Wanking about Rob Liefeld's Art
Rob Liefeld, for those that don't know, is a comic book artist. In the general opinion of comic fandom as a whole he's regarded as terrible artist and little more than an art swiping hack. A suject of many rants, including several on the Gaia Comics Discussion forum. Not suprisingly, one of the Gaia posters called Ziegfried decided to take his argument to Rob's personal forum.

The day has barely started and we are 4 pages into the rantings...

Bitch, please. There is a HUGE fucking difference between 'reference' and 'inspiration', and just plain lifting from other sources. After all, no artist is truely free from outside influences. But the point is to take those influences and express them in your own unqiue way, not practically trace.

It's also pretty damn sad that he lifts from other works, and STILL fucks up the bloody anatomy. Oi.

Hello, FPB here. The issue, to me, is not so much the extraordinary badness of his anatomy. A few great cartoonists have been terrible at anatomy - one thinks of Robert Crumb, Carmine Infantino, even Jack Kirby (although in his case it was more a matter of not giving a damn, and if he had to he could produce correct renderings). It is the utter, total, breathtaking lack of mind behind these renderings. They say nothing; they describe no state of mind that anyone can recognize; they do not make use of the third dimension; they often have no background at all. Liefeld does not think about anything he draws. All that he does is reproduce parasitically a few cliches he has learned from comics long ago. It has never even began to occur to him that the work of drawing might have anything to do with reality.

Liefeld marketed the action figure of Youngblood's archer character, Shaft, as "Rob Liefeld's Shaft: 7 Inches, fully poseable," an unintentional double entendre.

About the wank, I didn't really get to see it since it got bahleeted before I got here, but from what I gather the main points were 1. Liefeld sucks and 2. Liefeld steals your art. I can't say as I'm going to argue with either. But I don't really understand the outrage that accompanies the baleetion, since, like, it's his site and he can fucking do what he wants with it. Personally I think it's a little cowardly to delete things that criticise you, but if you consider somebody to be trolling it's your right to squeegee them off your forum. Can't argue with that.

I remember when he first came onthe scene and eeryone was praising him as the most dynamic thing to happen to comics since color printing. He even ended up in a Levis ad because he was some sort of wunderkind.

Almost every issue of X-Force (which took the place of the reasonably better, if badly titled, New Mutants) contained a full page splash, characters posed almost Kirby-like. And all the lines on the page forced your eyes to one central focus point, in every drawing. The Mighty Marvel Crotch-shot was born.

How he continues to get work is amazing. ( I must confess that I am disgusted, and more than just a little envious.)

I'm still partial to Bernie Wrightson, Joe Jusko and the lot from the old Warren publishing days of Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. Though Art Adams did some pretty good work as well.
