Battle of the Popslash BNFs
It started so innocently. One of the Sandies posts some stories that she wrote as birthday presents. Feedback of all stripes is welcomed and Betty takes her literally and leaves a comment which can now only be read here because it's since been deleted.

Defriendings occur.

A new post is made about constructive criticism. A clarifying post is made about the original comment.

More clarification occurs, this time by the original writer of the story.

Along the way, other people get their feelings hurt.

And then two BNFs living off their reputations of old decide to make their pronouncements from on high: Pot and Kettle. And the rest of us tell them to SHUT THE FUCK UP!

There are many more posts making some reference to the events of the day, but these are the main ones. If I missed any or any of them turn out to be locked (I didn't check) I'll edit. And it should be noted that this entire kerfuffle is about a secondary character in the popslash fandom. For those who are unfamiliar, Trace is Justin Timberlake's best friend. I suppose you're not really famous until there's been a fandom war about you so the boy has now arrived. Heh.

Oh, and Katie? Happy Birthday ;)

No no no. My post doesn't count. BNF's and semi-BNF's and aspiring BNF's have written on this subject. Ignore me.

This is the best summary of the mess.

Hah! I'm not a BNF either, brat. But how could I not link to posts telling Syncronick to fuck the hell off? Geesh.

Haha Lain you come out of LJ retirement for one day and you end up on F_W, that's truly inspirational man.

And now that BettyP has seen fit to totally misconstrue what Lain said, it's quite fitting that I link it. After all, she is a BNF. :)

This entire wank seems to be fueled by people willfully miscontruing things. Oversensitivity, it's what's for dinner!

Am I the only one getting the feeling that Bettyp is going to be twitchy and over-sensitive for ages over this?

This is what happens when you believe that people are asking for honest feedback. Let this be a lesson to us all. Don't try and engage anyone in an honest dialogue about their choices in characterization, because it'll just be very, very bad.

Ah, the sweet smell of a popwank.

I don't know, man. All this because of Trace? Kind of makes your blood run cold.

I'm going to take up a collection for everyone's two cents (or more, as the case may be). I'll be rich, man, because I bet it's still coming.

I'm sure it will. There was actually more this morning. Mary just can't seem to shut up about it.

Considering that's pretty much all there is to say, yeah, I can.

Ooo, so many links of classic wank.

Let me see if I'm getting this: someone posts a story, all feedback is welcome, she gets non-flamey, nicely worded constructive criticism that hurts her feelings, and then everyone and their sister goes out of their way to slam the feedbacker? Did I get it right?

The BNFs dropping by to offer their opinions was a nice touch, I must say.

That about sums it up, but you missed the best part. The person with the hurt feelings over the feedback is not the person who wrote the story. The person who actually wrote the story was off at work all day and oblivious to the whole thing. Heh. *pets fandom*

Oh! That *does* make it even better. Her friend had her feelings hurt over a story she didn't write?

It would probably help if I knew the fandom better, but it's still funneh!

Ah, but I don't think it was because of the comment at all or at least not totally. It was also this post http://www.livejournal.com/users/bettyp/101675.html, which Betty made shortly after Sandy posted her story. I thought this writes as all fanfiction should be written -- *as* a fan, finding the humanity that only a writer who genuinely likes her subject can write. was more than a little wanky.

Yes, that does sound pretty wanky. *g*

I'm not sure it should be that upsetting though. But I'm not in the fandom and I only know a little about it from a friend who is, so there's probably all kinds of stuff I'm missing.

That comment does come off as rather wanky when taken out of context, but i believe Betty only posted that entry after her feedback comment was deleted from callmesandy's journal. So i think she was probably thinking "wtf?" and attempting to clarify what she meant by her comment, since it had gotten such a violent deleting reaction.

Even less than the actual comment she made, it was more about BNF minions taking sides and pulling punches over something they hadn't even seen.

No, actually I saw Betty's entry first on my friends page wondered about what had provoked it and then went aha when I saw Sandy's story and Betty's comment was still there at the time. I guess I must have a relatively wankfree friendslist because the only people I saw making a fuss about the whole thing were the BNF's involved and Synchronik and Helen.

Ahhh, that does change the perspective a lot then. Obviously most of the wanking by the BNF followers began over the 'mean' comment, but now i wonder whether the BNFs would've started such a ruckus in the first place had the journal entry not been made.
*sigh* Me too, my friendslist is depressingly level-headed. Whenever i want good wank i have to live vicariously through my friendsfriends. It's a hard life.

The main thrust was that the feedback was posted to the journal entry where the story was mentioned, so it was public. That was the issue, as I saw it.
