John Byrne vs. Wikipedia.
Some mice on [info]wank_report directed me to this one. I'd never heard of comic book artist/writer John Byrne before, but any wank involving an author vs. the fandom is pure gold.

Apparently, Byrne wasn't happy with the Wikipedia article about him. So he edited it.

Pre-edit article.
First edit.
History of all Byrne's edits.

As you can see, his edits involved deleting most of the text, including the fact that he is a Canadian. Outrage ensues.

You can read the The Wikipedia Talk Page for lengthy bickering over the edits.

Wikipedia bans Byrne for vandalism. Byrne complains about it to his fans over here. A Wikipedia admin shows up (near the bottom of Page 2.) Everything goes to hell in a handbasket.

NM

ETA: Best line of wank from Byrne's forum. Jon Juzan: IMDB.COM has lost a lot of respect. If Wikipedia hasn't already, it will

Wikapedia apparently bans Byrne for vandalism.

Ah. So they've read his version of Doom Patrol.

I saw the pre-John Byrne and post-John Byrne versions and am thoroughly confused.

Shouldn't any egomaniac worth his salt be bloating the page beyond recognition!?

Six paragraphs on how wonderful he is! Ten on that time he saved children from a burning building! ALL SHALL LOVE ME AND DESPAIR!

Instead he trims it down to nothing. John, man, where's the (masturbatory self-) love?

Also, I'm now half-inclined to make an icon that says SHHHH! Don't tell anyone I'm Canadian!

See, now, Wikipedia . . . Wikipedia has some amazing stuff on it, in a wanky way. Check out, e.g., a user named Xiong; start poking around the pages on "micronations"; look up a guy named Sollog; check out the "requests for comment" and "requests for arbitration." It's a lush, near-bottomless ocean of crazy people typing very fast.

</i>On the contrary, you fail first step out of the gate, when you present as an "encyclopedia" something which can be "edited" by anyone who can access the site.</i>

So you see, he doesn't have to work with Wikipedia, because their entire concept is ridiculous and flawed. Also, "why" does "John Byrne" keep "using quotes"?

Let me address one thing here, the use of real names. That was something JB insisted on since later in the AOL days, IIRC, and I think it's good. I like feeling like I'm communicating with real people, and don't have to say things like, "That's a good point, Gamaliel," to use a recent example. I don't however, have the illusion that everyone here is using their birthname, and not using a "real sounding" name, their middle name, an alternate spelling of their last name, etc, etc. It's not a problem, unless it turns out to be someone who was banned, pretending to be someone else, or they're using a fake name for some other sinister purpose, and it's discovered. NO ONE is forced to use their birthname, we simply ask that they use a "real name" when registering here, that's all. We're not conducting background investigations. I know that many people who use the internet like to maintain a measure of privacy, and that's fine. We just don't like talking to total cyphers. Isn't that a crazy concept?

So - what he's saying is, I'm allowed to make up a name and pretend to be someone else entirely, but it has to be a name he knows and approves of?

I mean, if Gamaliel says, "Fine, then, call me Mary Beth Schmidt, although that's not even close to my real name," then suddenly these pricks are okay with it?

Seriously, if you're not using your real names, why act like you are? If I said "Mary Beth Schmidt" people would think that was my real name, and be more taken aback to learn that it wasn't than if I was calling myself Arwen Tinuviel. And how is a name that's froo-froo a "total cypher"? It's not like she signed it "user38820".

Wow, is he a pretentious fuck. Both this tool and John Byrne himself.

John Byrne has been wanking on the Net since before I got on to it. I once used to collaborate with a mag called COMICS INTERNATIONAL, which had a feature on comics-related internet news, and once they came up with a huge amount of Byrne spooge - to do, as I recall, with his indescribably awful version of Jack Kirby's New Gods. I wrote in to ask whether there had been nothing else on the Net for one whole month more worth of notice; failing which, I said, watching paint dry might be an option.

Byrne is one of those guys who came in as a prince but remained as a frog. Along with Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, he was responsible for one of the greatest superhero stories in history, the Phoenix continuity, about 25 years ago; since which, he and Claremont have been busy destroying their own talents, sabotaging their work, and incidentally backstabbing each other. It is hard to tell which of the two is the worse, but Byrne managed the truly incomparable feat of producing the worst WONDER WOMAN run in recorded history, which, considering that the WW character had longer and worse bad periods than any other superhero or superheroine ever, is quite some trick.
