Dear Lord, FIGURE SKATING WANK...
In the spirit of figure skating, it's mostly polite wank, but it is wank nonetheless. Mostly, RedDog and Joesitz turning yet another thread into a battle of how RedDog hates Michelle Kwan--no he doesn't--yes he does, interspersed with a debate on why Michelle Kwan's fans are frequently villified (answer: because a small percentage are batshit insane, much as a small percentage of H/Hr shippers in the HP fandom are tarred by the behavior of Harmonian fanatics), the usual, futile, calls for mercy, a tangent on board elitism, "I know you are but what am I" directed at fans of Sasha Cohen and Irina Slutskaya and even, once in a while, actual discussions of figure skating and the original topic (an article by a reporter/blogger who was flamed by "Kwaniacs", the comments on which are actually a wank in and of themselves.)

Here it is and I for one am not getting involved. It's threads like these that make me glad Ladies' is my LEAST-favorite skating discipline.

... and thus, skating fandom proves to have changed not at all in the years since I abandoned it. Huh.

I wonder, is Red Dog Adrian? Or has he just grown clones since I left?

You escaped too, huh?

Wank has always been like that in figure skating, particularly on the inside.

Agh. *facepalm* Teach me to post without looking at the description of the icon. Terribly sorry.

Without further ado, an unqualified ICON LOVE.

Also, this seems like as good a time as any other to ask people if they have any skating slash they want to share.

I remember reading some really terrible Alexi Yagudin Mary Sue fic a few years back. Which makes me sad, because Alexei is way too pretty for that.

Then again, there was some subtextual HoYay. This crazy Yagudin stalker killed Plushy and Yagudin was all upset. So that might qualify if I could, you know, find the damn fic.

Also my problem. I'm so hungry for this stuff, at this point I'd actually like to re-read that fic where Plu rapes Yag in the men's room. If I could only find it, dammit! (For the record I like rapefic, but this one was baaaaaaad.)

Does not compute. I always considered figure skating the Harry Potter shipping among the sports and that's what I love about it.

Joesitz: "I happen to like the Sport of Figure Skating. I like the Men's Division most because it is more about sports than artistry and I just wish they would not wear dumb costumes. Let the ladies do the dumb costumes, but I like the Ladies' Division, too."

Can someone lead this lost gentleman to the ice hockey grandstand, plz?

Oh, c'mon, the hockey guys are wearing dumb full body armour with horrible colours. You just can't win. Well, maybe at speed-skating, but I don't thing this man is that happy with figure-hugging whatever-fabric-it-is-they-use.

Obviously, you have never encountered the C-circuit hunter shows. Everything about skating to me, from cost to attitudes, is easily dwarfed by the sport I quit (allergies and panic attacks and sucky attitudes from other competitors, not necessarily in that order)pales in comparison to the mid-level horse shows, where even though the majority will NEVER go anywhere in the sport, the investment, monetarily and psychologically, is so high people get crazy at the most absurd levels.

Personally, I don't really 'count' team sports as sports per se. That whole 'team' aspect makes any individual effort less important (and hence less individual glory), plus the pro levels are just...well. They're not so much sports as entertainment. Only advantage to any pro team sports--some of the Russian hockey players are kinda cute, but who can tell under all that padding.

Men's skating is my second-favorite discipline (after ice dance because that's what I do) but not so much for the 'athleticism' or 'artistry' but because, well, a lot of the guys are hot, not jailbait, and contrary to popular belief, straight, and they look damn good after all that work that builds up the legs and butt. (Unfortunately, quite a few of those who are straight are also, dammit, married, but a girl can dream, can't she?) Ladies, well, except for a few like Kwan and Slutskaya (the "old women"), too many of the girls look like a pedophile's wet dream, and pairs is too much a toss-the-dwarf competition. (Just because the height disparity worked for G&G....)

Heh--Joesitz would NOT fit in over at the hockey rink, or at least I can't see him, not with his interest in ballet, too. Not to mention hockey skating's rather like speed skating without the finesse.

Not surprising, considering your willingness to redefine words to suit your own personal beliefs (and superiority complex). But still funny.

When you're skating after the puck, then yes, it does tend to resemble clumsy speed skating, but guys who can perform fancy footwork - like Fedor Fedorov, for instance - are valuable on breakaways and shootouts. I'm not saying that a figure skater would be able to adapt well to the hockey environment, I'm just saying that hockey does require more finesse than a lot of people tend to acknowledge.

That said... I'd love to see a figure skater playing on a hockey team. Just cause.

I feel you about the mid-tier h/j shows. That's why I switched to eventing. Sure, we're crazy idiots who risk life and limb, but after the competition is over everyone has a beer and laughs at the people who fell off in the water complexes.

Figure skating has exactly the degree of craziness that I dig and I take your word for it that there are crazier sports, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to learn more about them. And that's an interesting definition of 'sports' that you have going there, good luck with finding anyone like-minded.

I'm happy either way. I don't mind the sight of jailbait and the wet dreams of pedophiles are not my business, but some of the 'older' skaters have the charisma that the kiddos lack, no matter how perfect they might skate.
*burns incense in front of the Plushy shrine*

And maybe Joesitz isn't a hockey fan, but he sure manages to sound like one with his ideas about male sports and female artistry. Me, I demand more dumb costumes in male figure skating.

Not to be pednatic, but... No, scratch that, I'm being pedantic as hell.

Anyways, shouldn't that be "much as all H/Hr shippers in the HP fandom are tarred by the behavior of the small percentage which are Harmonian fanatics"?

Quite possibly. Then again, that would be assuming that the majority are normal and the Harmonians are the small percentage. Which is probably true, but I usually only see the Harmonians...
