When Harmonians Become Teachers
Thanks to an anonymous who tipped me off on this small wank.

Over on Portkey, there's a thread about non-fandom involved people who ship H/Hr. People post about friends, siblings, parents etc. The stuff about people who've seen the movies and ship H/Hr is a little funny, but the highlight...

The Obsidian Warlock posts about his/her students. I pity the poor things.

I had a reasonable number of interested students in my Grade 12 English class (covering for a term), and we managed to get into the shipping debates of Harry Potter. I issued a challenge to the class to champion several romantic pairings, and to defend it with every literary reference or any other pertinent resource, cited properly, and the champion ship would be the one whose essays were the most convincing. Most of the class didn't have a real concern over Harry Potter books, so I was assured dutiful school work; I would then mark these papers like I would their final, so that they all got a taste of end-of-year expectations, and were all marked on the same scale, with minimum requirements set for research purposes (including citation from all 5 books). Class presentation and defense of your paper was mandatory.

I had 6 papers for H/Hr, 5 for H/G and 6 for R/Hr.

5 of the 6 H/Hr papers were the only A's I handed out. They're also the reason why I ship H/Hr, having been a "casual reader" until that point.

And here we thought it was R/Hr undermining the American education system.

If I had a teacher like that, I'd be pulling every string in the world to get her ass fired.

Please get out of the teaching business and do something more apropriate to your skill level, like becoming a reporter for "A Current Affair" or being Anna Nicole Smith's personal assistant.

Laugh or cry ... Cry or laugh? I think I'll just settle for hysterical sobbing. If I found out my kid was going to English class, getting into shipping debates and writing papers about Harry Potter shipping because his teacher is a nutburger, I'd have to find some way to get her ass fired. Like, our educational system is so wonderful we can afford to hire batshit teachers ...

Er, hang on - did she make her entire class, including the students who couldn't give two shits about HP, write those papers? Referencing five books? 'Cause even if it wasn't for an actual grade, dude. That's pretty effed up right there.

Now there were plenty of Potter fans in my AP Lit class my senior year, and we'd often joke around with the teacher about letting us use the books on our exams or whatever. But she'd always laugh it off because of the whole, y'know, common sense thing that she's got goin' on.

Though, if I had to choose between a HP essay and a Crime and Punishment essay, well...

The idiocy! It BURNS, precious!

My sister (also a teacher) asked for papers on shipping in Harry Potter in her primary school class. She got a variety of responses and marked them according to which children were thinking and reasoning through the reasons for why they saw the pairing they chose - not which pairings she agreed with.

I ... I ... that is so many flavors of wrong, I just don't know where to begin. I'm guessing this "teacher" thought that s/he was supporting the notion that H/Hr shippers are smarter than thou, but instead s/he just supported the well-studied notion that prejudice (of all types) plays into how students are graded.

The teachers in my family would be beside themselves with rage over this.

Ah, yes, a sample size of 17. Truly a marvelously revealing piece of research with a ginormous sample size like that. And I'll try to assume that the teacher had no biases or anything. And that the citations were relevant. And . . .

Oh, forget it. Another "Harmonians are smarter" argument I dread we'll hear again and again.

I know I've said this will go on for awhile based on my estimates, but even I'm getting tired of TEH STUPID.

5/6 of the H/Hr papers were A's handed out.

But this was based on the first 5 books.

So, really all these supposedly smart students got it wrong.

And those five students were probably all really too-smart-for-your-own-good girls who have never even held hands with a boy and who want to identify with Hermione because she is not only smart, but also cool and thus they see her as their self-insertion. They wnat to be her. And since they want an at least medium smart boyfriend, they choose Harry/Hermione and since they are smart and have no friends they actually have the time to find convincing quotes from the books, while the cool kids go out and party/have sex.

Or something like that.

And yes, I tend to like H/Hr. As a ship, not as a part of fandom.

I cannot help but think that Rowling was pressured in that interview to skew to one side. I almost believe that she wants us to think R/Hr and H/G very strongly before book 7. She seemed very excited to have us do that, and she's misdirected us in her interviews before. I wonder if she felt that it was the only way to shut down that line of questioning. She's not done playing with us yet; she gave us a blunt romance plot to go with her main plot, which has at least 7-8 levels of deception involved. If this romance plot is given as truth, then it's over, and book 7 will have next to nothing. If it's deeper, then we'll see complications next book. Harry has proven that he's an adult now, and that means that a complicated relationship setup is a reasonable challenge for him next book.

Ok, who put JKR up to it?

what the fuck.

So, if you ship R/Hr & H/G, you don't deserve an A?

Ugh, severe flashback to my 12th grade year when my English teacher assigned us an essay on 'Buffy: The Vampire Slayer' where we had to identify the mythological aspects of the show and compare Buffy and Faith to 'fallen heroine' archetypes like Yseult and Guinevere. Good times. ><;

Glad to know the future badfic writers of America are receiving an education that will prepare them for the shipping wars that comprise such a -huge- portion of adult life ._.b

That almost makes me want to Time-Turner my way back to high school so I can be in her class and write my paper on Snape/Lupin. Or Squid/Aragog. Or Sirius/Buckbeak. Or Weasleycest.

If I had a kid in her class, I'd be working overtime to get her incompetent ass fired--and yes, she's incompetent. She made her students write about romantic pairings in a series of books that are not about romance, so the assignment is irrelevant to the materials at hand.

Teaching Harry Potter at a lower grade level isn't such a bad idea; there are all kinds of themes that can be explored. But in a 12th grade class? Um, no. She should have taught three or four more challenging books. As a Harmonian, she must be well-read enough to know of other, more suitable books, right? Surely, she could at least have taught Emma?

I assume she assigned this paper during the last school year, before HBP came out. That makes me wonder what the kids who got it right and wrote about R/Hr or H/G--and got lower grades for it--are thinking now. Granted, they've graduated and it isn't really going to affect them, but I'd be seriously pissed off at having such an idiot for a teacher.

[sighs] Harmonian arrogance seems to know no bounds...

As a teacher, and one who has used several non-traditional approaches to teaching material, the fall of the Roman Republic using Star Wars episode 3 much?, I am still appalled at this.

Using a shipping essay is fine, it may actually be a way to motivate some students, but to confine it to only HP, especially when most of the class showed little interest in the series? It should have been open choice, or from a larger selection of series/books. I'm sure the 5 H/Hr essays that got As were by the 5 people who actually psychoticharmonianscared about the books to begin with.

And we won't even start on bias in all of this. I wonder how the teacher would have taken MY ship essay on the merits of Snape and Sirius fucking each other stupid. Contextual hate leads to subtextual UST after all, or the implications presented from Harry's first person POV in HBP and the rhapsodizing on how attractive Tom Riddle was that was present in the text...
