Unhappy with the amount of feedback she's getting, [info]fated_to_flames posts a "Guide to Reviewing" that basically amounts to a demand for more reviews, dammit!

The mod, [info]tatooedraven, asks that it be deleted or else, [info]fated_to_flames says, in a word, no.

I can feel the banhammer coiming down.

And I'd have posted this to [info]clairvoyantwank but the OP seemed pretty wanky on her own.

Edit: Ahh, baleeted, but it's on her own journal and the original post is archived here.

4. A lot of us write when we're super depressed. I know it helps when I'm in a bad mood or something's gone wrong to sit down, write, and post a new chapter. So seeing somebody say 'good job, this and this were great'...it really means a lot to us.

Waitaminute. Do you write when you're feeling depressed, or do you read reviews when you're feeling depressed. Because you're making it sound as if you're going to slit your wrists if you don't get some gushing, detailed reviews tout suite.

3. You want to see better and better fanfiction every day, don't you? If we never get any good reviews on our work, we'll never know what you guys like and don't like.

Except if it's concrit, then it becomes ZOMGMEANFLAMES!!!1!11 and ends up not helping the writer anyway, since they ignore and/or delete said concrit.

In all the time I've been a fanfiction writer, I've gotten hardly any reviews, and of those reviews, almost none of them have been concrit. I HATE getting those gushy reviews saying 'write more' or 'I love your story', but that being said, you don't see me out there bitching or anything about not getting reviews. If ppl wanna review, they'll review. If not, then....*shrugs* Getting pissed off cuz they don't review, and then when they do, posting concrit....well that's just seriously lame....You can't have it both ways, yannow....

2. The authors of these stories are busy people. Most of us are college students barely scraping our way through the academics, and yet we take time out to write these stories. Why? For the feedback! We love to be petted and praised. Everybody does. Sure, it's also for the satisfaction of writing a damn good story, but the feedback is what tells us we're doing something right...or wrong.

What about not writing if you're having so much trouble with your academics? I love writing too but if I see I have too much to do then I'll wait for a better moment. It's not that difficult, is it? Yes, I know at times it's difficult to control the urges but... Priorities! Think of them! (Hint: If you study more, you'll get better grades and will avoid "scraping through the academics". It works!)

And putting herself through all that pain and suffering and whatnot JUST for the feedback... Something just doesn't click in my mind.

You should have asked first before posting this, it might have resulted in it remaining and the feedback you crave so much to have been contributed.

Waitaminute. What happened to the post being off topic and inappropriate for the community, as tatooedraven originally claimed? What's that? You mean whether it was against the rules or not didn't really matter because what tattooedraven was really upset about was that fated_to_flames didn't come bowing and scraping asking for permission first?

Oh. That clears things up then.

I always thought there was a REASON why people didn't write reviews of things they read... y'know... be it laziness, or the fact that they didn't like it and are too polite to say "IT SUCKED. TAKE IT DOWN, PLEASE."

Then again, I was once threatened because I never finished my Data porn fic... so I'm not too partial to being reviewed anymore.

I desperately want to agree with her, because I don't have an appreciation for "RIT MOR!!!one!1" reviews either.

But damnit, you can't start a rant on reviews in the face of your reviewers with "Lately my fellow authors and I have experienced the worst drop-off in quality and frequence of reviews that I've ever witnessed in any fandom. Some of us are pretty upset about it..." and expect your reviewers to give you any respect.

If you want to have bitchfit about it (and believe me, I bitch about "update now!" reviews all the goddamn time) do it in fanficrants or your private journal. In the same way you don't bitch to Aunt Marge's face about the ugly-ass sweater she gave to you for Christmas, you don't bitch to your reviewers about how you don't like their reviews. At least not if you would like to continue receiving any reviews.

It's this same mentality that's behind so many fanfic communities dropping down the hammer on anyone giving legitimate concrit.

If someone's writing just to hear '*squee* THIS ROXXORS!!11!', then they're in for some serious hard knock lessons. If their mental stability is depending desperately on reviews, they need therapy.

I've been writing for decades. I write to get the stories out of my head that are always bubbling up. If I get any reviews/feedback, great. If I don't, that's fine too. And if my publisher tells me it's printable, then I'm giddy and doing the happy-happy-joy-joy dance.

The truth is, even if you provide the capability to give a review with just one click of a button, most people won't review. The ones that do are either honestly moved one way or another by your work, someone with a grudge against you, or friends/acquaintances.

I've had all three of the above happen, and that's just the way it is.

Seeing as i got thoroughly chewed out for concriting someone's fic in that fandom, the whole "we want concrit reely!!" part should be ignored but the "we like to be petted and praised" pretty much sums up the attitude of way too many authors in the fandom 9_9 Why oh why do we get so many attentionwhores? When someone gives you a gift, even on a holiday, naturally, you thank them. It's the same here.

I am not sure about this person's fandom, but in my fandom, all my gifts are either rejected goods or second hand. Should I thank them for killing my brain cells?

We love to be petted and praised.

My suggestion, get a dog.

Sure, it's also for the satisfaction of writing a damn good story

Apparently not enough unless you get feedback, which pets and praises you. Let's review: get a dog.

A lot of us write when we're super depressed. I know it helps when I'm in a bad mood or something's gone wrong to sit down, write, and post a new chapter. So seeing somebody say 'good job, this and this were great'...it really means a lot to us.

Am I the only one who thinks she has issues?

...AND 1484 HITS. That means that there were quite possibly 1466 PEOPLE WHO READ IT AND DIDN'T REVIEW. I know this is livejournal, but assuming it's proportional, think about that! An author could easily assume that those 1466 people hated his or her story and chose not to review. It makes us wonder why we even bother, to see numbers like that.

Published authors know their books are read by millions but do they expect a written review from every single one of those readers? Well, they do get money from it... but that's another story.

We feel used.

Then stop writing. Because OMG, liek, we so don't want you to be used. Perhaps you have no life and need to feel use to feel some meager amount of importance? Reviews are nice, but when you write solely for reviews, you need to stop and look at your priorities.

Being a review whore makes a writer oh, so popular.
