It's all Ahiru's Fault! - That Civil War Icon is So Offensive
Our own [info]ahiru made the very popular icon I'm using in response to a Harmonywank where someone claimed Harmonians were like black slaves.

[info]light_music thinks the icon's evil and insensitive. So do a lot of other people. The thread's here.

I'm blaming this all on Rowling, though. Or maybe Robert E. Lee.

Yep, Ahiru's done some brilliant icons, including this one I'm using right now.

I think the argument they're putting forth is that making jokes about the original statement is fine, as long as they're not visual?

Though I admit I'm confused.

I honestly think the point is it's NOT okay to make jokes about the original statement, because someone out there won't know it was a joke about something else and will be horribly offended by you, instead of at the person who made the comment? They all seem really mad at F_W for having the icon, then are like, "Okay, wow, that someone else actually said that is pretty bad...but how could F_W make a joke about it????"

Err, not sure but I think the point they\'re making is that the icon was pretty fucking tasteless as well. I\'m not sure where I stand on this yet, but I think that the way you\'re sort of joking about her argument is kind of shitty. If I were black I\'d probably think you were a closeted racist cunt, but I\'m not black and this is Fandom Wank, so fuck it! Let\'s mock! Blacks tend to be really sensitive about this shit. I dated one once and I couldn\'t even talk about howkinky her hair was without her crying racism every five seconds.

What part of the joking is shitty?

Was that an accidental triple post, or do you really want people to notice the racism in your comment? (Or was I the only one that saw it?)

They don't use account codes anymore -- you just have to keep checking back at the account creation page.

It was an accident sorry. I\'m not a racist. I think all people are equal but I dont think people shouldn\'t be able to make fun of blacks or spanish people or whoever. You have to admit the joke was pretty shitty. Someone says something comparing something to slavery and you get mad and make icons that piss off blacks. I can see why the black girl is so upset even though I dont agree with her. People are too sensitive to begin with. I might buy a code. Its nice to be with people who dont give a shit about being politically correct.

Nope, I saw it too. And I'm glow-in-the-dark white, oh backslash-mousie, so it's not just black people who get offended by you. (And have you ever stopped to think that perhaps if black people are constantly insulted by what you say, the problem might be not with them but with you and what you're saying?)

Nope I saw it. It's amazing how many people try to defend racism by being racist. :|

I also love how light_music's post represents what ALL BLACK PEOPLE IN THE WORLD FEEL. I think she made it clear that she's only speaking for herself.

Seriously. I mean, discussing hair is nice every now and then, but a girl likes to discuss something other than the 'do for at least long enough to form a sentence or do the laundry or something.

My question is why did he feel the need to bring it up at all? She was black and 'kinky'haired when you first met her right? Why was it even an issue?

Say for argument sake, it came up in a conversation once, judging by her reaction shouldn't you have guessed she was sensitive about her hair and learnt not to bring it up again?

Maybe she wasn't the problem and your freaky hair fetish was.

It must have been such an intellectually stimulating relationship.

"Hey, baby doll, your hair is mega-kinky!"
"Shut up."
"Hey, did you know your hair was all kinky and stuff?"
"Shut up."
"Temper, temper, Miss Kinky."
"Shut up!"
"That is some seriously kinky hair!"
"Here's the ring back, go away."
"Bitch! This is what I get for dating an over sensitive black woman."
