Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
My very first time posting wank. *sniff* We haven't seen FMA wank for a couple of weeks. And incidentally, Sky_Dark was involved in that one as well.

The Facts:

Ameru posted fanart on fm_alchemist a few months ago. Sky_dark left a compliment. Last week, Sky_dark offers up her soul posted some icons in her icon journal using Ameru's fanart as the base for numbers 21 and 28 without offering any kind of credit or acknowledgment of the artist. Those two icons were quite popular.

Bushbaby_sama, a friend of the artist, writes an open letter to "sky_dark, icon makers who use fanart, and art theives," calling sky_dark out about the use of fanart in her icons. Ameru takes her art down.

Sky_dark shows up and essentially says that 'fanart is a copyright violation, the artist didn't ask permission before she drew the pictures, why should I?' And she never lifted a hand against anyone, so of course the artist isn't hurt by anything she did.

Some Highlights:

Kaitou Marina wants to know why sky_dark's friends (Hime1999) are worth asking permission, but no one else is. The answer makes no logical sense.

In another comment, Sky is more explicit. "Hime gets support because she is a visible and active member of the LJ community. She is accessible. It's a double standard, that's just how it is." Well, that makes it okay. I'm glad she explained that for me.

Others pipe in. They, too, make no sense. She's not the only one using stolen artwork! And besides, artists who draw fanart are violating copyright. How dare that girl want credit for something she drew?

I wonder what would happen if someone plagiarized sky_dark?

And Sky-dark posts a rebuttal in her own journal. Responses are varied, but mostly some version of 'she posted her art on the internet, how dare she get upset when someone uses it' and 'ZOMG!! Sky is NOT rude! That girl had it coming!'

ETA: Removed some erroneous assumptions of allegiance.

I pay for the use of my manga, my scans, etc-- things I BUY and therefore gain the rights to use-- as I see fit.

Hee. I bought all three Extended Editions of LOTR. Therefore, I have the right to photoshop Orlando Bloom's head + wig on any body I want.

Woo!

I guess it's easier to be a douche on the internet than it is to just type in that little bit that acknowledges someone else's efforts. Unless they're a friend of that someone else, that is.

Also, just because something's a double standard doesn't make it any less a pile of bullshit. It's just bullshit of a different color because some asshole painted it red.

Must... NOT... go flip out about hot-button issue...

I really, really loathe art-thieves, and this is just a subset of that. How many damn keystrokes does it take for some credit or permission, people? That extra minute and a half really gonna break the bank for you? Are you contractually obligated to be an inconsiderate, self-righteous, egotistical prick? "Your fanart is totally a copyright violation so it's okay if I take it" my ASS. RAWR.

And the question of "a famous person in the fandom gets permission asked" is actually kind of surprising to me. I understand that in this case it's simply because she's justifying her behavior towards her friend vs. towards Ameru, but IME that's the reverse of the norm. Is this a new thing, or something I just haven't run across before?

Feel free, I don't own the copyright to any of the source material. I don't understand why everyone holds the rights of fanartists above the rights of the source material (i.e. Arakawa, Studio Bones and even Funimation).

You don't have all the facts, just [info]bushbaby_sama's version, who felt fit to make her post after the issued between [info]ameru and I had been solved, and had been solved for a couple of day

... She's already commented on how much she liked the art, how much harder would it be to tack on "can I use it for an icon?"

And I believe Ameru did give permission before bushbaby_sama wanked, don't quote me on that though.

I still don't understand why someone halfway intelligent would go to a community whose sole purpose is to mock others, and expect to have a reasonable argument with them. Come on, you know you'll get mocked no matter how valid your opinion is.

Eh, all I ask is that 'tapedeck' or 'lara hill' gets added to the keywords just so if someone likes the art on the icon, they can go back one or two steps and see the original in something larger than 100x100, and without 8pt george small-caps, Green Day lyrics and colour flares liberally decorated over the top of it*.

I find it interesting that the main reason fanartists put their artwork up on the net is to share, whilst the people in the wanktastic thread see that as offering something to steal. Methinks they make with the grabbyhands too much, or just don't fall anywhere within the artist/meta/writer hive-rainbow.

* Actually, let's talk about that. Someone likes the art so much in its base form, they then decide to add so much photoshop filter shit that the artwork can't be seen anymore. BRILLIANT!

Gee, how dare fanartists ask for the simple courtesy of asking for permission? The sheer nerve of them wanting to vaguely control how their work is distributed and used. BAH!

I love much of a trauma it is to edit a post to say "Sorry, I yanked __ and __ from ________ and forgot to credit them."

Amazing.

Alright. All you art thieves (yes, you qualify as such) need to go find the Ranting Gryphon's rant on art theft. Listen carefully. Now, go out an buy yourself a human soul.

I've never understood how someone could believe that the work a person puts hard effort and care into is there to be stolen. It would be funny if this girl was the only one, but alas, she's far from it.

...so, sky_dark = the [fan]artsy version of Cassie Claire, huh? She won't credit movie or TV show quotes fanart, since, yenno, everyone is just supposed to know where it's from, and isn't this such a pretty little free-for-all?

...so how come I didn't get the "fanartists are our slaves and will participate in all giant squid orgies" memo, again? *taps foot tail*
