RPS Wank: Destroying my hope for humanity, one idiot at a time.
This is an entry in Leadensky's LJ. And lo, it is a wanky entry. Leadensky felt the need to share hir views regarding RPS with the world. Ze doesn't like RPS, oh no precious, though it should be noted that ze has no such qualms regarding FPS/FPF.

"Granted, I don't have the raving frothing fits over it that I used to, when I was starting out in TXF and people (granted, very immature people) were posting non-fictional desires for DD to break up with Tea so he could marry GA. But I'm still not happy about it, and, in fact, mighty displeased that RPS even exists.

(I'm going to use "RPS" to include non-satire made-up stories about real people, be the stories het, slash or gen, and include both pop culture people and actor people. This is one of those places where slash or het, I really don't give a care, it's still wrong.)

I'm still on the fence about RPS being actually fanfiction. This is a problem I don't have with other forms of fandom-originating story-telling. Snarry (Snape/Harry 'shipping) *is* fanfic. It's also porn, and pedophiliac porn, but it's those things *and* fanfic. Ditto smutty "Roh'cest" and CSI. Both embrace and celebrate things I don't accept or find ethically acceptable in real life, but still, they're fiction. The stories are about made up people.

...RPS - because it uses real people - can not be separated from real life. Real people = real life.
...One last thing - on the whole "going to hell for writing [X]". In my book, it's totally not my call. Above, as they say, my pay grade.

So, it's entirely possible that I'm misinterpreting, but the tone of the entry appears to imply that while chanslash/pedophiliafic/twincest in HP etc. are morally wrong, there is something... Extra-loathesome about RPS/RPF. I don't want to answer one moral judgement with another. I'm just here for the drinks, the boobies, and of course, the massive allburning war that inevitably will erupt in comments.
The preceding link represents Round One of this RPS Argument. A couple of our own- [info]shoiryu and [info]eljuno- step in with what looks to me like a relatively amiable response to an inflammatory subject. The OP then makes the mistake of invoking Fandom_Wank- always happy to oblige, by the way- and informs [info]eljuno that he can 'tell his buds' that 'this LJ is *NOT* going to become a battleground'.

Little bit too late, there. The rest of that thread continues civilly enough, which may have something to do with people going to sleep and waking up with less vitriol. Subsequent threads, however, show that the orouboros is far from finished.

Here, se_parsons brings up the tinhats as exemplars of the wrongness of RPS.

And here, purplepopple wants Shoiryu to name names!

In this thread, sa_parsons continues her discussion.

This goes on and on. For twoish pages of comments. People come and go, and some are more coherent and some are less. There are obligatory anonymice, and some gratuitous mudslinging.

I leave the rest, gentle readers, to you.

I could definitely have been more amiable and less "YOU'RE A MORON", but this arguement is irritating as fuck every time I see it.

(Admittedly the journal owner did response without venom, though she was awfully condescending, eh?)

Wow, people are still arguing over this stuff? As a writer, I'd much rather someone write about me doing just about anything than write about my characters. (Although I don't really care if they write about my characters, either--just if I had to choose.) I know I didn't have a threesome with Ewan and Jude (unfortunately). They know I didn't. There's a disclaimer that says I didn't. So, who the fuck cares? And who the fuck cares if someone wants to get their panties in a twist about it? People are always going to write/say things about you that you may or may not like, whether you're famous or the checkout boy at Wal-Mart. Grow a pair and deal with it.

Oooo! Nice, near-invisible segue from the DAGS straight to RPS. Because they're exactly the same.

I am frankly disturbed by people who write RPS and insist it reflects reality as experienced by the subjects of the fic in some way. That gets right to CRAZEE stalker fandom to me and I worry about those people potentially harming folks IRL.

So tinhat = stalker? I know there are a small but scary handful of Viggo/Orlando tinhat stalkers who go to some rather frightening lengths, but equating all tinhats with danger or rabid obsession seems a triffle unfair.Hi, my name's Schmendrick, and I'm a recovering tinhat. Admitting that I have a problem is the first step to recovery!

Reminds me of when I used to read j-rock fanfic. The only reaction from an actual band member I can recall, is when Die from Dir en grey expressed a wish to not be portrayed as a moron in fanfic (or was it dôjinshi?). Forget the rape and orgies, he just wants to be in character.

On the other hand, if they insist on all that lovely fanservice, they only have themselves to blame...

I liked the part where the OP said that RPF counted as non-fiction simply by virtue of using real people's names. And, of course, this is completely true and non-crack-addled. Allow me to demonstrate.

So I was just sitting around minding my own business when Hugh Laurie came over for a lovely evening of wine tasting and general bed-hopping, and then he bought me a kitten and we lived happily ever after.

And it's all true!

Erm ... who wanks in that entry I see a pretty polite discussion. Some people get defensive but not wanky.
Maybe I can't see it because I find RPF slightly tasteless (especially if it's porny) and most of all pretty stupid.
(I have to admit that the only thing I read was the stuff me and my giggly friends wrote at 13. Thank god for the nonexistence of the internet back then. Oh and and awful story about hanging out with the Harry Potter cast. We were definitely better.)
Anyway, if somebody would talk about fan fiction or rape stories or whatever in such a sensible manner, I wouldn't call it wank either.

RPS - because it uses real people - can not be separated from real life.

Oh, but I think it can. Especially when the people you're writing about have probably never met. Personally, I find some RPS much less scary than the communities and websites dedicated to hating people like Katie Leung or Kate Bosworth because of who they happen to be dating/kissing in a movie.

I have to wonder, people who are opposed to RPF/RPS, what is their/your take on historical fiction? Say someone writes a pr0ntastic fic about Alexander and Hephaestion or...I don't know, James I and Buckingham. Is that still creepy because it's about real people, or does the historical distance make it ok? I'm honestly curious.

The whole "real people = real life" thing is rather...silly. Fiction about real people is still fiction, right? I mean, sure, one could argue that every single piece of fiction has spawned its own universe, distinct from our own, but I think that would be a bit too complicated for yet another RPF argument.

And now, a tangent.

Something I've always wondered about with these arguments is this: what about the celebrities that like the RPS written about them? Or even the ones who simply acknowledge that, yes, it's there, and no, it isn't really affecting their lives? Do the anti-RPF/S people think it's okay to write about them or do they still think it's creepy and disturbing?

I don't really have an opinion on the whole thing - I don't generally like real people enough to want to read about them, but on the other hand, I don't really see what the big deal is if other people want to read/write about them.

I just read [info]darkrosetiger's argument in the comments with [info]liz_marks, and now I feel I should offer her a firstborn, or some other form of appropriate tribute.

You know, RPF/RPS squicks the shit out of me, and I've wanked about it on my own journal in the past but...damn, isn't it time to just let it go? Neither RPF/RPS fans and people against it are going to convince each other otherwise, and this circular wank is just getting tired. It's here, people like it, it's not going away any time soon and no one is forced to read it.

It's like debates about chanslash, yaoi, etc. It's a wonder people haven't gotten carpal tunnel from all this wanking.

I'm kind of amused that the OP is using "RPS" interchangeably with "RPF," since in many of these arguments it's the Gaying Up Of The Famous that causes the most angst in the anti-RPF camp. It could damage their reputations! People will think they're really having hot buttsex marathons! And so on and so forth. In other words, I don't think they're the same, for the purposes of an argument like this.

Other than that, it's the same old song and dance. And I'd like to join in offering darkrosetiger great love for her most excellent smackdown of someone who clearly didn't know what they were talking about, re: the relative legalities of RPF and FPF.

If I wrote a bunch of stories about you killing small animals and raping babies while smoking crack with Saddam Hussein and posted them all over the Internet, especially in forums where people dislike you, would that be ok?

Is that a trick question?

Dear Anti-RPS crowd,

Despite the fact that you're not likely to change my mind, come up with a new argument against RPS and we'll talk. Until then?

I wonder how these people feel about SNL/South Park/etc. who write, basically, parody fanfiction about celebrities.
