DogbreathCanada posts in the firefly_fan community on LJ a regular complaint among the fandom about the series's rights not being released by Fox. At first it's a regular agreement that Fox is-as pre usaul-acting unfairly.

Until Macmathan posts: "In my fantasy world I would love to see HBO pick it up as their dramas are stellar and Joss wouldn't have to lighten up on any of his themes to satisfy network statndards."

To which DogbreathCanada responds:"Obviously you've been far too wrapped up in your Mal/Jayne slashfic to know that Sci-Fi has this little series called Battlestar Galactica. If you'd seen it, you'd know that it's actually got a harder edge to it than Firefly ever had on Fox.

HBO will never do a sci-fi series. It's not their thing. It's not part of their demographic.
