Roleplaying and Children...
[Damn...closed the wrong window, and lost my original attempt at posting this. *curses quick-fingers*]

...or won't someone think of the Roleplayers?

It all started innocently enough, with [info]halloweenboy asking in Roleplayers...

This is a gaming issue that I don't see mentioned at all. My wife and I both rp and I know here in St. Louis there are a few other couples with kids. Since we hold most of our games in our house we don't usually get a babysitter but I have been invited to play in other games and my wife would like to join me but we don't have easy access to a babysitter and I would not think that it would be polite to bring the little one along. Does anyone else have this issue or is this a very rare issue? Just kind of a brainstorming issue...

First comment, the [info]cf_hardcore people strike! [info]blacktigr brings out the child-beating bat with this...

I've only been in one game where there were children in the place. The group never got anywhere. And if you're that couple that never gets a babysitter and has them running around the table...I hate you.

Get a babysitter. One day a week. It shouldn't be that hard.

And it's off! So much so, that the original poster EDITS his post to include this:

EDIT: I would prefer answers from regular people, no members of [info]cf_hardcore who seem to have an agenda to spread...thanks

Which sets [info]blacktigr off again, as she is unhappy with the edit.

I'm personally amused by the people who keep talking about their gaming being SERIOUS BUSINESS and that they'd never bring a child along to a WHITE WOLF game. ADULTS ONLY OMG.

I've played White Wolf games. Maybe I just was never so OMG HARDCORE into the silly (inconsistent) world WW keeps creating.

Well, it wouldn't be polite to bring the kid along without asking first, whether or not it's a game. An invitation to you is not an invitation to your entire family.

This does not in any way lessen the need for the CFers to shove it, however. Quit making my barren loins look bad!

Right now, I'm thinking, Kudos to halloweenboy for remaining calm and rational in his response to the editwank. Had it been me in his place, I'm sure I would have lost it, told blacktigr exactly where she could stick her opinions, been banned from the community...in other words, gotten myself into a real mess. Needless to say, I'm glad it wasn't me...and I'm glad there are a few sane folks even in the middle of the shouting.

I once bought a 3rd edition of WW Changeling: The Dreaming. The dice system gave me a headache but I kept it because the pictures are pretty and the desk shots in the intro are fascinating.

Sure, taking the kid along without permission would be rude. The OP acknowledged that and was asking for other ideas.

Not to mention that I doubt having a decently-behaved kid around would be any more distracting than having a non-playing GM's-girlfriend around, or having one of the players writing a paper at the same time, or having one of the players having a virulent stomach bug (all real things I've put up with during games) so blacktigr can really just shove it.

(I'm sorry, despite White Wolf's best efforts, roleplaying is still just Not Serious Business. Even LARPing. Especially LARPing that involves coats with buckles.)

I was in a game last year where one of the players brought her five year-old daughter to every game. It would have been fine because she was in a different room but the kid was severely ADD and wanted her toy/game/movie changed every five minutes, meaning if we were in a combat scene we had to sit around and wait until Mommy could take her turn.

Also, why do we have a grudge against [info]cf_hardcore??

I don't go to other houses for games, mainly because I'm usually the DM, but my two small men have been known to be outright nusiances. Someone does need to keep them entertained, if nothing else.

That said, last weekend I DM'd a game in the dining room while the Long Suffering Hubby DM'd a game for the boys in their bedroom. I can't say who had more fun but I can say that the boys were quite noisy in their enjoyment.

*looks forward to the day when small men can join the big people's game.*

Obviously, no one who has been crass enough to reproduce should be allowed out in public, much less allowed to mingle with serious gamers. What are those breeders doing with hobbies anyway?

See, I'm fine with kids being around when I RP as long as they're quiet and well-behaved and as long as their parents are fine with them being exposed to a, um, wider variety of words and discussion topics than they might be used to at home. I can bring myself down to PG when I MUSH, because there's time to think things over, and when I'm at family gatherings/work, because I have to; in my leisure time, I want to be able to say "fuck" a lot.

I'm childfree. I don't like most children and I don't know what to do with the little creatures when they're around. However, a dear friend of mine is also the mother of a one-year-old, and we LARP together. Permission to bring the baby hasn't been an issue because her husband is a narrator, plus the baby is pseudo-in game. The kid just toddles around smiling at everyone, and (it being a Werewolf / mixed changers game) we all just say, 'Aww, lookit the kitten' and leave it at that. She's safe enough; her mother's character was recently raised to the position of Denmother, so she can watch the kid in and out of game.
Tiny kids have high maintenance requirements. I can see how it would distract a lot from a tabletop game. In a largeish LARP, on the other hand, it's much less of a problem.

Also, being a wee geeklet, the child's third word is 'brains'. We were talking about zombies before game got going two weeks ago, and she toddled up, clutched someone's pantleg, and uttered 'brains' in this tiny little chirp. We now keep her around for humor value.

Considering that the one White Wolf game I ever saw (I sat in on it for a bit but didn't play) involved a car possessed by the spirit of a teenaged girl which only liked bad pop music and had a shitfit (and stopped working) if you didn't play it on the radio... well. RPer. Long time. But I don't do WW. We stick to AD&D/Rifts when we game.

Now, when we get together to game, since we all have kids, it isn't a big deal. The eldest kids are too cool to geek with us14 and 16. The youngest ones are 1 month and 6 months. So, we don't really have this problem with kids interfereing, etc.

But geez... Ask a simple question and get reemed. I think someone needs to go take their sedatives and step away from the computer. Geez....

It does rather seem like "How would people who've been in this situation suggest I handle it" got interpreted as "what are your feelings on the mixing of children and games, ever." Which is not to say that there's no crossover, but "CHILDREN + GAMING = BAD" is not the same as, "Well, I think kids are kind of distracting - mine/my friends' were - and so I'd recommend getting a babysitter."

Reason number three for being child-free:
I'll never get bored because there ALWAYS will be wank. And it will be everywhere. Not only in child-free communities, but everywhere where child-free people are. All over the world. And it will only stop if children and breeders stop existing and that probably won't ever happen. :D

Blacktigr: I've been a gamer since before my teens,

So. Since you were a CHILD, then?

There's always one of those rabid CFers hidden, waiting for the mere mention of an ankle-biter so they can jump out of the shadows and berate people for having the nerve to procreate, isn't there? I like the part where she couldn't grasp the fact that she was out in loonyland and wasn't even coming close to answering the original question. I could have followed that question easily... when I was a child!

That said, twillits wins for the "[i]Duct tape works wonders[/i]" comment.

I was going along, happily amused at the whole wank (particularly the people with no kids telling us parents how life with kids should work), until

"Actually having dealt with CF members for about 10 years now I find the average member of a CF community to be someone who finds the very existance of children within 150 feet of them to be a violation of their rights."

I really hope they mean CF comm members, because otherwise HUH? Because I've had childfree friends for a bloody long time, and the whole childhating parent-dissing vibe on the comms is the exception. No really, it is.

I'm afraid I came away thinking nearly every poster ought to have spent less time in high school gaming and more time paying attention in English class. Ouch.

Actually, now that I recall, I run a game where a CFer got mad at me for letting characters decide to have a child. The person wasn't really involved in that plot, as they were two bad guys and the CFer played a good guy, but they still threw an absolute hissy.

Wacky fun.
