More stuff to keep an eye out for.
We don't have a wank here just yet, but:

Ladies and gentlemen, there are two communities on LJ dedicated to gather Mary Sue authors together and chat.

Watch as the Mary Sue Report finds out about their existence, and are already starting to get their feathers a bit ruffled (Because HOW DARE those EVIL badfic authors make a place where they can meet and have fun just like the MSR is a gathering of people that mock them?) and start to lace up their boxing gloves. Only one person in the whole thing thus far brings up the possibility of parody.

I more than know that most of it is obviously tongue-in-cheek commentary (Loved the "Hey, now we don't have to search for them because they're all in one handy source!" comments, heh...), but as someone who belongs to the comm and reads it daily (and thus knows the behavioral trends of a few folks), I can't help but get this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that one or two might actually be serious in their reactions. And it's from these particular types of folks that I'm expecting wank to roll in about five... four... three...

No, those two new communities are pretty fucking scary. They don't FEEL like parody -- or if they are, they're so subtle that the morons joining 'em don't get it. Eek. I actually agree with the MSR people: KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT ARRRRGHHHHH

x.x Eh.. I'll be in the minority here, and while I dislike the MS/self-insert as much as the next self-respecting fan, I will say that just looking at it objectively, I can see where you're feeling the wank, Rora-sama.

I feel there is a certain 'elitist' sense in some comments in that it's not so much the fact that there are Mary Sues but that they made a community for it. (And OMGWTFBBQQqqq there's a community for 'Mary Sue Support' too!1111 but there can't be one for those damned Mary Sues! CURSE YOU MARY SUE!1111@#$4)

Well la-de-dah. MS exists, life goes on and people continue to gouge their eyes out. One can just hope that they grow out of it and most do; let them have a community and fellate each other for the time being, that's my vote and I'm sticking it in the ballot! Vote Independent!

If I wanted to be snarky, one could say at least then they don't have to troll wander fanfiction.net mailing lists elsewhere to find support for their extremely painful fics.

No, I'm not abusing the strike tag.

Anyone notice that in the marysue_me community the vast majority of the posts have none (or one or two) comments? Doesn't seem like even the members are that interested in their own marysueness.

But both those journals do reek heavily of parody--however, what happens when the real, sincere MS authors find them and start pissing over cyberspace more than they already do?

I believe the answer is: They'll do exactly the same thing as the real anti-het folks will do whenever the "Anti-Het community" someone here made takes off the ground.

I used to totally enjoy MS Report. I still do, just much less so. It's just that there are so many members that seem to forget that it's moreso for TEH FUNY than JIHAD!!!!111!!!!1

So your fandom got Sue'd. Big deal, so did everything else. Even the quickest search of the internet reveals that the only fandoms that don't have Mary Sues or Marty Stus are the ones that are non-existant on the internet and/or in offline "zine" culture. It's annoying, but it won't kill you. Just file a report and deal with it with a mix of humour and tongue-in-cheek commentary, why don't you?

In any case, to paraphrase (i.e. bastardize) Voltaire "I may disagree with your fandom, but I defend to the death your right to have it". Besides, imagine the grudgematches that will ensue between the two communities!

Even Captain N has a ton of Mary Sues. Captain N fandom on the net consists of probably about 100 people at most, and 90 of them are probably Mary Sues/Marty Stus/Blue's Clues/Doctor Whos/Could you would you on a bus?

Well, Captain N Mary Stus are oddly fitting in a way, since Captain N is a show ABOUT a Marty Stu character. Only, you know, turned canon.

Bleh. I remember when MSR was fun and funny all the time..now so much of it just seems bitter, and some posters seem to have made it their personal crusade to stamp out Mary Sues.

Dude, chill. Mary Sues happen everywhere. Your fandom isn't unique. I know it sucks to have your favorite characters turned completely OOC just so some too perfect character can hook up with them, but, not much you can do about it. So have fun pointing and laughing, but for God's sake don't make yourself neurotic about things. Where's the fun in that?

Let the Mary Sues have their community. Why should anyone care, yeesh. You play in your sandbox and let them play in theirs.

I remember when MSR...

Oh god, I just read that as Mulder/Scully Romance, and I found myself nodding and thinking, "Yeah, I remember when I liked MSR, too." I guess it's true: you never truly leave your first fandom.

now so much of it just seems bitter, and some posters seem to have made it their personal crusade to stamp out Mary Sues

Uh huh. And, what's worse, a lot of commentors take the opportunity go on about how, "Well, *I* have OCs, but *they* aren't Mary Sues, because *I* do blahblahblahgreatestriterevacakes!" Or at least they used to, back before I stopped reading the community. That and the sudden decision that every single character, canon or non, with some sort of special power or good looks is a Mary Sue made me decide to kick it off my friends list. Somewhere along the line, the snark got traded for rage. I miss the snark.

I also love the pretentiousness of the opinion a few of them seem to have about how even the worst of slash is somehow inherently better than any Mary Sue.

Umm... explain Marty Stu slash, then. It's out there - I distinctly recall a VERY popular Gourry x Zelgadis fic that also had a male OC (from one of the author's "original roleplaying worlds") x Zel, and it was painfully, PAINFULLY a Stu. (Also kinda Stu-ified the canon guys too, Zel in particular. Plus "subtle" Amelia bashing in one line in the middle of the story, whee! :P)

Comments like make this seem far more wanky then the MSR.

And could we stop generalizing for like five minutes here? Yeah sure some folks at MSR take themselves way to seriously, but most are really there for a laugh and good venting session.

Honestly I don't see the wank here, or if there is wank it's one that adimt to.

Because it's not some F_W members act like they have a superiority complex....

Honestly I don't see the wank here, or if there is wank it's one that adimt to.

Hence why I said quite clearly in the original post that it wasn't a wank, but that the potential for future wankiness is something that some people might want to keep a watch for.

I mean, haven't we had posts with betting pools predictions about the new wank the new Harry Potter book will bring rather than linking to actual wank? Why is this any different?

Because it's not some F_W members act like they have a superiority complex....

Whoah, easy with where you're pointing that gun there, yo! I don't think this particular conversation has merited bringing up that subject... thus far. ^^;

I guess i don't get why it's wanky to think of the past, or something we considered 'better times'? Didn't you ever look back at a good time you had in your life and say, 'wow i wish things could be that way again'? That's what i equate my statement to.

Yes, the MSR is only about a year old, but on the internet things can change very rapidly. There has been an increase of wanky members...and please note i did not say above that ALL the members of the MSR were like this, so sorry if you misunderstood. I said SOME, i was not generalizing.

It's just an opinion, relax. You seem to be looking for trashing that isn't there.

The one that gets me is the whole "how dare they sully tolkien" comments. Um, yeah, because writing a story where Leggy and Aaragon go frolicking into the sunset is so much less insulting to the original source. Or as if any kind of slash for that matter doesn't make Tolkien roll over in his grave. Not that I don't like LOTR fanfic or slash, I do, but oh the sense of superiority.

Actually, I kind of doubt slash makes Tolkien roll over in his grave. If you actually look at the books (dull bits of pressed sawdust they are), the presence of female characters is way less than it is in the movies. There's hardly any, in fact. That whole matter of Sam doting on Frodo and practically acting like a wife wasn't invented for the movies...
(You'll also notice that Bilbo was 111, and still a bachelor. Frodo was something like, what, 45 in the books when he set out on his adventure? Still a bachelor. Sam was of a similar age. Still a bachelor. You never hear Gandalf mentioning that he's ever had a wife or a girlfriend... Saruman was hardly swimming in concubines once he'd siezed power...)
