Gundam Wing Wank
Hi. *waves* This is my first time reporting wank here, so I'm just hoping this hasn't been reported already.

When Gundam Wing ran on Cartoon Network, it sparked several thousand teenies to scream "TEH PRETTEH BISHIE" and make crappy character shrines full of the offical art found everywhere else (Not to mention fun yaoi vs. non yaoi fights, bad fan art/fanfic, but I digress).

http://www.vauss.com/wufeisux/index2.html

A site dedicated to bashing Chang Wufei (as a joke), and the angry fans who flame the webmistress WingZero and her associates. At it's high point, they reviewed other Anti-Shrines, getting into a flame skirmish at one point with some of them. (http://www.vauss.com/wufeisux/3sgrandchild.html)
Be sure to read the "Last Goodbye" rant with the claims that the fandom is dead, and the people who emailed her are idiots because she was some other person too. Or something.

with the claims that the fandom is dead

I was under the impression that GW fandom was reaching beaded pony status even before it was shown on Cartoon Network and it got its new fan influx. (Then again, I could be wrong, I'm not a fan of GW.)

Anyway, welcome to F_W. (BTW, is that a Ragnarok icon? Cute. ^^)

Yep. I <3 Ragnarok (The character designs, more specifically).

And you're probably right about the fandom being dead long before CN. I only saw the CN run, so it's all still pretty recent to me...I'm such a n00b. ^^;;

I like the art design of Ragnarok too. I've been buying the manga and reading it, but sadly, it's failed to tickle my real fancy - as nicely drawn as it is, the plot is a bit TOO generic even for me, and more importantly, the characters aren't gripping me. It's interesting that this manga was the influence/inspiration for Ragnarok Online, though.

Anyway, yeah, pretty art. ^^ Wouldn't be surprised if some of its fangirls are slashing Loki over there with Chaos either, especially after some of the dialogue in the 6th (or was it the 5th?) volume where he was sort of admiring Chaos' personality. *LOL*

I loaned the novels to my roommate, she's way ahead of you (She's writing a fic, I think).

I was briefly part of the fandom when I first got into the whole 'yoai thang!!!111' about six years ago, and I don't think it had quite hit that status yet--there were still some decent fic writers around, but people were starting to run out of ideas for stories, which is how we got some really weird shite. The whole fandom was fairly oversaturated, as it seems anything s-ai/yaoi-related was with GW.

I jumped bail for Slayers when that fandom first started here, so I'm not quite sure what it was like leading up to the CN days, but I do recall there not being as many anti-Relena/anti-yaoi debates. ^^;

And I remember when *Slayers* fandom reached beaded pony status! :D

Nah, actually, I try to keep from pointing out to my roommate *who is a massive GWing and mecha fangirl* that GWing is obviously as dead as a beaded pony. The only people left in the fandom, that I've noticed, are all either 35 year old career women *no shit*, or 16 year old fangirls that just *won't* let it die. O_O

And a sign that the fandom is getting old is when the *weird**shit* fics start coming out. O_o Like the Sailor Moon Abortion fics...

I jumped ship the moment the flame wars between the OTP-shippers of various varieties started popping up. Maaaaan... I was too much a coward then to stay around to see these fandom get beaded! Gargh! ::smacks head::

Say, does that mean Domlijah or any LotR RPS are already old? ::is shot!::

I don't think Slayers has reached "true" beaded pony status just yet, though. I find there's plenty of ideas still left to explore (I have yet to find a truly, TRULY good Gaav x Val fic, at least [go figure that the yaoi couple closest to being canon would be the one most screwed over :P]. Oh hell, even the excessively popular couple that is Xelloss x Zel could do with some good fics - I can still count the few that were ok on the fingers of one hand!), though it's definitely "dead" compared to what it was 5 years back when the shipping wars started to get truly heated. At least the fans that're still around can breathe a little easier... I think. The really weird fic ideas have definitely started to crop up, though.

So I guess we're only a "mostly beaded" fandom, at least in comparison to GW. Like, the pony's pretty much finished except for the beads missing in some parts - maybe on the ass or something.

I agree... as it is, I can't really keep up with my muse most days; it keeps breeding plotbunnies. Some of them are inspired by other 'fics I've seen in Slayers...I think. ::ponders:: I'm sure there's a few, I just can't think of them offhand. I know some others were inspired by fics from other fandoms ("Trip to a Dream, Dragon") and still others were from RPGs (The whole "Impossible Dreams" trilogy I've still got to write). There's still a lot of good fodder there. I think the problem is most people don't think outside the box. -_- "teh Slayers r in HS yea i no it been done b4 but not liek this r+r plz!!111!11!!"

(I have yet to find a truly, TRULY good Gaav x Val fic, at least [go figure that the yaoi couple closest to being canon would be the one most screwed over :P].

I want to write that pairing. It'll be referenced to subtly in the Valgaav-centric "Battle of the Dragon" songfic I'm doing, but I do want to write them. What's stopping me is two things, mainly:
1) I'm already backlogged with 'fic ideas as it is, and I'll admit I'm avoiding any possible plotbunny warrens until I can get caught up a bit more.
2) My muse hasn't outright flung any plotbunnies at my head (it does that sometimes, when it gets tired of me avoiding the warrens. ^_^)

Heh. Oh, Slayers...

I first got involved in that fandom about five years ago. I got out of it two or three years ago, because the fans had gone from pleasant and trying to explore the characters and the world through fiction to - well, screamy fangirls who hated Amelia because she was 'macking on their man', made all sorts of bizarre claims, and attempted to smack down ANYONE who wasn't writing their OTP. I dunno if it's gone BACK to nto being a beaded pony, but the fanbase drove me into running off and hiding behind obscure fandoms!

(And I *love* Garv/Val. It's ABSOLUTELY in there - It's gone WAY past subtext stage. Wrote a Garv/Val fic once, but that was a LONG time back - still haven't found more than one or two others. Which is sad - I figure it's because Garv is NOT attractive, so the fangirls don't want to slash him. Ah well.)

Six years ago? Woah, dude... I first got online about 6 years back, and I can track back my beginning to get into yaoi fandom to only a little less than that (if not the whole 6 yet, it's definitely 5). So that means we got into it at about the same time. Cool! :D

(Then again, maybe it's not that big a surprise. I found out about yaoi through looking at FF7 fandom, and that was not only at about that same time, but it also brought one of the largest influxes[sp?] of yaoi newbies EVER.)

The pairing wars. There were several can't we all just get along, or at least less virulent! sites. It seemed to get really crazy, F_W would have had a field day 10x a day with all teh wank produced by GW at its er.. height? low? Including several authors who basicly said "I can't take getting so many flames for writing the "wrong" pairing, I'm out of this crazy fandom(though some of them posted quietly to websites even after that.) and thats only the part I found most ridiculous(the flamers not the authors, theres only so much insane pointless flaming an inbox can handle after all)

I'm still a huge fan of Gundam Wing, actually- but I've always avoided the fandom, because I seem to be one of about three fans total who like it for the characters the way they were /originally written/.

Here's the hoping the "fandom" is dead or dying, so that people who actually appreciate the show can step forward. *huff*

Oh god, Gundam Wing. This brings me back. I got into the fandom when it started on Cartoon Network (that was, gah, how many years ago? Three, I think) and there was wank and activity a-plenty. If anyone feels like going dredging, I imagine you could find the horrible pairing wank ("OMG, there is NO evidence for 4x5, WTF are you thinking??!!11!?" "1x2 is SOOO cliche! 5x2 is teh new 1x2!!!" "Wufie scusk sooo much how can u liek him??" "OMG, WUFEI is teh angst! everyonexWufei!!"), the flamewars over characterization ("Heero is such a bastard!" "No he's not, he just was never held as a child!" "Duo is so happy and hyper!" "Have you even seen the show? It's a facade, bitch!" "Quatre is just a woman with a penis." "Is not!" "Is too!" "Is not!" ad nauseum about every character who ever appeared), and the unbelievable "is Trowa a rape victim?" shit. Did anyone else see that? It was scary fun. Gah. The flashbacks are starting again. Need some vodka medication.

There were whole sites devoted to the "Trowa is a rape victim/No he's not!" arguments. (It was the scariest wank by far IMO). I wonder if there are any still active?

Oh god, I remember those sites. Although my clearest memory of that whole debate was the incredibly wanky resignation of the owner of the GWML over the issue. It was awe-inspiring. Some of the anti-raped Trowa rants I'm most familiar with are still up here. They aren't the wankiest, but they're a testament to what once was.
