DC Comics Wank
The DC Comics fandom is usually a rather quiet place with little drama. Lately, however, fans have been becoming more vocal about certain choices the editorial staff have been making.

Like letting Bill Willingham continue to totally destroy work on the "Robin" series.

People complain, a lot stop buying it, and it became something of a running gag. Until the new issue of "Batman" was released last Wednesday.

To avoid spoilers, let's just say there was a huge bit of character assassination going on, and people have been going nuts. Often. And in public.

So, people gripe and moan about it.

Then Mr Willingham himself shows up, and promptly begins to insult prove his point to the fans.

In said thread there is fighting, and flaming, and grown men crying like little girls (much to Willingham's scorn, of course.)

"Well, see, there you have us, Ian. At the big secret Bat conference wherein all of this was planned, we didn't think anything through. One of the dirty little secrets of the funnybook biz is that no one currently working can outthink the joe-schmoe fans. Pardon the mockery, Ian, but this is the kind of statement from you that wanders into unreasonable discourse. By all means dislike or even hate what we've produced. But taking that extra step of speculating openly that we didn't put any thought into it crosses the line. Don't do this again."

...Buh? "Me mighty writer. You pathetic fan. You listen to me, now."

"I: Yeah, the Batman editors as of late have been making dictates that are bizarre at best, crap at worst, but this one takes the cake. All the screwed up events as of late probably tie in with the Infinite Crisis but that still does not excuse them in the slightest.

B: Now you're once again crossing that line, speculating about things you have no knowlege of. I've never had to ban anyone in any forum I've run, but this is the sort of thing that will quickly earn a banning."

Remember, kids, don't voice your opinions if you disagree with the mighty writer, or U R BANNED, NWB.

"Here's something you readers need to realize: Though we generally hope readers will like our stories, hating them is almost as good. Hating them so much that yours is the one book everyone is talking about now -- well that's golden. One can't hate without passion and involvement. The one reaction we most fear is indifference." -- Bill Willingham

Negative attention = YAY??? Oh-kay. Sure. Whatever you say. All I know is that this crap scared me off buying his title's ever again.

Just... pain. Immaturity. People using big words like they think it makes them RIGHT or something, since they know how to spell them and all. Just... ugh. Wank. What else can I say?

This is why I got out of DC fandom two years ago. Because the writers were batshit, and I *knew* all the whinging in the world wouldn't change it.

As for DC not normally being wanky, it depends on the boards you read. I used to visit some wanky comic book fanboards.

I'm just getting into it, thanks to the JLU Cartoon and the excellent fiction I've got the Hook Up with.

Of course, it's right when they're killing off all the charcters I like. Dammit.

DC makes me cranky. Not the charcters, Oh no, but the people? yes.

/lakidaa at the LJ, who is hoping The Question will make it out of this Crisis thing notdead.

I SO never got that. I love Fables to death, had the pleasure of meeting Willingham in person and found him nothing short of funny and charming, and then I take a look over at the Robin fandom and it's one big "DUUR?". It's like there's some sort of split personality thing going on.

Dear Bill,

Tragedy = good.

Craptastic writing passed off as tragedy by a lazy writer = not so good.

No love whatsoever,

I can't help but wonder if he's just not a superhero type writer--his original book, Fables, is insanely great, and his Robin stuff is...less great. And I was so excited when it was announced he'd do Robin.

I was wondering when this would wind up here. Ugh. I don't read "Batman" or "Robin," but I do read (and adore) "Fables." It's a shame that such an awesome writer of the one series has to suck so bad at another AND be an enormous dick about it. BW, I'm disappointed. :/

He and Chuck Austen can't ever meet, you do realize that? We'd have an idiocy/arrogance overload and the multiverse will collapse or something.

"Here's something you readers need to realize: Though we generally hope readers will like our stories, hating them is almost as good. This makes no sense. The moron made me drop Robin- I just don't care enough anymore to force myself to read this character-assassination he terms plot. How can this be good? He sounds like every average Suethor- you're not deep enough to understand me OMG PLEBE!!!11!11

Oh, and he did say (on some interview, I think to Wizard- right after he took the title, don't have issue number- someone scanned it to scans_daily) that he didn't read previous material. Dolt! At least read the past ten issues or so! (which rocked, BTW. Paranoid, suspecting everyone Tim? Cool.) Anyone else reminded of the HP writers who write fanfics without reading the books?

LALALALALA I can't HEAR you, Willingham. LALALALALALA.

I have always disliked Leslie for her extreme pacifism (I save the serial killer! I save the serial killer now! What? Other innocent people need my attention? But I am making a Statement! How dare you judge me!) which, well, read a lot like willful blindness to me. Oh woe, Batman uses violence to bring criminals in! It's WRONG. You have to, uhm, talk them into going back to jail! Or rather, love them until they reform! *rolls eyes*

But this? Willingham sucks at superhero writing, but most of all he sucks at checking his writer ego at the door. NO. THESE ARE NOT YOUR CHARACTERS, DUMBASS. They have personalities and faults and virtues, you idiot. You have to write them accordingly.

(And now I keep picturing Leslie and wee broken Dick. "I will let him die, Bruce, to teach you a lesson! He is, after all, 10. He's TAINTED BY YOUR LIFESTYLE! Die, Dickie! Die!")

You know, for all that I dislike Willingham's statements and his writing on Robin, I still think a lot of the people bashing him to hell also need to STFU.

Some of the time it seems as though people are trying to make him responsible for every single shitty thing to ever happen in DCU. Just... way too much anger.

(But then, I forgave Austen for arse-fucking my favourite characters, too. What the fuck do I know?) (/rant)

Negative attention = YAY??? Oh-kay. Sure.

Uh, yes, baby. Negative attention in media is great. Haven't you ever heard the saying, "There's no such thing as bad publicity"?

Not trying to start anything, but take a look at Jesus movies. Almost every one of them gets a big crowd of Xians at the opening, protesting and yelling and criticizing a film they haven't seen. Do the production companies try to stop it or decry it? HELL, no. It's free publicity and they eat it up. Anything that attracts attention in entertainment is a boon, because then lots of people who wouldn't have cared will check the thing out, whatever it is.
