Fanficrants: Love/Hate Pairing Mini-wank
A poster by the name of [info]shazarazade drops in on [info]fanficrants and begins letting everyone know that s/he doesn't like some sort of Final Fantasy IV pairing that is (apparently) a love/hate relationship. The post seems to irritate the usual readers of fanficrants--probably because it comes off rather condescending.

Complete with the usual comments like "Don't like, don't read" and "fanfiction is fantasy."

And the best part: [info]mergle rushing to his/her pal's aide. Note that [info]mergle says "I think I know who this is..." yet the OP has s/h/it defined as a friend.

While it's always good to know you truly can bitchslap an LJ page into any traditional web format, I think people might begin the stoning countdown in light of the H/Hr-ers scroll-hat0rz feeling most oppressed. :)

I find it funny that this is a community for ranting about trends in fanfiction and so many people are going "if you don't like it, don't read it."

Complaints about script format, songfics, and whatnot would not garner this type of reaction from people. But fangirls and fanboys just love their pairing wars!

I play these games all the time, but never have any idea who anyone is talking about. I just rename all the characters. Thus, my OTP is safe and sound.

She does appear as an adult later in the game, though I don't know how much older. Maybe someone else here can give a specific age, since I didn't play the game much.

I am usually (there are times when it doesn't bother me, but listing them proved to take up too much space). But I learned to pretty much leave the folks who like it to their own corner of the fandom sandbox.

...Wow. It's so tl;dr. How can there be that much to say about a potential relationship in a video game where a script of the relevant dialogue would be about half a page long?

Not sure what your point is, here. Are we expected to have a deep, personal relationship with everyone on our flist, or even recognise their usernames? Because, nah, not happening.

I see much potential in Rydia/Edge. They could be cute/fluffy with loads of snark & innuendo-dialogue but also angsty, Edge spending years lusting after her and Rydia being cold and all, "Ninja prince? I'm so unimpressed."

I love every character in FFIV, I swear to god. I should replay it just for that fact.

Anyway. Um.

But moreover, there's another issue with pairings like Edge/Rydia, and this is where it gets not only uncomfortable but also squicky: No means no.

Er. Where in the game is it implied Edge will end up raping her? Yes, he's persistant as hell but some guys are. Might make them a bit creepy, doesn't necessarily make it "squicky".

And it's the same with Edge and Rydia: when she indicates "your advances are unwelcome," and she doesn't indicate "just kidding," and he keeps hitting on her, I perceive that as harassment.

HARASSMENT?! It's a friggin' videogame! And he hits on her maybe twice in the game and that's HARASSMENT?! Excuse me while I laugh.

I can't be arsed to read further. I think she picked the wrong pairing as an example because really, Edge only hits on Rydia a couple of times and from canon, it can be interpreted as anything - like with FF's usually - it's not necessarily romantic and it's not impossible that Rydia does like him secretly, either. If people ship them, what's the harm? And she gets sort of weird with the rapist/rape victim comparison and that has no connection to this game or those characters and yeah, just NO.

If Rydia doesn't want him, can I have him? Because NINJA PRINCE. How's that for some 12 year old otaku's daydream? Purrfect.

Now, I myself am not inclined towards people who are caustic to me from the outset. I was teased and all that stuff with real hostility when I was younger, and when someone teases me, my defenses go up, and I feel like I'm dealing with an enemy unless said person has already established that they're my friend. Said person must first be nice to me, and not try to tease or insult me until they know me reasonably well and there is a definite mutual feeling of goodwill that says "of course you and I both know that you would never hurt me."

Then it's a good thing that the pairing in question is Edge/Rydia, and not Edge/Shazarazade.
