Menus are serious business!
I have even more GameFAQs wank for you today, this time in the Dragon Quest VIII board.

Ashley Winchester makes a post saying he is "Disgusted by the North American Demo" because it has a graphical menu system and voice acting, and, therefore, the game will suck.

Wank about graphical menus, spell names, voice acting, UK Spelling, the validity of opinions, and GameFAQs user contributions follow.

68 replies in less than 12 hours. This one is gonna be huge.

I like graphical menus over just text menus, what's wrong with little icons? I heard that the original game didn't have voice acting in Japan, but Squeenix wanted to spruce it up for the US. I honestly would think that shows a company cares for its fans.

A simple solution would just be to turn down the volume, alas. *_* (Then again, I like voice acting, it adds more life to the characters.) And... is UK spelling bad? The world, she ends!

You don't even have to turn down the actual volume. There is an option to turn off the voices. So why there is so much wank about the voice acting, I don't know.

Its not twoo Japanese in all its beautiful form and language?
(I love dubs in Eng, Spanish, and Japanese, but sometimes it gets a bit out of hand with the fans. Yikes.)

Ah, I figured they might do that. I wasn't sure though, I know they do it for Tri-Ace games, but its been a while since I've seen a pure Enix game.

Tell me about it.

And remind me to never try defending dubs to TRUE ANIME FANS. They even refuse to accept that placing text over the screen changes the product as well as its perception.
DUBS ARE BAD! I mean, no one would notice that you are playing a FOREIGN game! You wouldn't appear half as intellectual.

In dub wars, no one ever wins. That's pretty much what I've seen.

This is such a brilliant comment. I want an icon of it. In fact, I may have to fire up the old girl right now!

You write a lot of words about your opinions, we get it. You made your point, we can drop it now.

"Yeah, we want to make things even MORE simplistic for you. No more guessing what the spells do, let's just make their names a literal indication."

Er, I happen to LIKE knowing what spells do before I cast them, or is that just me?

That was my thought. Man, he must have been really tired afterwards, stretching so much to wank off that hard.

You'll have to forgive him. He's from the time when the spell called "Inferno" created a tornado.

I am very glad I am not from that time. What did "Gale" create, a tsunami?

Well, MunchenGohan did say, "he likes to point out things that have been changed and then just calls them horrible. he doesn't realize that things have to go forward some time. he's continually stuck in the past, and unable to embrace any change in any game series whatsoever."

As for Ashley's posts, tl;dr.

So, in summary, 'Ol Knightblazer fears change, whores out his reviews, seems to be a bit confused about what "stupified" means, and is telling Enix that only 90% of the people who are going to buy DQ8 exist in our reality.

You know, it's guys like him that make the GameFAQs boards a mockery. It's annoying.

Here's a little secret: I "enjoy[ed] this great game" almost an entire year ago back when it was unedited and in its original language.

...So if he's already played it, and has access to a copy of the original version, he cares about the changes made to the NA version why?

Sorry, but I have to recommend that anyone who wants to play this game as it was INTENDED to be played do the "right" thing and import it.

It's my moral obligation to import a game in a language I don't understand?

Only if you want to play it the right way. Because it is vitally important that the menu not be interesting.

The way they "intend" us to play the game is one in which they get money for it. I'm not saying there can be no art in video games, but seriously folks. It's not like anyone's forcing Dante to tone down the Inferno because it's too depressing or something.

I'm against this often forced distinction between "art" and "commercial stuff".
When you think about it, all that Shakespeare did was earn his money. He had to please the masses, too. Granted, he did a good job with it, and deserves credit. That's exactly the point. Something can be made in order to gain money, and still deserve praise and discussion.
Rembrandt and those other painters. The Nightwatch? Art, you'd say? But it was an ordered work - he did it for money. Still art.
It doesn't matter.

I've talked to people who refused to accept that some element in a videogame might symbolise something or another. No, they said stubbornly, because videogames are made just to sell, they are not art. This stance is just stupid. It makes you so blind.

The purism of some fans is just as stupid, though.

Oddly enough it was those very things that made me adore the demo and pre-order the game.

If there has to be wank about Enix, DQ, and artistic integrity, it ought to be wank about their re-release of DQV for the PS2 and how a certain someone (spoilers!) apparently doesn't die in it.

Because I just learned about that, and dude.

But never mind me, I prefer my RPGs in 2D, anyway. (Not because of the loss of artistic integrity in fancy graphics, but because 3D gaming makes my head hurt.)

Hightlight for spoiler: Papas, as I hear, doesn't die.

Not sure if that's who you thought it was, but it beats me how they wrapped their plot around that one. Maybe it was a "Surprise! Not dead after all!" ending. I haven't played the re-release, of various reasons.

I find it amazing that more people haven't called him out on his self-righteous mantra designed to make himself look as important as possible within the DQ community. Lives in Japan? Speaks Japanese? Attended the screening? Mm, right, Ashley Winchester. That's what makes a true fan.

Okay, wait. This game has voice acting that can be turned off, but when it's there, it's by people with British accents? And now the spell names actually give you some inkling of what the spells do? THE HORROR. What other atrocities will this game commit? Will it bake me cookies in the night? Do my laundry? Transform into a shirtless slaveboy on command?
