Fanficrants is at it again...
Today [info]nessie_cakes posts that she's tired of people using OMG!BIGWERDS in their fanfiction.

S/h/it claims that if you have a decent vocabulary "It makes you look kinda like a bitch."

Fanficrants does the usual and explodes/implodes/whatever.

Only up to 50+ responses but growing quickly.

EDIT:

What makes me giggle as that she says, "I don't know what Trigun urple is" and I think she thinks that urple is part of the title. XDDD

Nessie_cakes has obviously read Veela Charm and the Dark-Haired Man, a fic famous for spelling words like 'vociferated' correctly, but words like 'blue' or 'beautiful' incorrectly.

That fic is the best.

*puzzledly* Is she wanking about the people who misuse words or is she wanking about the people who have more than an eighth-grade vocabulary or do I just need to get drunk?

If she's complaining about the people who have more than an eighth grade vocabulary I have zero sympathy and the information that Google has a goddamn dictionary function. And she can use it.

If she's wanking about people who MISuse words I feel her pain and really, the only thing to do is insinuate yourself into their lives until you can be their beta and suggest nicely they could maybe look up that word.

Somewhat on the topic, what drives me nuts is people who insist you spoonfeed them every bit of plot in a fic. I swear to God I finished up my Big Gay Story and people on ffnet were leaving reviews complaining that it wasn't a shipping fic. Because, and this made me vomit a little in my mouth, because there was no kissyface snugglins buttsecks. Whereupon I went off and got drunk in lieu of biting their heads off.

I like how she fails to use a reflexive pronoun where it would be grammatically correct, and misspells "audience." I salute her for practicing what she preaches, in a sense.

I actually agree in some situations (though not the one they're talking about)-- using words that are so unknown that you actually have to put a glossary in the fic itself chapter after chapter, for instance. You COULD let your readers understand, but instead abuse the thesaurus.

I can sympathize, to an extent. I have run across a few thesaurus-thumpers who refuse to use a simpler word just 'cause they look smarter if they use a longer one. Had a teacher like that, once, actually, a P.E. coach who got shunted into social studies 'cause he sucked that bad who told us to "secure a computer terminal" when in the lab.

Nessie_cakes sure does come off as an ass, though.

People, it's fanfiction, not LYFE!!!1!!1!1111!!

And in other news, has thesaurus.com's server gone down from misuse by the pretentious, bitchy fic authors yet? 'cos we all know MSWord's thesaurus just kinda sucks.

Sorry, sorry, huge geek, but:

That wacky clara_19, who also crits. people for using big words to make themselves look smart, throws in the word, connotates, spells it wrong, and then posts a correction, here (I'd do the linky thing but I don't know how):

http://www.livejournal.com/community/fanficrants/1428524.html?thread=42719276#t42719276

Yeah, the verb form of connotation is, as far as I and the dictionary know,...connote.

I love it when people over-complexify.

Sorry, it was driving me crazy and I couldn't tell anyone I know because I want to, you know, keep my real life friends and not scare them that I got way excited over a very small grammatical error.

I'm curious that no-one has addressed nessie_cakes' ham-handed suggestion that fandom in general is too dull-witted to grasp so simple a concept as context.

I'm rather certain I learned in grammar school how to use context clues for aid in identifying unfamiliar vocabulary.

I somewhat understand what the OP means. When you story and the authors has an average vocabulary then out of nowhere comes a "more expect" word, it can throw off the readers.

I was reading a book by Michel Tremblay and his vocabulary was a little bit above average then there was that one word that was more "expect", and it threw me off. I didnt mind stopping to look up the word, but I still had lost the flow of the story.

But, I dont agree with the fact that it makes them bitch, that was over the top.

Dear nessie_cakes,

I agree that incorrectly used words are an eyesore. However, if a word is being used correctly, and effectively achieves whatever it was that the author was trying to achieve, then what exactly is your problem? Vocabulary isn't like an RPG. There aren't cutoff points for certain skills. Either you know how to use a word, or you don't.

Oh, and here I thought she was commenting on the idea that a character whose vocabulary is otherwise simple shouldn't suddenly be breaking out the sesquipedalian terms.

Mark Twain expresses it (and other writing problems) cruelly and neatly in The Literary Offenses of James Fenimore Cooper. (http://etext.virginia.edu/railton/projects/rissetto/offense.html) (Rule 7 was what I had in mind)

She has something of a point - an author who can't consistently use multi-syllabic words without breaking the flow of the story can be irritating. However, that's part of developing skill and style. I know I'm much better now at sentence flow than I was three years ago.

Too bad she was too wanky to make a good point.

I'm really not seeing the wank in this one... seems mostly like civil discussion to me.

(And for the record, I agree wholeheartedly on the usage of big words for big words' sake. If you can use it properly and integrate it into the narrative without being jarring, more props to you. However, if you're just throwing it in to show off that you know a big word... you fail.)

I'm surprised this made it to FW and not the big blond verse blonde debacle.

Spacebabie.

I'm sorry, you posted using the word "vocabulary", which is way too big for the people of this community. You're gonna have to tone it down before the bitch police come and arrest you.

For crying out loud.....

Is anyone else concerned by the fact that acquiesced is considered a "vocab" word?

I would have wanked, but I know too many vocabulary words to be able to say much more than: OMG! WTF!?

For some reason, I can't help but imagine the OP saying as much about Warrior's website...

Dear OP,
please don't try ranting about vocabulary or the use of big words to make you appear intelligent. Thank you.

No love,
Mazo

PS: This rant fails to impress me. It only serves to make you look like a bitch.
