Mini R. A. Salvatore Wank?
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Please be gentle. < /clicheintroduction >

It's amazing what you can find when you aren't looking for it. I had just joined the forgotten_realms community over on LJ, and the very first post I see is someone bragging about being a troll. This instantly sends up my possible wank flags, so I toddle over to the message board they linked to and investigate. What I found was small, but amusing. Well... it made me giggle and roll my eyes, at any rate.

Vestele posts a thread essentially complaining about Salvatore's tendency to repeat certain phrases (which is a valid complaint, if you ask me >.<). Silvae replies with what amounts to an agreement and "you ain't seen nothin' yet".

This prompts efmd, a self-proclaimed friend of Salvatore, to post and whine at Silvae because apparently "everything you post in here is an attack on R.A. Salvatore." He then pulls the old "internet psychologist trick" -- "Does is make you feel better about your OWN writing?" -- and proceeds to shoot himself in the foot -- "Does it make you feel superior to the people here who are actually stupid enough to enjoy his books?"

Silvae comes back with a dissection of efmd's post and pokes fun at his typos. The two go back and forth at each other for a few posts, interspersed with some people actually responding to the original thread and even a plea from the OP to take the mini-squabble elsewhere. It seems to get cut off when the board's admin, Laethyn, pops up and essentially tells everybody to STFU.

I dunno... This might even be too small to qualify as real wank, but I was just impressed at how much of the characteristics of wank (internet psychologists, trolling, subtle and not-so-subtle "OMG dun critsize teh masta!" posts) they managed to pack into just a few posts.

efmd - "I just continue to wonder what the point of your continual criticisms might be. "

~_~ I didn't read his criticism, but constructive criticism is often welcome, nay?

Anyway, Doesn't seem to be to small.. efmd makes ""OMG dun critsize teh masta!"" bold. Smallie & Goodie

This person has chibi-Death-of-the-Endless as her user icon. It makes me angry to see that. Death isn't a jackass.

I realize the above made no sense, but at least now you know this post isn't being ignored.

Actually, reading Salvatore makes me feel much better about my own writing. If he can get Drizzty Sue published, I figure there's hope for me yet.

In a way, I can almost feel sorry for him. He tried to do something different by having Wulfgar react like a real person would after being tgrapped in the Nine Hells for six years, and the fanboys gave _Spine of the World_ a giant raspberry.

So he's back to writing the uberwunderkind Drizzt. Who, I hear, finally got laid.

What my beta said to me is this: "Reading Salvatore should mess up your ability to judge your own writing. Because even the dictionary looks like entrancing fiction next to his books."

Hee~ I've visited that board.
The thread I assume your talking about here, that drew your attention to it:

0.O;

He's a lazy writer? Um yeah. Sure. That explains, why so many books....

http://p197.ezboard.com/frasalvatoreforumsfrm1.showMessage?topicID=15.topic

Thats just his Dritz books, I know he's written more.

*shrugs* Dritz is a bit "perfect" at times, but the stories are still fun to read, and if your not a fan, why go and visit a board based on the fandom for that?

*blinks* Silvae, from the limited I saw before, was constantly whinging (enough to stick in my mind) and it is a bit off putting. ~.~;

He IS a lazy writer. Lazy in the sense he takes the easy way out: nothing bad will ever permanently happen to those characters. Ever. Everything must be Just Fine by the end of the story.

I've seen reruns with more suspense.

Need a new character? Quick, pop in a few cliches! Dwarves are comic relief, halflings live to eat, drow _must_ be Evil Incarnate, etc.

And if he milks the 'symbolism of opposites' between Drizzt and Artemis Entreri anymore he could take over Wisconsin's cheese industry.

Not that it necessarily applies in this case, but... Being a fan of something doesn't mean that one has to love that something entirely and all the time, you know.

You know, I have a sinking feeling that was sarcasm, but it makes total sense to me without it.

Yes, he's a lazy writer and he does a crap job, enabling him to pump out books rapidly as opposed to spending any time on them and, you know... making them not awful.

the stories are still fun to read,

Actually they make me want to claw my eyes out. But that's why I don't read them.

Oh god word word word so much word.

I got about a chapter into one of his books and then burst into the living room shrieking at my mother and brother (who had read and enjoyed it) about how the writing was appalling and stilted and if you're going to refer to a character as 'the drow' or whatever all damn day WHY GIVE HIM A NAME? WHY BOTHER?

I sincerely do not think I have ever read anything WORSE. (This may or may not be due to my failure to read The Eye of Aragon.)

Does is make you feel better about your OWN writing?

Because lord knows we can't ever just make criticisms on something based on the fact that we actually HAVE valid complaints and questions. It's always "OMG ur JELOUZ."

He wrote the kick-off book to the New Jedi Order continuity in Star Wars. I don't remember a thing that happened in that book besides the much-hyped Death of a Beloved Supporting Character. From this I conclude that he must be mediocrity incarnate, since I even remember the plots to piles of crap like The Crystal Star that I only ever read once.

Then again, I also like Merry Gentry. Perhaps we can sit over here in the Corner of No Taste.
