Woe unto the Scribes and the Hypocrites: Fic Critique Wank
Thanks to the mouse on [info]wank_report. ETA. Have found some more information since posting. Have changed report to include this.

[info]rageprufrock writes fanfic. I knew her slightly in HP fandom. In fact, we belonged to a certain community... but I'm getting ahead of myself here.

Anyway, she wrote a fic called Hindsight in the SGA fandom, and [info]the_moonmoth "analyzed" her fanfic, in a post on a community called 'The Cutting Board' which is devoted to critical analysis of SGA fics.

This made [info]rageprufrock feel hurt.

A *lot* of her friends then post about how evil it is to say critical things about other people's fanfic.

But it's revealed that [info]rageprufrock belongs to the community, Badficsupport, which is devoted to mocking badfics. I belong myself, but hadn't looked at it for a long, long time. So nice to see it featuring in a wank.

Meanwhile, back at 'The Cutting Board', there's a response.

NM

ETA 2. [info]rageprufrock has unsubbed from Badficsupport.

So let's peel back that veneer for a minute and say that when I log onto this community and find my work stripped apart like a Ripper-victim, with both elegant admiration and vicious discontent, I'm allowed a moment of shocked numbness. I am, in fact, allowed to feel shitty and insulted and hurt, because those are a spectrum of human emotions felt even by the great Romantic poets who got ripped by T.S. Eliot in the true glory days of literary criticism, though I'd feel a lot better about Eliot saying my work is one-dimensional than somebody knocking my beta reader.

"Please bear in mind that I haven't written a critical literary analysis in many years, and I was never much good at it then."

I'm sorry but the words 'critical literal analysis' and 'fanfic' in the same post is just laughable.

The rest was just too long. And probably boring.

So really, dear Stargate fandom, I like your show, some of your fanfic is quite nice, but some of your fans are just really pretentious and weird. Fanfic shouldn't be analysed as if it were some great work of literature.

Still, it makes a bit more sense that the essay on whether or not MacKenzie was TEH EBIL or TEH MORON for diagnosing Daniel as schizophrenic, when the symptoms didn't match schizophrenia. Apparently, in the fan world there is no such thing as lazy writers.

I've never read this fic, or any of this author's SGA writing. I used to read her X-files, I think, but the thing that's weird to me is that I read the review/critic whatever and it doesn't sound like it ripped the piece to shreds. It seemed like the reviewer liked it and agreed with the characterization for the most part.

Why did she get so upset over that? Or was it just the comments posted after that bothered her?

The SGA fandom scares me (even though I love it), because it doesn't have wank so much as meta. People are so...polite most of the time. They write essays and debate things! There's rarely namecalling at all!

So it's nice to see some wank from it. Even if it's rather mild wank.

I had to read Rageprufrock's post a few times before I understood what she was saying. My sense is half the people who came to her defense misread what she originally said. My impression was she was just waxing poetic on the experience of critical analysis. But then a bunch of people read this as "TheCuttingBoard ripped my fic to shreds and I'm so upset I might leave the Internet and take my fic with me!"

While Rageprufrock decided to stay out of it, her non-presence meant there was no inhibiting of the They-Wronged-My-Homie factor. Then the original misunderstanding multiplied as people responded to the accusations of the the Rageprufrock defense.

The question that comes to my mind: is she remotely disturbed that this happened, or is she sitting back with a bowl of popcorn and watching the wanky fun?

Oh, sigh. I do get where rageprufrock's coming from when she dissects her emotional responses to her fanfic getting lit-critted, but, you know, I don't think people should share every emotional response they ever have, even on the Internet, even on their own personal (publically posted) journals--at least, they shouldn't do so if they don't want people to think, "Oh, sigh."

rageprufrock's entitled to feel however she wants when she sees her done-just-for-fun writing analyzed to pieces. I can empathize with the twinges she feels at seeing it done.

But that doesn't change the fact that her response is an irrational one. The fact is, lit-crit-type activities are not done for the author. Almost always, it's just better for the author to stay away from lit-crit discussions. (And it actually really annoys me when such discussions get labeled as con-crit, as if just because they're not flames and are thoughtful, they're supposed to be constructive for the author's writing. They're not. They're about the readers and their engagment with the material. And the readers are allowed to engage with the material that way, even though the author only produced the material for fun.)

I also understand an author's desire to seek out everything that gets said about her fic. But if she does that, she needs to realize she's likely to get her feelings hurt. If she seeks out those discussions anyway, and does get her feelings hurt, the proper response is just to suck it up.

Publically posting an essay about the experience, encouraging people to think harder about what their lit-crit does to the poor amateur authors, is just wanky.

Simply posting an essay about the experience, on the other hand, could actually be kind of cool, if done right. But I think the essay would have to conclude with, "And that's why, even though I adore getting feedback, and even though it's great for fanfic-readers to do literary analysis, I decided not to read other people's literary analysis of my fanfic anymore" or "And that's how I realized the world does not revolve around me" or something of that nature.

Wow, this is the second time I've commented on a wank in as many days. Feels like forever since I was here.

I guess I think this doesn't seem much like Pru--not that I know her well, but like she says, there's a certain reserve a high-profile writer has to stand behind most of the time, and she seems to be aware of it. A post like this from her feels sort of out-of-character.

Really, I guess it's just because if anything I wrote was ever critiqued by a serious fic discussion community, I'd be supremely flattered. Nervous, antsy, sure, probably petrified they'd hate what I wrote--but primarily, honored that they took anything I wrote seriously enough to discuss seriously. Period.

*shrugs*

Bitch, please.

Despite the nitpicks and a couple of inconsistencies in some of the details, it's that that makes this story such a good read, and one that holds up well to re-reading.

Other than a couple of places where the reviewer felt that the characterizations were a little off, the story got a positive review. Sure it wasn't "OMG UR FIC IS TEH BEST!!!!!!11" but constructive criticism rarely blows that kind of bullshit up an author's ass. So, why the hell is she rambling on about how her fic got "torn to tiny, uninspired pieces, taken out of context, mauled by readers, and picked at--and have to gloss it over with a shiny, mature veneer." That's the reaction I would have expected had it, you know, shown up on some badfic site and had been mocked to pieces.

Pru's response smacks more of a of a pretentious literary-type whining about how the plebes don't know "high" literaturefanfic and, therefore, have no right to comment on her great work of literaturefanfic and less about the actual review. I know the type and they make me want to throw my tea cup at their heads.

Dial it down. It's constructive criticism and not cancer. Jebus.

I love all the people indignant about people over-analyzing fanfic when it's supposed to be just for fun.

Because it's VERY SERIOUS fanfic about a very silly, poorly-thought-out sci-fi show.

Mm, hypocrisy.

See, this is actual wank, right here! Hypocricy! Overreaction! Irrationality! Minions flinging themselves into the fray with little no regard for their personal safety! Deletions and unsubs! A wanker whose pretention shouts itself to the very mountaintops and who attempts to draw direct parallels between herself and the Romantic poets (if only in reaction to criticism).

*happysigh* After the endless clusterfuck that is Harry Potter/Harmonian wank, this is just a treat. Like getting a filet mignon after subsisting for months on Spam.

Not everyone likes her work and showers her with rose petals and tells her that her work is the most supremely perfect thing they've ever read and that they worship at her alter of genius-osity! (which is what I've seen happen to her in every other fandom I've seen her in. I try to avoid her stuff because her ego is *huge* and her writing is...decent)

WAH! Someone said a few things about her work that hurt her widdle feelings. (of course a lot more people said it was brilliant and wonder and typical of her amazing fabulous-ness!)

And so *that* makes the concept of applying literary criticism to fanfic BAD and SILLY and she doesn't know why anyone would ever imagine such a thing was acceptable. 'Cause it's NOT!

Bitch PLEASE. This post never would have happened if it had been more rose petals and praise for her...then she would have went on in silence, taking herself as fucking seriously as always.

(loved the minions ego stroking, btw. Business as usual with her! Especially the second comment: And it was very unfortunate that the discussion started while you were what, flying over the ocean? OH NOES!!11 Discussion isn't allowed unless you're sitting in front of the screen!)
