Civilization 4 won't run on my under-spec system -- let's sue!
So it's not a typical subject for [info]fandom_wank</lj>, but I think it fits.

The newest version of the Civilization series of PC games, Civ IV, has just been released, and, shockhorror, it's not bug-free. Predictably, this has outraged the easily outraged the loyal fanbase.

So MrManganese decides that what is needed is a class action lawsuit.

It was a mildly amusing "righteous crusader versus the ass-kissing fanboys" thread for about the first page, but what put it over the top for me was the OP's comment from page 2:

"Those of you who think [this lawsuit is] silly might also have laughed at the Civil rights movement. You probably think Rosa Parks could have found a better way to get a front seat on a bus, or should have just learned to live with her low position in society.".

Yes folks, comparing one's fandom disappointments to the plight of black people is not just for Harmonians anymore!

Best response in the first couple of pages is from Defenestrator, who wants to sue Civ IV's manufacturer for his paper cut.

(The forums have a once-per-24-hours takeover ad upon first entering, but once in, it should be pop-up free.)

Hey, don't you laugh at them! Look at where social activism got the Everquest community... Once upon a time, they lived in a dark age in which people went to the phone or to the store for a pizza fix, tearing them away from their computers.

Now they have /pizza. Thank God Almighty, they are free at last.

Eeee, Tiesel Bonne.

Wait, are you serious? There's a slash command to order Pizza on Everquest?

Aww, some posts are replaced with things like this:
"Moderator Action: Look - If anyone continues to insist on debating the poster and not the topic, then I will simply delete your posts and you risk a ban. "

I want to know what that post said, me.

Okay, what is WITH people comparing their fandom issues to the civil rights movement? "My favorite pairing is officially fanon! WAAH!" or "My new computer game isn't totally bug-free! WAAH" does NOT equal "peaceful demonstrators getting blasted with high-pressure fire hoses" or "little girls getting blown up when their church is bombed," kthnx.

The OP (MrManganese), on Page 9 of the thread: By the way, after several hours of work, I finally got Civ4 working on one of my machines. I must've experienced half the bugs named on the tech support forum. I'm afraid I'll be too busy playing to attend to my class action lawsuit - someone else will have to take over.

Darn. So, no Mel Gibson-like figure on a horse, declaring that gamers need their freedom? No March on Washington? Not even a button to commemorate the fight for...

What were we fighting for, again?

Well, theoretically, if the bugs are so bad as to make the game unusable, part of the purpose of class actions is to hold corporations responsible for releasing shitty products by making it possible for people to bring claims it wouldn't be financially feasible to bring alone. So, say, for $10 bucks a person or something. The individuals involved wouldn't get any money to speak of (a few dollars or something), but it would pay court costs and attorney fees and the Cumulative amount serves as a disincentive to game manufacturers.

Of course, the game is probably fine and they're just being whiny.

If they think Civ is buggy, they should try out Sacred. THAT game put a whole new definition to "buggy."
I still love to play Sacred.

Also, under which rock do these people live that they do not now that games and other software hit the stores way before the developers have fixed every bug. That's what patches are for, dudes and dudettes.

Just think of the possibilities! I mean, I might wait a few days for a patch to come out... or return the game... I didn't think of the entertaining possibility of legal action! Or that companies producing imperfect products was tantamount to ZOMG oppression!

I'm totally going to be looking at the world a different way from now on.

much ♥ for Defenestrator...

And, yes, my fiance preordered the game and has been playing it constantly since it came out. He tells me I should play it, but I've never gotten over the fact that they removed the instant irrigation/instant road/instant mining bug from Civ I. Conquest! Conquest is all! My proudest moment: conquering the word in 100 B.C.
