Mini-Wank: Your fanaticism killed the Box Office
There appears to be a slight mini-wank between one of the writers over on CHUD.com and the Browncoats (fans of the TV show Firefly and movie Serenity). And Joss Whedon himself - the creator of both - has just waded in.

The box office numbers for the weekend are in and Serenity, (the movie based off of the canceld TV series Firefly), took in $10.1 million, slightly below the predicted $13 to $17 million weekend. However, this news caused CHUD.com writer Devin Faraci to call out the Browncoats for being "evangelical" about Fierfly/Serenity; to the point that it turned people - who weren't rabid fans of the show or anything else Joss has written, but who liked Science Fiction stories and may have gone to see the movie - off to it, and that's why the movie "flopped." (Requiem for the Browncoats)

At the end of this weekend, I wish the Browncoats would take a moment from their finger pointing and take a long hard look at themselves and ask if their in-your-face evangelizing didn’t hurt this film more than it helped. I believe there is a huge awareness of this movie, and I believe there are many people who are predisposed to seeing scifi films who stayed home this weekend. The question has to be, “Why?” I think that more and more the actions of small, hardcore fanbases – like Trekkies and the increasingly marginalized Star Wars fruitcakes – are becoming distasteful to the more mainstream genre audience.

Joss himself wrote a reply to it over on the offical Serenity fan board (which is copy-pasted over onto Whedonesque), in which he says yes the numbers are soft, but it's the next few weeks that are critical for the movie. And that he wont stand for any bashing from anyone about his - and the show's/movie's - fans.

We all know this remains an uphill battle. We all know that next weekend is crucial -- and a lot of it will rest on us. A lot will rest on the studio reaching people we can't. And factors we can't see coming. But I don't especially appreciate people calling Time of Death while I'm still operating. I don't like smug defeatism. And nobody disses the 'coats without me wading in. That's all.

ETA: And CHUD.com writer Devin Faraci has now replyed to Joss' reply:

. . . . and the thing I kept returning to in my head is that the “Browncoats” are seen, by many other genre fans, as overzealous.

There’s no way to quantify that. It’s a purely speculative thing on my part, based on talking to people and visiting other internet forums. And I base it partially on the fact that nobody likes an evangelizer. Nobody wants to invite the Jehova’s Witnesses in to bullshit when they come a-knockin’. You want those people off your doorstep, and ASAP. . . .

. . . .Again, it’s not the scientific method, but those are the factors that came into my opinion that the Browncoats kept the core genre audience from seeing the film this weekend. (And in fairness, someone asked me just how big that core genre audience is, and I have to admit I don’t know. I do feel like it’s bigger than 10 million dollars, though) That has nothing to do with the mainstream’s reception of the film, and that’s important to note. And it’s important to note that I don’t necessarily think there was some angry “To hell with the Browncoats!” revolt in the wider fandom. I think there may very well have just been a fatigue. After the preview screenings months ago, and the interim attention from those fans, Serenity felt like a movie that had already happened.

As for the idea that I don’t like the very concept of the Browncoats – guilty as charged! I don’t like any self-identifying pop-cultural group. I find it bizarre and troubling. Trekkies make me feel creeped out, and that was before seeing the excellent documentary about the phenomenon. . . .

It always entertains me to see "celebrities" get their wank on.

However, this CHUD guy does have something of a point, because the rabid Firefly fans have sure as hell scared me off seeing the movie.

It wasn't the rabid fans that scared me off of seeing it. I just don't see movies based on television series I haven't watched. This saved me from the X-Files movie, so it's a good rule.

Anyway, if the presence of a rabid, hardcore fanbase hurt movies, we'd expect the Harry Potter films to tank like lead-lined goldfish.

You know, I'm sure Firefly was a great show. I'm sure Serenity is a fine movie. But I just don't care and I wish everyone would just STFU about it already.

I and the people in the theatre with me were scared off the movie by the preview. There was this line in there, something like "THE CULT CLASSIC THAT HAS ALREADY THRILLED THOUSANDS" that made us go WTF?

Only later did I discover it was a sequel to a show I'd never watched but heard good reviews of.

I admit they do have a point. All the loud and enthusiastic Firefly-quoting and squeeing about Serenity on my f'list have made me wary as hell about watching the movie. And it's also bloody annoying.

Firefly was the program that had scary fanrabids preaching to me in RL as well as online.

But it wasn't the fans that put me off. I sat down and watched the show. Then I remembered why I don't watch anything by Joss Whedon . . . and FF was those reasons times two. When you sacrifice both plot and dialogue for the one-liners, I become greatly annoyed and bored. When you take a bad SF cliche (direct transport of various dead cultures into a SF-based society, aka bringing a metaphor to life THEN thunking the audience over the head with it) and base an entire show around it, I become even more annoyed.

It's a good movie. It's a good show. I can't say anything else about it except that apparently, if it grosses enough, we get a sequel. And since Fox set it up to fail, the fans would like to see one. *shrug*

Gee, that CHUD guy has a point. I mean, isn't the internet sci-fi fandom contingent a perfectly viable sample for the general population of the world? That's the first thing I learned in Totally Fucking Retarded Statistics 101.

(#2 at the Box Office is fine by me, especially at the end of the summer season with a movie that is far more likely to build a groundswell than to burst out with a huge opening.)

Isn't a bit early to be making doom 'n gloom predictions for the film's success in the first weekend? Particularly for a movie for whom half the promotional effort was inspiring word of mouth promotion by fans? And the more rabid FF fans are going to go see it many, many more times - I know one woman who's already seen it six times, and it's only been three days - so I imagine it'll be a matter of slow-but-steady-wins-the-boxoffice.

My god, that is so insightful. Next movie I make, I'm not having any advertising either. That'll rake in the crowds!

I personally don't care because the Firefly fans on my friendslist aren't annoying about it at all, but MAN is it funny to see people get so defensive when they hear someone else isn't into it as much as they are. I haven't seen such fannish defensiveness in a long time.

Also, my husband is one of those folks turned off of the whole thing by the overzealous fans, but that might be because knows more annoying people than I do.

Ya know, Firefly fandom has often annoyed the living shit out of me through its sheer ubiquitousness, God I hope I spelled that right, but that's too damn bad for me. Let them enjoy themselves.

But what the fuck is a "mainstream genre audience"? And where does somebody who writes for something called CHUD get off dissing anybody else in the SF subculture as marginalized? Cram it, Sparky. You're in the same boat as Joe Klingon and Jane Browncoat.

This is the first teeny whiff of "not my cuppa tea" I've seen about Serenity. I was pretty overwhelmed by the squee myself last week - especially the quotes meme. I was kind of hoping for more critical analysis of the film in reviews, and haven't really seen much. I do think there were too many screenings over the summer, and if I hadn't gone with a very good friend, I wouldn't have gone at all, mostly because of all the overkill on my flist.

I guess I am surprised that people are surprised that people are tired of the Serenity squeeing. It's been steadily building over the last few months, and last week it had reached the pretty much unavoidably irritating point. HP does that too, when there is a new release. Even though I'm an HP fan, I get a little irritable when it seems like there is nothing else, anywhere and I'm going to drown in it.

I was all about the squeeing with the first SW prequel.

But, by the time it got to the second and then the third? No. Just hush. I don't want to hear anymore. Go. Away. STFU!

And I didn't watch Firefly --no cable-- and am not going to see Serenity.

I'm lucky because I've only really got one Serenity fan on my list, and she doesn't really squee about it. (And if she does, she puts it behind a cut and I can just scroll on my merry way.)

Seriously, I think people are tired of hearing about it.

First, it was the series. And then it was about getting the show back because it was cancelled, and then it was about the possibility of a movie and then it was about the movie.

Ugh. Some, who are SF fans and might have given it a chance, might have been put off by all the hype. Mainly because advertising, especially for some series/movies (SW/HP I'm looking at you) is all about cramming it down your throat.

So, CHUD? He may have a small point.

See, this is why, even though I quite like Firefly and went to Serenity in the prescreenings (and this weekend to give it money for a potential sequel), I avoid the fandom like the plague.

The fandom scares me.

Dude. It's a fun show. It got canceled because Fox is a dick (see also: Brimstone, Wonderfalls, Space: Above and Beyond, The Lone Gunmen, etc.), and now there's a movie. Yay!

But, wow, over-obsess much (says the pot to the kettle)?

I taught myself how to speak Klingon at the age of seven*, and devout Browncoats scare me.

*I don't remember it. Except baH. That means fire.

Damn. I feel like a Christian in the Coloseum.

I'm a Firefly fan. I'm not going to deny that I think it's a darned good show, and I've gotten a handful of people into it. That doesn't mean I think it's flawless, nor do I think it's Joss's best work. I appreciate it for what it is. And while I'm not terribly involved with the fandom, what whiffs I've caught certainly haven't seemed overzealous or fanatical to me. Certainly nowhere near the kind of hype that builds for, say, Harry Potter.

I saw Serenity opening night. It was good. It wasn't fantastic, and I'll admit to being disappointed on several counts. But it was more than decent, and it's earned back a quarter of its budget in the opening weekend. For a movie based off a television show that had eleven episodes aired, that's not too shabby.

And while I understand of tiring of the fanbase, and being turned off by the batshit - people coming into whatever venue for the sheer purpose of evangelizing? more than a little sexually repressed creepy - at some point I can't help but feel that the people who are refusing to like or even see it because it's popular feel like they have something to prove that they are omgsonotconformist.

You don't have to love Firefly or Serenity. You don't even have to like them. But call a spade a spade - don't claim that a couple of holyrollers have just shattered both your childhod and any desire you ever had to see Serenity.

If this is me being an insanely defensive fan, I'm sorry. There's nothing wrong with having different tastes than I do, and I'm not trying to say there is. It's just kind of shocking to wander into this thread and be greeted with all the bashing of an entire fandom. I'll admit to being relatively new to these parts, but I didn't think that's what we were about.

On the one hand, I sympathize with the Browncoats, in that I am easily as annoying to my flist about Veronica Mars as they, individually, are about Serenity.

On the other, I keep the preaching restricted to my LJ, and there is only one of me. The mild excitement I felt over Serenity (45% somewhat liking the TV series, 55% what it, combined with the Farscape mini, said about the power of geek fandom) has been squashed out of me by the inability to escape the constant hype. It's sort of a saturation point--I'm sick of the movie, and I haven't even seen it yet! So if I do go see it now, the odds are that I'll enjoy it less than if I waited and saw it at a time when the hype's died down.

I honestly don't know that this kind of thing would have any impact on the box office numbers, though. And it's not surprising that Whedon's standing up and so staunchly defending his most devout fans--the coming weeks will be vital in the movie's success, and fans he defends are more likely to do repeat vieweings than fans he does not.

Huh, I've heard very little about this movie so far besides a few people posting their thoughts on the it on my friends list over on LJ. I have not seen even one commericial for it nor have I seen any fans overly gushing over it. Maybe, I'm stuck in some alternate universe, I don't know.

I have never seen Firefly at all, but I thought I'd give the movie a chance if I had nothing else to do one night and it was playing. I'm not sure whether I'll see it or not, but finding out the wank and stuff over it completely surprises me.

I was already put off Firefly by the feeling that Joss Whedon neglected his other shows in favour of it, and by the insertion of Firefly cast members on Buffy and Angel. The constant enthusing about this new film has just managed to cement the idea that I'm going nowhere near it, but it's hardly the only thing to blame.
