Someone called wank early, so I'll rise to the occasion.

Over on [info]fanficrants, [info]ladybirdsleeps decides to make a Johnny Paycheck reference.

I've seen a lot of ranting about authors who will squeal in outrage if you so much as point out a typo. This rant is not about them. It's about their mirror images: the people who think their con-crit is a gift from God.

Look, twit -

You are not fulfilling a heavenly duty when you give con-crit. You are not going to save fandom. You are not going to save even one author's soul. What you're doing is giving advice, and if you're offended that some authors disagree or just don't want your advice, you need to remove your head from your ass, STAT.

There are a lot of reasons that someone might not want advice from strangers. Here are some I can think of off of the top of my head:

* The stories they're posting are old so most advice they would get would be outdated.

* They only want con-crit from trusted fellow writers or friends.

* The con-crit they've received in the past has not been helpful.

* They don't want to deal with your bruised ego if they don't follow your advice or dare to reply saying that they disagree.

If you're one of those people who are running around insulting authors just because they didn't take time out of their busy lives to rewrite a story you gave con-crit for or because they simply said in their author's notes that they don't want con-crit? You're the one with an ego problem, so STFU.

Responses vary, from wordpies to Furby overlords.

I hate unsolicited advice. Whenever I mention this, people tell me how they think I should deal with people who give me unsolicited advice.

It's a vicious, vicious circle, I tell you.

On one hand, people shouldn't bitch about people commenting (critically or not) on something they've posted to a public arena. On the other, I have seen a lot lot lot of people who act like writers should suck cock for being gifted concrit, so I can see where she's coming from.

I never understood the attitude that the internet was supposed to be some kind of massive writing workshop, that every fic was by default in progress and awaiting revision and that if you weren't posting specifically for constructive criticism, you shouldn't be posting at all.

Because when my stuff goes up, it's dead done dead. I no change no morrrrrrre. Unless I've made a minor mistake that needs correction, like misspelling Gandalf's name Poopiebeard or something like that.

Personally I think it was about time someone posted a rant saying why not everyone wants constructive crit.

I understand the viewpoint that if its on the net then people are going to post their opinion and its not going to be all good, but there are some morons who take a high and might attidude, misunderstand everyword you say and because its their opinion they must be right.

And those people give me the shits.

Also some authors I know, have moved on from their fic- its been 2 years so they don't care about it anymore. So their going to ignore it and the issue and if they write again they might consider it.

There is also the fact that its hard to accept revisions in spelling from someone who mixes up your and you're, there & their.

Oh, my. You don't need feedback except from your superbestest buddies who happen to be the superbestest writers and are the only ones who understand your genius? Don't read it! (Although it would be polite the state that your not interested in the readers opinions, before they waste their time with it.)

It's funny with Anne Rice, who doesn't need feedback from anyone but Jesus, but with fandom authors it is just annoying.

swear that "con-crit for everyone!" people seem to forget that there's a writing process at all. It's like the assumption is everything goes right from the author's brain to the internet. Those people do exist--but not everybody is one of them, and people need to stop basing all their judgments on what they've learned from them and start remembering that there isn't just one way to skin a cat.

Yeah except you kind of assume this is the final draft of the story unless they say so...

Am I the only one who write fanfic as a hobby? And thus do not spend as much effort on it as I would an original piece of work?> Or do I just fail to see that it is serious business.

*guilty* I admit I flipped my shit once on someone who got on my case for giving them "unwarranted" concrit, but that was mostly because she accused me of being ignorant and attempted to "educate" me.

These days, to be blatantly honest, I don't even bother. I leave commentary once in a blue moon, mostly because I feel guilty when I don't have anything constructive to add.

Huh. I only see that as wanky insofar as people taking fanfic as OMG SERIOUS BIZNEZ. I'm a con-criter, but I don't explode when an author decides to not follow my advice.

Case in point: I critiqued this one story that was fairly well-written except for the almost nonstop Otaku-ese -- ie, "Miiinaaaaaaaaaaa-saaaaaaaaaaaan!" instead of "Hey everyone!" -- yet decided that she didn't need to provide a glossary. Yeah, it was really damn annoying, but I simply wrote that "I really think you ought to consider leaving the random Japanese words out, since it disrupts the flow of your fic, or at least providing a glossary for those words if you really can't leave them out for personal taste reasons."

Her response was, "But I just love Nihongo too much! Besides, everyone knows all these words, anyway!" I headdesked like whoa, but one more Otaku-ese riddled fanfic does not the Apocalypse bring.

It's about time somebody put up the flipside. You'd think people could read. And learn about context.

Right off the block though, jensa_chan proves that theory and slight faith in humanity wrong.

Maybe a dash of sparkles, marquee and bold would have helped for the first paragraph, although it's definitely not an eyesight problem (judging from the number of people missing the barn for the fleas).

It's all about coke ads these days...

It occurs to me that if you're posting a drawing/story/artistic nude photograph on a public forum and you don't want any concrit, it would behoove you to say so when you post (unless the forum states explicitly in its rules that there is to be no criticism, constructive or otherwise). Of course on LJ you can just disable comments, which is handy. Not sure how it'd work on other types of websites. But it seems that the internet's "default mode" is "if something is posted in public, the public is invited to comment upon it".
That said, I don't read fanfic at all, and only give artistic concrit when I know the person I'm talking to a) wants it and b) will not have a hissy fit over it. (Some people SAY they want concrit, but...)

If you've gotten advice that you don't want to use, is it THAT hard to simply scroll over it?

Is it? I've gotten concrit I'm not going to use, but I simply nodded my head, thanked them for their time, and moved on. I didn't vow not to take advice from strangers ever again.

And if you just don't want it, then just say so. I've seen one artist say that she wanted specific advice from her teachers, so people didn't need to concrit. Compare that to another artist stuck up her nose, and said she didn't NEED advice from you stick-drawing plebes. Guess who I thought was the asshole? Yup.

I'm just looking at Here are some I can think of off of the top of my head: in that text and cringing over here. Yeah, I know, it's OMG UNSOLICITED. But it's still annoying, even if it's correct in Amerispeak.

I dunno, the few times I saw people actually say "no concrit, plz" in the header, their writing sucked, so. I consider "no concrit, plz" a "badfic warning" label. Based on my limited experiences. >:)

But in principle, I agree that people who think everyone should take their advice and their concrit is a gift from God should take their concrit and shove it, because no it ain't. I love concrit from strangers but it stops being constructive when the stranger is so invested in it they feel the need to force-feed it to me.
