The Wanking of Emily Rose/Anneliese Michel
So Hollywood has comenup with another true story to base a movie on, with "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" being based upon the 1970's exorcism of German student Anneliese Michel.

There's wank about everything on this one. Condensed onto one convenient page. Wangsting about Hollywood tarnishing true stories, people being dumb enough to believe stories like this, the Amityville Horror, White Noise, etc. are real and so on.

But the true gems come from those who are on both sides of the "is possession/exorcism real" debate. Because clearly if you do/don't believe in demonic possession, you haven't read your Bible correctly.

Also people with Real Live psychological/neurological disorders step in (and argue about the differences between the two) to say that clearly Anneliese merely had a disorder/was clearly possessed.

I (and a few others) am still wondering what "unsettled sexual development" is.

I'm wondering now, too, a Google serach only comes up with sites related to Anneliese Michel. Maybe it's 70s Psychojargon for a condition that's diagnosed differently or with a different name or something.

Maybe it's "code" for homosexual?

Reading these comments I just find myself imagining one going, "She only likes other girls because she's got that unsettled sexual development! She'll settle down to straightness just as soon as the baby Jesus bitch slaps the gay out of her."

That is totally unsubstantiated, and mostly random, but no one (on that blog) has provided an actual explanation...

I haven't found the term in any of the German sources. There it simply states: "Sowohl eine gestörte sexuelle Entwicklung als auch die diagnostizierte Schläfenlappenepilepsie beeinflussten, so das Resümee der Ärzte, Annelieses Psychose." Which is the same sentence, but includes "disturbed sexual development". My guess is that it's some sort of mistranslation.

It seems that Anneliese Michel couldn't come to term with her own sexuality at all, whichever form it took. She repressed it completely, and when she was "possessed", the "demons" started "kissing attacks" on her father, for example.

That's one movie my best friend and I aren't seeing. We saw the preview when we went to see "Skeleton Key".

*watches preview"*
Me: I won't be seeing that.
Adriene: Yeah, me neither.
Me: It's the whole being Catholic thing.
Adriene: Yeah, actually believing in demonic possession and exorcisms really puts a damper on things.

So yes, I do believe in demonic possession. I slept with the lights on for DAYS after I saw The Exorcist.

Agreed... as a mostly-Christian, as much as I try to discount some things, there are still things that I may buy the part line on now and again. Demonic possesion is one of them. Don't know if I believe in it, but don't know if I disbelieve in it either.

At any rate, they won't be getting my money for this one. :-/

Aahh, a Catholic childhood. It never really goes away.

Case in point four of my friends who one day decided to try their luck with a ouija board. All of them lapsed Catholics, all of them now level-headed atheists. Hah. Thirty minutes and one sincerely creepy session later one of them was running as fast as she could towards the church to grab some holy water and "free" the other three from whatever demon they believed they had managed to summon.

I might be as agnostic as they come, but dammit. Demonic possession? EEEK AH FUCK NO TAKE IT AWAY. *curls up into a little ball and rocks*

I can't even watch the TV spots for it. The generic spooky background comes up, then they announce the title, some animal part of my brain goes "Oh noes, my name is Emily! Something scary is going to happen to Emily! Run!", and I change the channel reallly quickly.

Mmm, some good stuff amongst a huge heap of tl;dr.

For instance, synapse's assumption that the 1970s were during the dark ages:
Apparently, the exorcism of Anneliese Michel was recorded. by what means I don't know, maybe only sound (probably seeing as it was around 1973).

And steveo, master of rhetoric:
If all of you people believe in the devil and demons, then its as true as the saying these days "every woman needs to be bare foot and pregnant in the kitchen doing dishes and serving me dinner"! Say this to your woman or any woman and watch how quick you get smacked!

Same fucken thing here, you are all going to get a smack, its not true, ghosts, whatever else is for halloween.

And the person of exotic dining habits (where are these schools?):
flies especialy fruit flies are also filled with nutritions..in NY there is a restauraunt in which they serve flies,, they also serve choclate covered flies in schools...

I have to confess that with the number of people who have now died during exorcisms, I find it odd that the movie industry still thinks it's the demons we ought to be scared of. A movie that got psychologically in-depth about how a bunch of deeply sincere, well-meaning people could inadvertantly conspire to kill their own child in the name of salvation would freak me out way more.

Additionally:
How did a discussion of this (crappy-looking) movie become a religious tirade? When were people sent the memo that now was the time to trot out the born-again Christian spiel and Jesus-freak on us? Oy vey. Next thing you know a discussion of Firefly or the Gap or something similarly secular will spawn massive fundamentalist wankery...

The whole thread had me laughing but I just loved this bit here.

"i don't believe in witches but i do believe the devil can enter people's bodies and houses. the salem witch trials were obviously the work of an insane society not bedeviled women. i understand why people with family members or who themselves have a mental illness are freaking out about labeling anneliese as "possessed". they are afraid of shattering the politically correct assumption that the mentally ill are not dangerous"

I can't decide if this person thinks the people of Salem were actually possessed or mentally ill. But I'm guessing this person is trying to say that the people of Salem were all mentally ill. It makes me want to show them the PBS special where a scientist concluded that the girls were simply suffering from ergot poisoning because of the symptoms they were exhibiting which makes much more sense to me than the whole town being mentally ill, the girls being cursed by witches or possessed by the devil.

what i have always found interesting is that only Catholic people are "posessed". does this mean they are doing something right or wrong? i'm guessing wrong since you aren't supposed to be able to be posessed if you really have accepted Christ in your heart. i don't see how both a demon and Christ can be in the same body.
