And GAFF will wank on... and on... and on...
Molotov Cocktail comes to the well-known badfic mocking forum known as GAFF and, in a very correct English, s/h/it says...

Oh God! You people at GAFF are so, so SO MEAN!

And it pretty much goes downhill from there.

Want some jewels?

Knorg: Most GAFFers are fourteen year olds these days, reviewing classmates and peers.

MC: Of course. There are a lot of fourteen-year-olds that have settled into seeking borderline sexual pleasure in taunting fledgling writers. That form of bitterness can really only come from unsatisfied adults.
Most of the people here have the opportunity to comment on a writer's work in a way they'll be aware of, and yet you don't see it. Then you have this, as if it's more fun to giggle when they can't hear you.
I used to do that.
And then I turned nine and officially outgrew that phase of my life.

***

Kahteh: So you'd rather we reviewed people's fics and told them to their face that we think their precious work of art's a pile of steaming shit?

***

So you also find telling a terrible but funny joke about, say gays, not in front of someone gay, because it would hurt his feelings, bad?
Because as you seem to put it, we all have to tell these infront of the person...
Sounds like someone that never developed any social skills...

***

Mvctar Avrelivs:Heh, someone's been listening to Evanescence
I think what our Comrade here has failed to realize is that GAFF is not only written by prepubescent 13-years olds, but also 'mature' adults who should know better. Besides, what with beta readers, spellcheck etc. around, the only person to blame for the flames you get for posting your substandard fic is yourself. Even then, what most people consider 'flaming' is simply the act of giving concrit.
Now, take out that wangsty Amy Lee crap and put on some Rammstein. Or Iron Maiden. AC/DC, perhaps. Trust me, you'll thank your Uncle Avrelivs later

***

MC: Where is the pleasure in telling a bunch of kids everything they're doing wrong?
Cyberwulf:If they take your advice and become far, far better writers, there’s a lot of pleasure in it.

MC: Does making fun of them serve some greater purpose?
CW:Yes. It makes me laugh.

MC: I know that whenever I come to grips with the fact that I'm a fat, pizza-eating tub of lard I feel the urgent need to speed over to the local elementary school and stomp on some little kids.
CW:Good for you, Kiddie-Stomping Tub of Lard. I think I’ll call you that from now on, seeing as you’ve admitted it.

MC aka Kiddie-Stomping Tub of Lard: There are a lot of fourteen-year-olds that have settled into seeking borderline sexual pleasure in taunting fledgling writers. That form of bitterness can really only come from unsatisfied adults.
CW:Oh look, a lame, generic insult aimed in our direction. Blah. Come back when you’ve got some compound swearwords strung together and something witty to say about our mothers, preferably drenched in over-the-top sarcasm.

MC aka Kiddie-Stomping Tub of Lard: Most of the people here have the opportunity to comment on a writer's work in a way they'll be aware of, and yet you don't see it.
CW: Actually, many people here do comment on writers’ work, which you would know if you weren’t here a wet day.

MC aka Kiddie-Stomping Tub of Lard: Then you have this, as if it's more fun to giggle when they can't hear you.
CW: Actually, it’s kinder to poke fun at stuff in a place that isn’t the author’s review board or inbox.

MC aka Kiddie-Stomping Tub of Lard: And then I turned nine and officially outgrew that phase of my life.
CW: Oh… my… why, I’ve seen the light! How immature I’ve been, behaving like a nine-year-old on the Internet. Thank you, Kiddie-Stomping Tub of Lard, for taking minutes of your valuable time to register on this site just to screech - I mean, educate us and make us see the error of our ways. From now on I shall endeavour to be more like you, and join you on your crusade to end mockery of fanfiction written by mollycoddled, egotistical teenagers. May I adopt you as my God?

****

MC: Why should vindictive criticism change what a person wants to read? Ideally, isn't the purpose of fiction to entertain? I'm not entirely sure that people need to be told what they should think is good.
S1701: Who said anyting about telling people what is good and what is bad? Suggestions for good stories are offered in the "Antidote" section, but just like anything else people may or may not like it.
And let's face it, there are just some stories that are so shockingly awful that no amount of constructive criticism short of "destroy all the evidence that this ever existed" is going to save it.

MC: Drinking is fun, swimming is fun, rollerskating while high is fun. Making fun of others is mediocre amusement, at best. Again, I'd like to point out the fact that much of what you say -- that you neeed to let steam off onto strangers -- suggests that the real problem is YOU, and the authors just take the brunt of your mental issues.
I pity people who mock strangers to release aggression.
S1701: Then you must pity a lot of people, including stand-up comics, most cable news anchors, actors, political cartoonists...

MC:The thirteen-year-old in question hasn't seen the 'snarking' of his fic. I told him it was awful to his face, I watched his disappointment, and then he went back and worked on it. Problem solved.
S1701: Then he is more mature than a vast majority of the people who write fanfiction and post it on the internet. Brutal honesty to those people usually results in either grudge reviewing of our work (I use the same screenname on ff.net as I do here) or a massive counter-attack by the author's friends (drowning out the concrit in a squeeing frenzy).

***

I pity people who think swimming is more fun than mocking strangers. You poor, wretched thing, you.

I love how this argument has gone so far:

Malcontent: You are all horrible because you make fun of people and you like it!
GAFF: Um, yeah?
Repeat until baiting Malcontent gets boring.

****

JAFO: Molotov is absolutely right on all counts. There's no GAFF on this forum more amusing than when you all band together to try to justify your miserable existence.
And to all you MST3K fans, to paraphrase the inimitable Lloyd Bentsen: I've seen MST3K, I've laughed at MST3K, and you people are no MST3K. Leave the mocking to the professionals ladies

****

MC: However, gay jokes are damn funny.

OpheliaNevermore: I wanted to make a reasonable, logical post about your opinion, to the effect that I personally mock bad fiction to soothe the pain of reading it. However, I saw that little gem. And I got pissed.
So we're supposed to gently inform deaf ears that their fiction needs vast amounts of work and a good spell check, but it is perfectly acceptable for you to mock a lifestyle that cannot be changed behind a person's back? You say yourself that it is wrong to apply criticism to what cannot be changed, is mockery (such as we do for things that can be improved, like writing) any better?
We're pathetic for fic-bashing, but you're in the clear for gay jokes? I feel sick.

****

* steps out of soapbox and shakes her head * Morons...

PS: Yes, I know the date's WAY back-dated. Blame that on the uni PC I posted from. Will keep it like that for general amusement, thanks. XDDDDDDD

ETA: Changed the words in the link and added some more comments worth noticing.

One bit I picked up on:

"This is like all the teachers of a highschool getting together to secretly mock and grade papers without student knowledge."

Because of course, THEY DO THIS. There are entire pieces which are compilations of bad writing by students, most of them flying about on the Internet. "Life Reeked With Joy", anyone?

Yup.

I used to grade papers for my sins for a living, and I always had the mose egregious examples of GA prose on the top of the pile to share with my boss.

If teachers couldn't laugh among themselves there would be a lot more of them in various mental and penal institutions.

It did remind of me High School though. My AP English teacher would often remove the names from papers..give them to us to snark "critique" ...which usually ended up with us being a bit meaner than normal.
