Serenity is "Out of Gas": More Firefly Wank
More tl;dr Firefly/Serenity wank over at Whedonesque when a fan gives a call to arms to "Strap on your blood-pressure cuffs!" Let me preface this by saying that I am a Firefly fan. I saw Serenity opening weekend, liked it fine but have my share of criticsms. That said, my fandom keeps on bringing the crazy.

Actually, if someone could icon that for me, I'd be much obliged.

It all starts with another review by Devin over at CHUD.com. To his credit, it's far less inflammatory, and Devin, did in fact call the 40%+ drop in earnings that Serenity has suffered at the box office.

But even though SoddingNancyTribe (who is pretty awesome in his own right) and the other mods are watching closely, it quickly descends into "a pissing contest" when the Whedonesquers decide that they don't like his [Devin's] tone, or his "sorry attempt to get more traffic for his website."

"See this is why CHUD and AICN will never be anything more than glorified fanboy sites. He can try and dress up his writing as being genuine journalism, but he can never truly pull it off if he's intent on writing "I was right, and you were wrong, nya-nya-nya-nya-na" style articles."

Some more gems from the wank:

KBP: A 22 paragraph article that reads exactly the same as the last thing he wrote? And we're the obsessive ones? Ok.

Allyson:
Okay. I was not entertained by Serenity. At all. I was mostly bored and wondering if I had maybe seen a different film. I do worry about the handfuls of fans I've seen on the net behaving as if they have somehow lost their homes, their life savings, and their dogs due to the flick not making a killing at the Box Office. I was worried when I saw the Variety ad thingy happening. In general, I dig fandom a whole lot, they're my people, and everyone who knows me knows I've gone way overboard on caring from time to time.

But there is a small cult of Browncoats bordering on an almost sort of religious fanaticism. It's creepy.

I do believe that Devin's continuing pieces are cries for attention, due to the baiting language. But I don't necessarily disagree with some of his points about fandom. There are some fans who can't hear, "This is your movie" without taking that as a decree that their very souls are at stake. It's not the great many, and here on the internets, their voices are louder than if we were hanging on the edge of fandom, as I think most fans do.

But Devin is baiting that particular group with these pieces, like poking a starving dog with a stick. There's something to be written about all of this, but I think Devin is the wrong writer for the task.

miranda:
I do not want this turning into a pisssing contest between us and Devin.

So what are you saying – Devin is a bigger dick than us?

I am so terribly sorry! Zero impulse control. Please don’t hit me. To quote Evelyn Waugh: “I would just enjoy it”.

Some sane fen point out that while Devin's language is incendiary (although he says it isn't) but that doesn't mean he's wrong. Watch them be promptly ignored by the rabid masses.

Please don't hate me by association. I'm a quiet Joss geek, I promise.

I can see the name "Browncoats" becoming something akin to "Harmonians," and that makes me sad.

As a non-Firefly fan, can someone explain what the genesis of "Browncoat" is?

*facepalm*

I had a feeling when I saw the estimates on Friday this was going to happen.

The box office all around has been shitty this year, so I'm not inclined to think the rabid fans had much to do with it's drop. (Though yes, some fans have gotten to the "batshit" level of it all, but that happens in lots of fandoms).

Devin should really just let this go though.

It sort of astounds me that that some have lost sight of their wankiness.

I don't think Chud.com guy is necessarily right to criticize multiple viewings of the movie if someone wants to see it a bunch of times. However, buying extra tickets in the idea that your extra $8.50 is going to help a movie go from 9th place in the rankings IS wanky. Urging people in a foreign country to sign onto Fandango to order tickets in the U.S. to help the box office is wanky. And the more they deny that it's wanky behavior the more wanky it looks because then we're talking about fans being in denial. I always seem to have less trouble with wanky behavior if someone will just admit it's WANK.

Oh, Christ. Why is my fandom so insane? I admit that I tried to "convert" people to Firefly, but I had a very good reason. The simple fact is that there is simply not enough Mal/Simon/Jayne porn, and I wanted to inspire others to write it.

Strangely enough, no one has posted wank about that thing in the movie that I really thought was going to fill rabid fans with ire. And I've seen those kinds of posts everywhere, too.

Can I just go back in time when the only fans I knew were the ones writing the hot porn and squeeing about the pretty? I liked it better when the fandom was smallish.

Man, I am so glad I saw Serenity without ever going into an arm's reach of the fandom. So much easier to avoid suicide by wank.

...I will be sitting over here, watching the Firefly gag reel and pretending that my fandom isn't this crazy.

I really wish we could get to see the other two films though. Darnit. Stupid Fox.

Your duty, as a fan, is to enjoy the film. Maybe bring in a friend. But that should be it

I think every fan in every fandom needs to write this 1,000 times with Umbridge's evil pen o' blood as part of their fandom orientation. It might save the world the irritation that is a holier than thou fan.

Bits 'n' Pieces: Movie fan purchased 320 tickets to give out

Monday, October 10, 2005
MIKE BAILEY Columbian staff writer

Who was he?

A man said he bought 320 tickets to "Serenity" and on Sept. 30 stood in front of Regal Cinema Cascade 16 theater and gave them away.

It could have been a crazy promotion by Universal Pictures. Or maybe he was just a crazed fan willing to drain his savings account for the love of a movie.

We may never know the man's identity. But we do have one version of why he wanted to fill the theaters opening day.

David Child of Vancouver and his 13-year-old daughter, Alix, talked to the man after a matinee showing of the movie that's based on the defunct science fiction TV series "Firefly."

"He told me he bought 320 tickets and wanted to know if we wanted to see the next show," David Child said.

When Child turned down the offer, the man asked if he wanted to see a later showing.

The man told Child he didn't get a bulk rate. Child figures he spent about $2,500.

"He's a big fan of 'Firefly' and wants the (box office) numbers high enough that the studio will make more of the movies," Child said the man told him.

Child and his daughter understand the passion.

Alix, who was introduced to the TV series by her dad, spent $50 to buy the DVD set of the series that lasted one season on Fox.

"I'd compare it to 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars' fans," David Child said.

Call me crazy, but I don't find a lot of what's being called wank in this fandom very wanky at all. The constant post-release bickering on the OB, and the reaction to this CHUD guy, maybe. But as far as all the hype and promotion and the buying extra tickets...I just don't understand what the big deal is. I'll agree, 320 tickets like the guy in the article posted in the above comment may be a little overboard, but still- who cares. People get criticized for being super excited about the movie and hyping it up to the point it scares people away, okay I can understand that maybe...but fans can't be generous and let the movie speak for itself either? Exactly how are you supposed to promote something you like- say it sucks and steal people's tickets?
What's wanky about wanting something you like to do well?

I'm wondering it "Save [Whatever]" is a built-in reaction for the Browncoats. I mean, some of the vocal supporters been doing it for a good part of the past three years. Then, they succeed, and then, what can they do? Ploomph, things start to go all sinky-like, so they revert to the last basic routine they remember. It might be ingrained at this point, like post-traumatic stress, or buttoning your pants before you zip 'em. (Nevermind that the panic over the money coming in has been inconsistant from all sides, fandom and non, and DVD sales have yet to be seen. I'll be first to admit $80 mil is one hell of a fantasy, and yeah, sad for no sequels, but yikes, the lack of consistancy hasn't helped the panic any.)

Though, the way I see it, if they've got the money, and they want to spend it without putting themselves in financial trouble ($1000 from every fan? FTW?), hey, great for them, they can go for it. Maybe with a little less belligerent fanaticism and flash mob tactics (I DREAD what will come down the Wankpike on the 13th), but as someone else said a few wanks previous, the support was a good part of what got them the movie in the first place. *shrugs*

(But please, please, don't let them be flashmobbing in costume, pleaaaaaase...)

Well, that is pretty stupid. I don't think by giving out free tickets that this guy was helping the box office numbers. Those he gave tickets to probably would have seen the film anyways!
