Oh look, HP wank sans Harmonians.
[info]maeglinyedi creates [info]mental_fans, a support community for HP fen with mental problems. A few days later, she makes a poll about which HP character is likely to have Borderline Personality Disorder (there is much armchair psychiatry in the comments, proceed with caution).

[info]darkasphodel doesn't think either is a good idea and says so, relatively politely.

[info]maeglinyedi proceeds to spectacularly overreact.

I am so happy that I left the Harry Potter fandom for the Star Wars fandom. In Star Wars, our biggest problem is people bickering over whether Anakin or Obi-Wan should be on top. XD

Is the lack of Earth logic an actual mental illness? Because if it is, I think fandom is suffering from an epidemic. Either that, or mass drug rehabilitation needs to be instituted to get people off the crack.

Okay, so, apparently this is something I'm going to say, because it's still bothering me. Wow, that wasn't a few more days now, was it?



There's been a lot of talk late about mental illness and disorders. Now, before anyone thinks they can jump all over me for this, let me say that I think this is not a bad thing. Many people spend their entire lives trying to hide their problems, and talking about it in the open is great. But there's a few things that have been bugging.

There is a reason many support groups are heavily moderated. There is a reason these moderated support groups are the ones more likely to be recommended by professionals. It's needed, in most cases. An unmoderated group has a tendency to be a very welcoming place, and yes, that is a good thing. But an unmoderated group can also promote or prolong unhealthy behaviors. There's a want to tell someone who is going through something difficult that it's okay, and that is great to hear. But what if it isn't okay? The thing is, a support group is usually used when someone is actively going through or has successfully gone through treatment, and there is a moderator there who keeps an eye on things. Who makes sure there is forward progress, not stagnation. Who tries to make sure if there is relapsing, it is worked through, not placated. And here in fandom, there seems to be a very strong tendency to placate. All I can do is hope that people will be encouraged to seek help, and not drawn into an unintentional cycle of unhealthy behavior.

There's also been some talk about diagnosing certain characters with a particular disorder, and that bothers me more than a little. Which, again, this is just me. But I can't recall a discussion about which character has most likely been raped, or which character d'you think is the most promiscuous, or what do you think so and so's IQ is? Those things are dealt with by many in the form of writing, which I encourage full-heartedly. Just for the record, I encourage the exploration of mental disorders through writing as well. It's...it's the labeling that is bothering me right now. What about that person who identifies the most with Sirius, who happens across a comment that discusses as if fact, Sirius' Bipolar Disorder? What about the person with Chronic Depression that happens across a discussion that labels Peter that, in conjunction with many of his less pleasant traits? Which brings me to another thought this has brought up. The traits/symptoms for mental disorders and illnesses overlap so much. Professionals have trouble differentiating sometimes, and they know a hell of a lot more than I do, a few classes in college and google are not enough at all. What's more, the traits and symptoms apply to people who are mentally healthy. Yes, to a varying and not overwhelming degree. But things look so out of proportion in discussions sometimes. A quick example:

Glibness/superficial charm
Grandiose sense of self-worth
Pathological lying
Cunning/manipulative
Lack of remorse or guilt
Shallow affect
Callous/lack of empathy
Failure to accept responsibility for own actions
Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom
Parasitic lifestyle
Poor behavioral controls
Early behavioral problems
Lack of realistic, long-term goals
Impulsivity
Irresponsibility
Juvenile delinquency
Revocation of conditional release
Promiscuous sexual behavior
Many short-term marital relationships
Criminal versatility

Apparently there are people in this fandom who think that creating a small group for HP fans where we can talk about our mental problems, or putting up a silly poll asking which character you think could have a personality disorder is not a good thing and might even be dangerous.

Right.

Obviously, I don't agree with that.

Let's start with mental_fans. Is this a support group? I wouldn't call it that, really. It's a place where people who share a few problems can talk about their experiences. Is this a place that will enable bad behavior? Not if it's up to me, because my standard response to anyone saying they think they have a problem is: get some professional help. And then I'll tell you about my experiences because perhaps you can benefit from them.

I've been to a RL support/therapy group, lead by professionals. Three days a week, where we had to sit in a fucking circle and talk about our emotions, and where we had to work on art projects like we were a bunch of fucking three-year-olds.

And you know what I found most useful from that whole group? Sitting down during break with a fellow patient, outside in the sun, smoking a cigarette and drinking a cuppa, and just talking with each other. Just sharing our own experiences about how you even begin to deal with having a mental illness in relation to your family or your work or school. That's what helped me the most, that I could talk to someone. Not to those who've gone to school for 8 years to learn all about the human psyche, but to those who've experienced exactly what I was going through.

Yes, getting professional help is a VERY GOOD thing and in my opinion something everyone should get. But just talking to someone who knows what it's like can be just as helpful.

And because everyone lives in different corners of the globe, we're doing it through a lj community. If you were all living in my town, I'd invite you over for tea once a week so we could have a friendly chat.

Am I the only one who thinks that "Sirius' Bipolar Disorder" cannot possibly be discussed "as if fact," him being a fictional character and all? And that if you're overly concerned about Sirius' BPD or Peter's depression, that in itself is a sign you maybe ought to get thee to a mental health professional?
