BPAL Wank
Originally posted to [info]otf_wank and moved here after getting the go-ahead from [info]snacky.

It's been a while since we've had some good BPAL wank. This one is a doozy and very entertaining. Many of the posts are locked but the community is open to everyone, so just join if you want to read up on everything because I ain't copy-pasting all of this.

A few weeks ago on the BPAL community, a user named mizz_ann_thrope made several posts offering sales of a lot of hard-to-find scents, including single notes, which aren't sold by BPAL anymore, and discontinued and limited edition blends. A lot of people swooped in to snap up what she had to offer, to the tune of over $400 being sent to mizz_ann_thrope's Paypal account.

A few days later, mizz_ann_thrope deleted her sales posts. OH NOES! When one person posted to the community asking where the posts went, mizz_ann_thrope said she deleted them to keep her records organized and thought it was acceptable. She's told it's best to keep the posts up until all her sales have been received by the buyers and she apologizes, saying she won't do it again. And then she deletes her comments.

A couple of days after that, mizz_ann_thrope deletes her LJ. OH NOES!!! People start getting worried about the money they sent her and whether they'll ever get their perfumes. Worry turns into panic. Panic turns into a good old-fashioned witchhunt. The bilked members gather 'round to sleuth and find several sockpuppets: brambled and reinventedmuse They dig up multiple LJs, MySpace accounts and websites from mizz_ann_thrope and her many names. They even find her home address and phone number and one outraged sucker has her FBI pal call to scare the woman. Links for your perusal/enjoyment:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4

There's some more in other posts but that's most of the good stuff.

Sometime yesterday, after being confronted with her sockpuppetry, brambled deletes her LJ, then undeletes it and makes a post to the BPAL community not exactly denying that she is also mizz_ann_thrope but clearly painting herself as a victim. Everyone is unimpressed and demands their money back. A few hours later, she makes another post coming clean about her scam. Members swoop into the make screencaps in case brambled deletes her confession. As of now, that's where the whole thing stands.

Edited out the "my opinion" part because even if it's how I feel, nobody cares and everyone is just here for the wank.

Yes, I said that. But like I also said, the community is open to anyone so if you want to read the posts, friend the community and unfriend after you've read what you want to. It's way too much for me to copy-paste.

I dunno, it seems a little less than wanky to me. Half of hte people on the final post seem to be saying things like "it's okay, you're a good person, just give back the money please?" even people who are known to be wanky in the past.

Sad to see people be taken advantage of, though. I know people who trust their money on the internet to whomever, they drive me crazy with their huge purchases. If I had that much money to throw around (as some of my friends), I'd be a whole lot more careful where I put it.

Well, I think the scammer is being entertainingly wanky, what with going from 'I did nothing wrong why are you being meeeeeeeeeeen' to 'I'm sorry it was me I am a bad person... and you're all shit outta luck until I get a job! ... ... why are you being meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen'.

At any rate it's entertaining.

Huh. So am I the only person *on the entire planet* that does not "get" the obsessive devotion people have to BPAL? No, I don't want an imp of magical pumpkin leather. Yes, I UNDERSTAND how they are made so carefully. Yes, I UNDERSTAND how it smells different on everyone. Yes, I UNDERSTAND how hard it is to get them because it's zzzzzzzz. Wait, what?

Oh? I am the only person who feels this way? Mmmmkay! ::slinks off::

I like BPAL but I do agree the evangelism is often over the top. Good-smelling it may be, it's still perfume and it's not going to pay my bills, rake my yard, give me multiple orgasms and supply me with sushi every night for the rest of my life.

I don't get it either, but then again, I can't wear perfumes in general nor stand to be around people wearing too much of any becuase it triggers hideous migraines for me.

So out of control, aren't they, for wanting their money back for something that wasn't delivered, and trying to go through the proper authorities and/or try any available ways to contact the person who defrauded them.

What is the world coming to. Honestly.

She should have said that her house had been broken into and her laptop stolen. She'd have made a hell of a lot more money that way, and there wouldn't have been the threat of prosecution.

Man, am I glad I always forget to check into alchemy_lab, and the posts move too fast to do anything about it. I would have totally fallen for that Single Note lie.

Meanwhile, I'm glad that her massive post apologizes for, among others, "spelling and grammar errors", however, I'm trying to figure out how an unemployed deadbeat could get enough money together to have BPAL.

I've been watching this for a while, kudos to [info]telophase for digging up the sordid truth. A lot of people were freaking out when they realized they had lost their money to [info]mizz_ann_thrope, and as stated somewhere in the posts, she was posting things that she knew BPAL fans would want. So sympathy is not exactly pouring out from my heart towards "Oh poor little me, I swindled a large group of people for $xxx."

How much would all of that amount to anyways? It was $10-17 US for an imp? She made a tidy sum out of all that. So, again no sympathy for her.

Also, I am shameful, but... has anyone tried Hetairae or Brisingamen? As I now have a job, I was thinking of putting away some money towards some bottles.

I've seen BPAL up here before and glanced at it then. But now, I'm almost out of my usual cologne and some of these scents seem intriguing.

So, is there anyone who wants to give a guy who usually wears Drakkar Noir a nudge towards a new scent? Because I realise they're marketed towards women mostly, but I really don't care, so long as I smell nice.

I think [info]mizz_ann_thrope needs to retake the class Fraud 101: How to scam people and not make yourself look guilty through lame attempts to hide the evidence.

There's also a big unlocked apology post from the swindler here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/bpalmarketplace/198238.html#cutid1.

I was an early adopter of BPAL, I think, back when it didn't take 2 months to get an order, and I still order on a semi-regular basis. It's good stuff, it isn't too expensive, and it lasts forever. But I absolutely don't understand the evangelism, or the whole "it's the preciousssss!" thing. It's... oil. It smells nice.

Why does this sound so familiar?

Wasn't there someone in the BPAL/Alchemylabs circle who did this exact same thing with scamming out money, deleting most of the records and pulled the sockpuppetry to try and clear out the bad word. I vaguely remember that one having an American Indian sounding ID with her assorted other ones.
