Once again, a troll gets the wank started, whether it is actually a troll or not.

A concerned parent posts what some called a very polite post:
When I read what you all wrote I was horrified at what how you all were treating her. You not only attacked the fic you personnally attacked her as well. Say what you want about the story but please do not personally attack the writer especially one so young.

Some go through the explanation of "Most GAFFers don't post links when reviewing. Those are the trolls who do that, trying to stir up trouble. We don't have control over them."
Others called it a troll. Then of course, we get the posts of don't feed the troll.

Then of course, the gaffers attack each other. Hilo Hello posts "I apologise profusely, on account of everyone, that your daughter had to see this."
Which sets off:
Cyberwulf:"Hilo Hello, don't ever apologise on my behalf, or presume to speak for me, again. GAFFers do not possess a single giant hive mind."
surprise surprise, Heywood:"Fuck you, tool. No one ever gave you permission to speak for all of us. Don't ever claim to speak for me or on my behalf. I am perfectly capable and willing to voice my own opinion, and I'd say that a good number of us here have one differing from yours. Don't involve the rest of us because you can't tell the difference, and don't put words in our mouths while you're at it." I assume "tool" is a typo for "too"

There is the usual "reasons" for it being a troll, why it couldn't be (Polite!) I'm reporting this to the site guru!!!!

ETA: Got rid of the confusing underlining, sorry.

Dude, I don't know if you meant to just underline, or make links, but... just giving you a heads up that things may not be completely right.

I think it's her way of direct quoting. That's okay -- I didn't know the HTML tag to put quotation marks around my words either until some nice soul pointed out that, in a pinch, I could use a complicate keystroke sequence of Shift-' instead.

Uh, did you mean to link where all that underlining is?

Not entirely convinced of the "legality" of this wank, but then 13 year old isn't directly involved so I suppose it passes.

It's this whole idea that children have to be shielded and protected and nurtured and mollycoddled that has given us an entire generation of self-absorbed, opportunistic assholes.

Life isn't always fun, fair or pleasant. Not everyone is going to be nice to you. If you never have to deal with criticism, then you never learn HOW to deal with it.

I understand this parent's desire to stand up for her child, but instead of taking the GAFFers to task, she would have done better to simply comfort her crying child and help her understand that not everyone in the world is as nice as Hello Kitty.

I agree. Any parent would be pissed off, but sadly a kid needs to learn how to deal with it.

Hell, why did that parent let her child on the internet without explaining some people there are complete ass-demons?

Mixed feelings on this. Okay, the kid was upset, and the parent might have been pissed off at people being mean to her - what parent wouldn't?

However, this parent must realize the futility of asking people to stop being mean to her kid ... that stopped working in 5th grade.

I'm automatically suspicious of any communication from a "concerned parent" defending their dear child's creative outlet from the internet meanies.

It's probably because the first time I saw it, it involved an attack on yaoi writers on ff.net by an ff.net member, who then got banned from ff.net when the threatening e-mails (full of poor spelling and grammar, comments that the souls of the yaoi writers were going to burn in hell, and signed by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) were used as proof of TOS violation (an online petition to ff.net/Xing was in there, too).

Suddenly it turned out that NO! It wasn't the ff.net author at all! It was her cousin who used her computer! The author's mother got in the mix with a letter alternating between bitching at those responsible and bemoaning her daughter who was at that very moment in her room bawling her eyes out and was also suicidal.

Yep. If my daughter were suicidal, I'd be spending my time typing up a letter to strangers on the internet to let her have her ff.net account back.

It was amazing, too, that the style of writing used in Mommy's letter was remarkably similar to that of the suicidal author. Ooops, sorry, of the suicidal author's cousin.

I'm all nostalgic now. I must go find that e-mail again and re-read it. Good times. Good times.
