Fear the Jane Austen fans!
I was going to post this over at [info]fandom_lounge, but some of the comments contained in this story are so wanky that I decided to drop it here instead.

NPR's Morning Edition ran a story about the new Pride and Prejudice film, specifically about the reaction of the Jane Austen Society, who got a sneak peek before the movie's official opening today.

As we learn in the story, several fans are not too pleased with the new film, in the nitpickiest of ways. Keira Knightley's "carriage" does not befit a Regency lady, for instance. Darcy is "too sulky". The hair was unspeakably messy throughout. Etc. Much of it has the sound of fandom poker (i.e. I Know More About This Than You Do, So There). Highly amusing.

I haven't scanned the Pemberley boards for commentary yet, although here's a link if anyone feels like poking around.

(I love Jane Austen's books, but I can't work up an obsession for them like that. Or for much of anything, which is why I suppose so much of my involvement in fandom in general is limited to bemused observation.)

(Edited to change a pronoun with an unclear antecedent.)

I was supposed to see this movie as a class assignment for my 19th-century women course. Thank God it fell through -- my prof's the same nitpicky type. I like trashy adapations, though. :D

Oh, bollocks to that. They just want pretty white clean dresses and nicely curled hair and everything all pretty and shiny and just so.

The new film was good because it was real, more in the time-bracket of the book, all muddy yards and animals and dresses that didn't cost a bomb etc etc. That's what it's supposed to be. It's always the same; people get their knickers in a twist because they've gotten used to the old versions and don't like anyone to change their pretty little world.

Bunch of whiny 'purists'.

FYI, I prefer the new Darcy.

the carriage comment is rather ironic since "pride and prejudice" was written in 1797, in other words the georgian period. it was then published in 1813, which is considered regency.

"who got a sneak peek before the movie's official opening today."

*frowns* Opened today? Last time I checked, it was in cinemas over here a month ago or something.

Wait. WAIT. Did the Netherlands FINALLY get an international movie before the US? HAHAHAHA!

Okay, it doesn't make up for the fact that I had to wait FOUR MONTHS for Hitchhiker's Guide and am STILL waiting for Serenity, but I will be mocking the US Austen fans. Haha! I mock you! I mock you ALL!

And from what I've seen in the trailers, it looked they were doing Wuthering Heights to me. I mean, all the brooding in moors and fields and looking forlorn.

And as for nitpicking, the only factual thing I saw in the trailer that was completely wrong was when the butler introduced the Bennett ladies. He announces them as "Miss Bennett, Miss Bennett, Miss Bennett and Miss Bennett" when only the oldest daughter would've been Miss Bennett. The rest would've been Miss (enter first name here).

Seriously, I can't blame the Jane Austen folks for nitpicking. All fans of books which then get turned into movies do it.

I heard that this morning, and I found it hilarious. Kera Knightly's too "pouty" and "slouchy"? Geez, they should be happy they got a good actress. The dresses aren't just right? I'm crying for you. The hair just isn't perfect! Oh, no! They ruined the book for you by presenting an image that you just can't reconcile with your clearly feeble imagination!

At least they didn't totally screw the plot over, coughIndianintheCupboardcough.

Oh, for the love of...

Seriously: they should've known better.

I'm an Austen fan, yeah, but I'm not the type who'd get on with their ilk. That said, I have absolutely no intention of seeing this movie, ever. Having read P&P several times over, and having taught it to college freshmen and sophomores, I was able to tell by the trailer that I didn't want to see it.

For the record, my reasons have nothing to do with costumes or props, but for the sheer fact that you can't cram Pride and Prejudice into 127 minutes without skimping and glossing and cutting corners. This strikes me as the sort of flick my students would see in order to get out of reading the book. (Don't laugh; I've had students watch "O" instead of reading Othello.) The BBC miniseries reaches about four hours, bathroom breaks included, and it's the most faithful period adaptation I've seen yet. (Someone mentioned that Firth's Darcy was "cardboard," and I personally disagree, but whatever. Darcy's supposed to be a pompous, arrogant ass; IMO Firth carried it off well.)

I do think it's kind of funny that the fans are being called "unimaginative" for getting pissy about the details. I save my energy to get pissy about the crappy modern-day adaptations (not including Bride and Prejudice). While it does seem like a lot of "I know more about it than you do!" posturing, I think the same thing would be going on if one of the Harry Potter films took wild liberties with the book.

But seriously -- two hours? For P&P? *shakes head* They should've known better.

Meh. David Edelstein gave it a good review and no one's put a curse on Roger Ebert's colin yet, so it can't be that bad.

There's more complaining going on at The DWG.

I think my favourite bit about this whole thing is "Kiera Knightleys bosoms aren't large enough for her to play Elizabeth."

I can't wait for the day they cast a (shock, horror) blond actor as Darcy, and let him stay blond.

When it first opened over here, Radio Four had some woman from the Jane Austin society on, whose name I've completely forgotten, complaining about how absolutely awful the film was, a travesty, etc.

I heard her again on R4 very shortly afterwards, on 'Front Row' (arts programme). She rather sheepishly admitted that when she made the first set of remarks, she hadn't actually, you know, *seen* the film. Since then she had, and, um...it was quite good actually, and she'd really enjoyed it.

At least she had the grace to admit it, and I thought it was very nice of the presenter not to laugh in her face.

p.s. If anyone's interested, I've seen it, and I also really enjoyed it, and found it was a very interesting, thoughtful adaptation.

I heard this while driving to work this morning, and was WTFing all over the road. Especially at the 'Jane Austen's work is SACRED!!11' comment. Forgive me, but wasn't her work considered lite reading back then? Sacred my ass.

Just sayin, that for me?

The best Darcy evah!!11!! was David Rintoul in the 1980 BBC version. Which is also (at least until I see the new one tomorrow) my favorite film adaptation.

I've *very* skeptical of open shirted Darcy wandering around in the mist.....but then, I didn't care for Colin's swiming adventure either!

(For the record? I totally love the recent Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion film adaptations - the the last is probably my favorite film and favorite Austen novel....).

I'll be watching it, enjoying it for what it is, and not-so-secretly laughing at those who are indignant and then refuse to see the movie. Dude, that's a harsh life.

The funniest and most cringe-worthy part of the movie was when Mr Darcy and Elizabeth were wandering around a field in the early hours of the morning for something like ten minutes, before they conveniently ran into each other.

My guess is that it was supposed to rival the scene in the BBC version where Mr Darcy goes for a swim, then runs into Elizabeth while wearing a wet shirt. It didn't work though, everyone in the movie laughed instead of drooled :P

Incidentally, I didn't like the movie much, myself. The good cast, costumes, locations, and the realistic lack of neatness was let down by poor dialogue and a weird tendency to transplant most scenes to a new setting.

I might see it, but then again, though I don't really care much for Keira Knightley's acting in general, I'm interested in P&P to just see it.

That said, I love the BBC version. Whoever played Lizzie was my hero T.T

I just got back from seeing the new movie, and actually, I really, really liked the dialogue. A lot of it is changed--but I liked that, because the BBC version was just transplanted dialogue moved over to film, so I could practically recite along, while the new version was constantly surprising me. The weakest scene (IMO) in the new movie, where Elizabeth and Caroline take a walk around the Netherfield drawing room, is the most true to the book and the most contrived.

It does have a lot of little moments I didn't expect at all--like a Mary who wasn't odious and pompous 24/7, or a Charlotte with some passion. The supporting actresses were so perfect (actors, too--Wickham was great).

I myself liked the change in costuming--really, when you've seen one white Regency gown, you've seen them all, while the mishmash you get in 1797 is a lot more interesting and fun.

It did go right back to the drawing board, to try to tell Elizabeth and Darcy's story in a film media, rather than directly transferring the novel--but I don't think it suffers for it at all.

Tangentally related, but I think that this RPG idea would be a fine place for Jane Austen's books to go next.
