Ah, childfree, you can be a veritable font of wankery.

It all starts with [info]ariel88 making a post to childfree concerning Hurricane Katrina and a nurse.

Someone dares to call the post crappy, and things turn chaotic.

Lord knows I have plenty of wonderful, beloved friends who never want children, so I know for a fact it's not true of childfree people in general, which is a relief... but that board always seems to be full of the pissiest people. Never afraid to jump out and overreact, even against each other; gotta love it.

I'm sure we're all glad that ariel88 is never going to breed. Where exactly did she think the sick, new-born infants could be evacuated to? Aren't many of them dependant on machinery (such as incubators) to keep them alive? And she calls a woman who's doing her job by staying with them and keeping them safe as best she can a "bitch"? *fiery rage* Thank goodness the sane members showed up and told her to STFU.

Also, she needs to read this post which explains exactly why people are staying where they are.

Okay, so this community doesn't want children - but still - to call an unborn child a parasite? *boggles mind* Have some of these people forgotten where they came from? *pointed look*

And that's to say nothing of the lack of basic humanity the original post seems to show. Okay, you (the poster) don't want children - but can't you have the decency to recognise the helplessness of these premmy and ill babies and understand that someone has to look out for them? Or what, just let them struggle on their own? Darwinism, any one?

Sorry - but this thing just makes me sick to the stomach - and I'm not finding a WHOLE lotta humour in it (or some of the opinions being represented in the threads of the OP, either)

I'm leaning towards childfree myself, in philosophy (though, thank God, I don't think I'm quite old enough to breed just yet)--but seriously, WTF? Childfree is such an incredibly misleading name for these deranged assholes. I thought that community was supposed to be about discussing a lifestyle choice and the repercussions it has on the people who make it and support for all of those endless "But when are you going to settle down and pop out a few?" confrontations. But this?

I don't think I even want to look at cf_hardcore.

We are not all bonkers. Asinine posts and extremists happen in any LJ Community, folks.

As you saw in this kerfluffle, plenty of members took exception to what Ariel said. Plenty more (including myself) simply ignored the post as too stupid to respond to and waited for our preferred stories of being kicked around by society for choosing not to have kids.

Can I state, just for the record, that I think Tequilatamm is a stupid bitch who probably hasn't yet determined which orfice to shove food in and which to spew it from? I work for a NGO that specificially helps children during disasters like Hurricane Tatiana, and the reason why is that children are specifically helpless and suceptible in a way that most adults have grown out of. Children cannot TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES the way most adults can, and when they are separated from their caretakers (as often happens in emergency situations like the Asian Tsunami), they are especially vulnerable to being preyed upon or being hurt. They simply haven't aquired the survival skills that adults should have. THAT, you whorish ass-cancer, is why people make a big deal about dead children and hurt ones in emergencies.

Are you f*ing kidding me???? What is wrong with this woman??? Has no one told her that something like 80% of the buildings in New Orleans are not expected to survive this hurricane?? Because:
1. People do think of others.
2. People do help others despite risk to their own safety.

I'm undecided on whether I want to have kids--I mean, I love my niece and nephews, but can only take so much of them--but the CF communities seem to attract people who absolutely despise kids in a way that borders on the insane. Especially the hardcore set. I wouldn't want them anywhere near my sister's very well-behaved children.

I'll never get how people can actively HATE children. Even though I love kids and work with them, I can understand some people not wanting their own, not wanting to work with them, and not having the patience to spend much time with them.

But these people that call them "horrible monsters" and just are disgusted by their very existence.... do the realize that THEY were once bratty children as well? EVERYBODY on the face of the planet must go through childhood. At one time EVERYONE is aspoiled, selfish and whiney CHILD. A fact of life. Deal with it and STFU.

And sometimes people remain the childhood stage. I can spot a few of those on "childfree". Quite ironic.

I'm going to resist the temptation to draw some sort of general connection between not wanting children and lacking completely in altruism, because I'm still holding out the hope belief that most of the people at that comm aren't batshit.

Sometimes I wonder if they're just really scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to post. Bad experiences with kids and "breeders" are one thing, but why lash out just because some woman's pregnant and works with babies?
