How dare you go to a videogame convention when people are starving in Mississippi!
What's better than DragonCon wank? A whole hurricane of it!

[info]eindrachen has a bone to pick with DragonCon, because the attendees are spending their time and money on something other than Red Cross donations in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Only he phrases it so much more eloquently:

I hope that anyone who won't manage to donate their precious DragonCon time and money to help the rest of us, well, you can go fuck yourself in your posh fucking hotel room.

Just know that every fucking hour you spend rolling God-damn dice or playing Roshambo with other assholes, the rest of us will be over here in fear that we can't drive, go earn a paycheck, and possibly put bread on the table, not just for ourselves, but for our loved ones, too.

And you can get all this garden-fresh bile for the low low price of one forfeited ticket to DragonCon. Because they totally give refunds three days before the Con.

But wait! There's more! Order now, and you also get:

Comment Bahleetion and The Ban Hammer!

Public Mockery!

Bahleetion Revival!

And your friendly neighborhood [info]h0_patrol offering an alternate forum in which people may voice their opinions without fear of being struck down by aforementioned Bahleetion or Ban Hammer.

Come. Rejoice. Or at least point and giggle. Because fandom just wouldn't be the same without 30-year-old fanboys pitching hissy fits about gamers.

ETA: There she blows again! [info]eindrachen comes back with a "clarification". Which, of course, is more wank, but with comments disabled this time.

I was told that my "idiocy" was being spread around the interweb. Well, considering the interweb is 99% full of moronic asshats anyway, I guess I'm unconcerned.

Eat up, kiddies!

My favourite bit is in the comments where they're griping over the Red Cross being a Christian organization.

*sigh*

There were so many better ways he could have made his point. Besides, that area desperately needs the revenue they can bring in, especially since you know that tourism to the region as a whole is going to be low for possibly years to come.

What does he want con-attendees to do exactly? Drive down there and be soldiers for the three days they would have been at a con they already paid for?

(And is it wanky for me to wonder how he's found the time and means to get on the internet if his situation is so terribly awful?)

But if you can't spare even some kind of effort to helping in some way, your opinion on the situation has zero weight to me.

Because the only r33l Intarweb-approved way to help is to, erm, get refunds by robbing the Dragon*Con piggy bank? Or should I read this as implying that no Dragon*Con attendee has donated to Red Cross/name-your-relevant-charity?

Confused, I am.

I can understand what "eindrachan" was saying, but it's not fair to expect people to stop living their lives. I mean, even people in New Orleans were in the French Quarter at bars right after the hurricane hit. Sheesh.

Besides, I don't think any of the victims would want others to just drop everything they were doing.

Of course this: "giving checks to welfare kings/queens who teach their children how to rob the system, too."

Uh huh. Well, you know, some of those victims were those very "welfare kings/queens" you complain about. Bah.

And of course, he's not considering the fact that a lot of fans tend to be very socially concious. Probably a side effect of how widespread fans are, no matter how far away people are, they probably know someone near where the disaster is. I've always found that fans tend to look out for each other.

Except when they're wanking, of course.

Bitch, please. I live in Baton Rouge. Our population has doubled in the past week and many still don't have power. I was part of the first 25% to get power back. Stores are still closed, despite the fact that BR's population has doubled in the last week.

And yet, I can still drink a latte without feeling beset by guilt. MOST people here would welcome the chance to escape, not wallow in their (in his case, alleged) misery. Everyone that's been displaced from NO that I've met has been utterly gracious.

I would like to say, for the record, that not all people from the South are as selfish as this.

I have friends at DragonCon. They are there to promote their books, sell art, etc.

Their plans were laid, money paid (up to 2K in various arrangements and fees for one artist), etc, well in advance. Most of them are not the sort the Red Cross is looking for to volunteer.

I know them. They're earmarking portions of their sales, giving until it hurts, even though they live on the edge themselves, and feeling guilty.

Will that make him happy?

Dude, I can help out the Red Cross and Hurricane Katrina victims, and still feed my newfound addiction to Anachronism. Besides, Dragon*Con is a great place to collect money, donations, and other forms of aid; the con is pretty much a bunch of geeks with money, for crying out loud! If a good chunk donate a buck or two from swag funds, it should still add up to a nice sum of money for the people in that area.

I ended up ditching a con to donate the money I was going to use for it since I had no excess funds to give, but that was my own choice that I made after a lot of reflection. I'm happy my friends are still going, because they wanted to very badly and this was something they planned in advance. Life goes on--people have always been in trouble, even in one's own town (remember the guy on the street with no teeth and a weather-beaten face with hopeless eyes and dirty nails panhandling for cash?)--yet people still do their own thing. People are resilient. And I definitely agree with the general sentiment that a con would be a great way to raise funds (and show that geeky fen can do something too--like what Penny Arcade did for video gamers).

I too smell a case of misery loving company here.

Oh for fuck's sake. I'm on the coast too, we just got power back two days ago, and it's rough all over. A few miles from my home a man shot his sister in the head over a bag of ice. A FUCKING BAG OF FROZEN WATER.

I hope the folks at Dragon*Con have a hell of a good time this year. We can't expect the whole world to stop revolving because we have a problem. It's this kind of "the world revolves around us, dammit!" thinking that so many other countries hate the US for. Did you not go to a New Year's Eve party because there were drowned bodies washing up onshore in Indonesia? I didn't think so.

I went to Dragon*Con and spent nearly $300 of my own money I had earned over the last year or so. Not including airfare I had purchased weeks before the hurricane hit. Sorry, I think I'm doing better helping the U.S. economy for the greater good than just helping New Orleans. Plus I have a right to live my life; I'm sure if Cali was underwater this fucker would still go on with his life. He sure as hell seems to have been unable to part with his internet despite his idyllic ranting.

from the journal of [info]lfp6:

"Some of the Stormtroopers of the 501st had volunteered to paint red crosses on their armor to help raise cash for the American Red Cross.

Total proceeds from them alone: $17,000

Some of the other celebrities pitched in for the charity auction as well.

Overall, the A.R.C. got from our con over $100,000."
