The Real Wank at GAFF
Thanks to the mouse on the last GAFF thread.

thecleric007 decides to report Miss Cam's "Official Fanfiction University of Middle Earth" to ff.net for breaking its prohibition on interactive fic. Then she boasts about it on GAFF.

Well, what do you think happens?

Somebody reported OFUM, it of the hordes of official minions? Oh dear me.

(What do you call metafic that tried to make fun of the clichés and badly written fanfic but ended up crossing the line itself?)

I have nothing against Miss Cam, or thecleric007. I just think this whole thing is hysterical.

"Like ooooh my gawd! Someone has dared to report a super popular story with a ridiculously big following because he/she thinks it broke a rule! That's so meeean...and stupid! Yes, stupid! I shall insult you because a person who would dare to report a story I like is a stupid...mean...person! Gag me with a wank-soaked spoon!"

Raise your hand if that logic sounds at all familiar?

(Hint: You'll find it throughout the New Releases section, specifically where enraged fangirl authors and their fans/friends/sockpuppets are involved)

Actually, I believe that fic was actually removed for breaking the TOS, which is why I thought that all the other OFU fics would count as breaking them. Mistakes happen, and since none of the other ones have gone, maybe it was something particular about that one that made it dissappear (I think it may have not requested apps by email, but I'm not sure, I wasn't really paying attention to such things when it happened).

Oh, boy--a wank I'm directly involved with!

Now, don't get me wrong--I'm pissed off that OBAFU might get removed, so it's definitely personal--but what really gets me is that this guy admits to having spent "a good chunck" (sic) of his day seeking out and reporting OFUs! I mean, where's the vendetta?

Not to mention that according to FFN's TOS, it's reeeally stretching it to say that OFUM (or OBAFU) is "interactive." The FFN definition is thus:

Any form of interactive entry: choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As, and etc.

By that definition, OFUs don't qualify.

Hm. Seems to me the logical thing to do over at GAFF would be to ban Cleric for breaking the rules. After all, as someone pointed out over there, GAFF exists to laugh at bad fanfic, NOT to go around enforcing other websites' rules. So he's as much of a hypocrite as the people he's beating his chest at, isn't he?

Wow, I've been wanked, snazzy.

I did not know that Miss Cam had actually asked about the fic being allowable or not. It looked to me like an interactive fic. One of the spin-offs was even taken down.

If I was wrong, whatever, I don't run FF.Net and if they decide that's not interactive, then power to them. I still think it's hypocritical to not report something you think breaks the TOS just because it happens to be good.

My fave comment by the OP:

I'm not saying it's a bad fic, I'm saying it doesn't belong on FF.Net. The reason that site is viewed as being so horrible is because of people abusing it.

Hey, I thought the reason ff.net is horrible because of the bad writing! I had no idea it was because of people flooding it with poetry or scripts or interactive stories!

Question? Why DOES ff.net ban these forms of writing? Anyone know? Because if it's to keep the suck down, it ain't working.

FF.net is a cesspool. I'm surprised anyone still cares about it.

This is just a funny thing, you know. ofum was only interactive in the most broad sense and it was certainly not enough of a rule breaker to warrant all the effort taken in destroying it. The rule against interactive fics was put there to keep people from submitting "Hi im doing a fic send me ur cahracters and ill use them" kinds of stories which weren't really stories. There's no rule against several authors co-writing a story, which sounds more like what ofum was about.

Plus Cleric just went and made himself a lot of enemies with what I think was a rather dumb move. We'll have to see what the long term effects will be.

Interesting. Now, a question. If this story wasn't well written, hadn't been written by a GAFF member, but still didn't break any rules, would the wank still have happened? Or would there just be a few posts about how you don't boast stuff like that before the thread was hijacked into some kind of discussion of the most disgusting pizza toppings ever heard of?

Dude, wanna talk karma? The GAFF board is populated with pseudo-trolls who live to rip "unworthy" authors a new one, gleefully reporting them to ff.net or flaming them to shreds on personal sites. And a lot of the OFUs are written by GAFFers or friends-of-GAFFers, or in the least have heavy GAFF readership. If you don't believe me, check out the OBAFU, which includes a Mary Sue Destroyer (or something to that effect) section, wherein people go in and rip MSs apart and basically bully (key term, there) the author into deleting the offending fic, then pat themselves on the back at the victories.
A lot of the GAFFers are bullies, and the OFU runners all too pretentious and self-congratulatory...usually unfoundedly. I know the Buffyverse OFU author often complains that she doesn't get enough reviews on her fic and cites the "gen"-ness as the reason ("Wah, wah, people only read NC-17 slash!"). Nope. I have friends who write primarily gen/non-ship fic, and they get reviews and kudos up the wazoo because their fic rocks, whereas HH's all tends towards the bland/preachy/clunky narrative/wildly out-of-character.
My point - and I do have one - is that to me, the wank isn't that cleric007whatever unfairly reported fics, ir's that the wank is flying because the GAFF crowd finally got a taste of their own petty and vindictive medicine, and c007 was just dumb enough to brag about his victory on their private little stomping ground.
No, I wouldn't have reported the fics personally, mostly because I'm too damned lazy to care...but will I shed a tear over the hypocritical, self-appointed upholders of fanfic standards getting a taste of the very negative shit they've been polluting the fandom with for years? Fuck. No.
