of, "Should JKR give an interview to the H/Hr shippers?" I'd actually like to see that now. It'd be amusing to see these rabid Harmonians try to convince JKR of the One Twu Luv. It's truly amazing how ten-year-olds have better reading comprehension skills than these adults.

Forget love, trust, respect, understanding, and unwavering friendship. Forget character development. Forget choosing what's right over what's Weasley. Forget Hermione. Hermione who?

Weasley does not equal "love, trust, respect, understanding, and unwavering friendship"?
Harmonians: "Ron who?"
She was probably thinking of Ginny when she wrote that, but I'm tired of these shippers trying to downplay Ron's importance as if Hermione's the only true friend Harry's ever had. (And a fight in fourth year is not proof of BETRAYAL OMG!!!)

Harry, in this novel, is an idiot and an a s s hole.

Huh? The other stuff in the essay was the usually Harmoany wank, but I haven't seen this claim anywhere else. Every fan I've talked to, and my self, all think Harry was wonderful in this book. He helped Ron with his quidditch troubles without using a spell or a potion, because in the end, he knew Ron, he knew that Ron needed to do it himself if he was going to gain any confidence. He was also very sweet with Hermione when she was upset about a hurtful imitation Ron did. He also refused to be the Ministry's monkey when they were doing things he didn't condone. And for once, the boy was right about a lot of things in this book.

So Harry wasn't perfect in this book, but I would say he was far from an idiot and an a s s hole. The OP's main argument for this is that "He didn't listen to Hermione about the HBP's potions book".

Good lord they're persistant aren't they? While I do think Ginny was sueish in this text, I'm not so obsessed with my own personal slashy characters as to get too upset with what has hapened in the novel. When something happens that I'm not fond of I immerse myself in fan fiction and that's that. I don't forgo all love I have the work itself because one aspect didn't end up how I liked it.

2005-08-21 01:37 am UTC (link)
Alright gang, I think we ALL see it coming.

First, Harry is off to save his one true love, Draco from the EBIL Dark Lord. Ron and Hermione tag along. Harry dies killing the Dark Lord, Ron then dies because I don't see him being ABLE to get along without Harry. Hermione then goes back to the Wizzarding world, breaks the news to Ron's family, and consoles Ginny. Then Ginny and Hermione run off together.

Luna can go too.

My favorite claim is that Draco came "near-redemption" in this book and that's like, so bad.

I mean, how dare that racist shit have a *gasp* personality--and depth--and ummm....more to his character than a sheet of paper? Why the hell did that Rowling-slut spend time trying to develop underdeveloped characters when she could've been writing about Hermione's shiny hair?
