Boundaries? We don't need no stinkin' boundaries!
angel_josie wants everyone to know that some things are off-limits for fanfiction writers (and this time, it's not chan!)

I know that there was a time when there were certain writings that people considered untouchable: religion, mythology, Shakespeare, history [...] etc. And now? Now there seems to be no boundary to what you can write fanfiction about.

And behold, fanficrants did lay the righteous smackdown.

I'm heartily amused by how she mentions Shakespeare in with the "untouchables", as if Shakespeare didn't himself write anything that fictionalized historical figures, or any of that... Way to make your point. *G*

Also, gotta love the random emboldened words of indignation!

I remember back when a fanfic writer felt compelled to write an alternate version of a story, so people could choose between the story that contained something edgily out of bounds, and the story that wouldn't disturb them.

The difference between the stories was that the sex scene in one of them included a brief description of rimming.

Ah, innocent days.

Best comment, by valarltd: Paul perpetrated this tradition, and started the new one of writing about a show he'd never seen.

There was a time when people didn't write religious fanfic?

Personally, I have a hard time deciding which is worse: the people who are serious, or the people who deliberately try to piss off the people who are serious. (Jesus/severely underage!Harry Potter anyone?)

Objecting to historical fanfiction? WHY? That's the best stuff out there! I mean, who doesn't want to imagine the South winning the Civil War, the USA fighting allying with Germany to win WWI and taking over Englnd-ruled Canada while fighting the CSA teamed with England and France and those other nations!

Who could object to THAT?

Well, you can argue that Anne Rice has done the same. In Memnoch the Devil, her main character goes to heaven and gives God the idea for Jesus, and basically tells God how things should be run. And God goes 'huh, yeah, that was a good idea, I'll do what you say!'.

Tell me this isn't true. Please, someone, tell me that she didn't actually write it like that.

I know that there was a time when there were certain writings that people considered untouchable: religion, mythology, Shakespeare, history

Religion: As others have pointed out, all the various translations of the Bible basically equal fanfiction. And clearly this girl has never read the ever so wonderful Lamb: The Gospel According To Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. The image of Jesus as a six year old eating lizards to bring them back to life never fails to make me laugh.

Mythology: Again with various versions basically becomming fanfiction. Not to mention Shakespeare using mythology and sundry historical figures to create his "untouchable" works.

History: ~points to the historical fiction genre and rests her case~

Yay! This is the second ranter in about a week who would be OFFENDED and APPALLED by my fic! Of course, this time it's an original novel and not fanfiction, but still.

Someone needs to tell them about Anne Rice's autobiography of Jesus. Or get her a signed copy.

... Shit, I recognize this person... she's in a puzzleshipping community with me... -_-;; As for the mention of Greek Mythology being "untouchable", dude, the ancient greeks themselves wrote about their gods in different lights (aka altered characterization), poked fun them, and changed events around a bit to suit their plot. It's not quite fanficton, but it's pretty darn close. Look at Aristophanes.

But...but what about the Madeleine L'Engle bible fic? It was awesome! Plus Washington Irving's George Washington fic!

Also, someone should tell her that a good deal of Shakespeare is fanfic itself, dontcha think?

Y'know, I bet the Pre-Raphaelites would be miffed at being told they were doing fanart of That Which Should Be Untouchable.
