Case in point, the response to this article:

White Pirates, Black Pirates? (2005-08-26 12:17:13)
This is very old news, but just came to our attention. In episode 5 of 4Kids localized version of One Piece, the skin of a black pirate was changed to a tan mulatto / white color.

92 comments so far, varying from 'ZOMG 4KIDS IZ RACIST!!!!' to 'NO, 4KIDS IZ RIGHT!!!!' to 'OMG, ONE PIECE DUB SUX!!!' and 'Why do you even CARE ABOUT THIS?!?!?'

so many good quotes from this one, but the one that really struck me was this:

As someone who went to a Southern school that was very concerned with diversity and wiping out prejudice, I'd say so much tolerance was hammered into us that many of my classmates are afraid to say anything that could be construed as racist. And any time anyone made the slightest generalization about one ethnic group or another, they were pounced on, and wank such as this ensued. Sometimes the fight against racism goes a little too far, IMO.

I'm kind of glad white people are the ones who do most of the complaining about racism. In fact, I like to think of it as community service after several hundred years of misbehavior.

It's not just the Southern schools. I've grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area, a hotbed of liberalism, which I think is for the most part, a good thing. But I went to schools that were always mostly white, and they drilled diversity and whatnot into us from a very young age. So not only did I never interact much with people of other races, but I was terrified to say the wrong thing when I did. I still feel awkward talking to black people for that reason: not because I'm a rascist, but because I'm terrified of being considered one. :-/ It's no fun.

Really, when I lurk there they are always wanking about something. Once I saw them arguing about emotional tailgating over someone's death. But I guess for the most part, I tend to be asking for it if I click anything with the words "4kids," "Toonami" or especially "Naruto" in it.

I tend to side with the person who said they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. Poor Jynx hasn't been the same since she was made purple. She used to be dark and mysterious, now she just looks diseased.

And why is it always black parodies? Surge was a huge white parody and no one called him offensive! And look at Lombre and Ludicolo! Gratutious Mexicans and no one wants to ban them! They even learn Thief and even with that no one hates them!

You know, I've always considered the ability to laugh at onesself important. You may call the Irish drunk and angry and I'll... agree with you. xD Stereotypes are stereotypes, and they're funny. If a person can understand what a stereotype is, and how it applies to reality, then they're good no matter what. I've got a friend who still refuses to admit that Jews revere the positions of lawyer and doctor, and she constantly gets in arguments about it. It's just not worth it.

I used to not find jokes about drunk/angry Irish funny, but I learned long ago when I realized that my family has a history of alchoholism and clinical depression that yeah, some stereotypes are there. And if you laugh at them? They get more amusing, at least.

And while we're on the topic of kids tv butchering shows... here, have some puppy kicking (icon)! Please note that this is from the same ep where he whips baby digimon until they cry and forces them to kill each other. But Fox Kids only thinks of the puppies. Amusingly, the only funny violence in that episode WAS the puppy kicking. The thing bounced. Ahh, censorship wank.
