Stargate: Atlantis wank

her post seems to implicate thepouncer, wickdzoot, carolyn_claire (who as usual thinks it's all about her precious thecuttingboard community), and possibly some others, at least as many others as it would take to constitute a "clique".

What this wank is about - oldbies vs. newbies, negativity harshing one's mellow, big name fans calling out other bigger name fans. Bad science in SGA stories. Um... other stuff.

But wait, there's more. This all seems to stem from a locked post which trashed several Johnny-come-latelies to the SG:A fandom, most prominently rageprufrock who was the star of last month's SG:A wank. In the ensuing drama, alyse deleted her journal in a huff (back now); rivier went completely friendslocked (because OH NOES people not in her clique on her friendslist were commenting on her journal!); and wickdzoot announces she's doing a fandom flounce and deleting her website.

ETA: According to [info]munchkinott we are getting three wanks for the price of one! Alyse-and-rivier-huffage is due to "That was the great SG:A newsletter 'everyone has a RIGHT to know, by the POWWA of intarwebz journalizzim that the must-know people in this fandom have borink liiiiiiiives' blow up of a fortnight ago." And there is apparently a "SPOILERS OH NOES" wank as well.

brighidestone tries to be reasonable.

girlclone mocks them all.

Alas, most of the really dishy wank is either locked, retro-locked, or deleted.

Unsurprising. Well, much of the SGA fandom migrated from the SG1 fandom, and it was in that context that I developed my general disgust with how fandom groups operate. I love my show, and I love a lot of people on an individual basis, but once they start building their in-groups, then, geez, they can bring the evil.

SGA, is it the newest fandom_wank star? It has a different schtick from recent up and comers like FMA, but if it can deal with the wankers being a bit too Cliff's notable, it has potential.

Not that I'm insulting Rodney's character! Rodney is perfect! He is an angel of good and light! All those times he's a total jerk in canon? Never happened! In fact, we should all be more like Rodney.

Ha ha, I like the part where girlclone's post is wank-disguised-as-snark:

Insert long and sort-of well thought out post in which I expound on (yet again) my personal take on characterisation in SGA fanfic, but which is actually a thinly disguised attack on another person in fandom of whom I am envious because their writing is so much better than mine or my friends.

Really? People would only want to go after another fannish person because they were envious of her mad writing skillz?

Back in the years when I was active in fanfic stuff (rather than passively reading stories and barely even notcing who's written them), I'd sometimes want to post a full-out criticism of a popular author's story if I saw scads of people complimenting it, with no one noticing (out loud, anyway) what I thought were obvious flaws. It can be crazy-making! To see praise gush out for a not-great story! And it doesn't have to be a fandom thing. I think it's more a matter of, "Wait a minute! Who has the bad taste here? Me or them? Let me detail everything that I think isn't fabulous about this story and see if anyone agrees with me." I mean, it even bothers me when I read a mediocre professional book that's gotten nothing but rave reviews, and I'll want to analyze the book with other people.

But in terms of wanky fandom stuff, sure, if the author's personality rubbed me the wrong way I'd feel an even stronger desire to post such a thing, because I'd feel less like being charitable towards her work.

I wouldn't do it, of course, because all that it would achieve is a wankstorm.

The point is, though, "a thinly disguised attack" on another author's work--or even one that's an attack on the author herself, as girlclone says --doesn't have to be based on the envious realization that said author is a better writer. It can just be a matter of really disliking the author's work, or even the author herself.

They're wanky things to do, but coming back with "you're just jealous!!", even if it's disguised as snark, is wanky too.

Different wank stream. That was the great SG:A newsletter 'everyone has a RIGHT to know, by the POWWA of intarwebz journalizzim that the must-know people in this fandom have borink liiiiiiiives' blow up of a fortnight ago.

That sent various people from the newsletter round to random other people's LJs to STRONGLY DISAGREE with (see: troll) anyone who didn't concur that SG:A fandom's equivalent of CNN should, y'know, stick to SG:A meta and babble - instead of linking to boring RL posts from Potter LNFs who can JUST about find the time in their lives to say last night's episode was cool. Hence the journal deletes and the friendslocking were more to cut down on posts from 'I don't know you, but I'm OUTRAGED of Hogwarts and you have an AGENDA and I wish to protest LOUDLY!'

So there's TWO joyful wanks to be had here.

I'm with Merry's various and sundry confused commenters: confused. I hang around SgA and read what is often rather excellent fic, and I have never noticed all this apparent wank. What? Where?
