Questionable Content is a hipster/indie webcomic. (If you haven't read it in a while, I suggest you catch up now, to avoid spoilers.) One of the main characters, Marten, has long had a crush on the female protagonist, Faye, but she pretty much refuses to open up to anyone, and uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism. (No one will get that reference.) Several days ago, at Strip #500, she finally began opening up. In today's strip, she finally reveals why she's so screwed up; she walked in on her father killing himself.

The Forums: OMGWTFBBQ.

The forums' reaction is generally positive, people registering just to comment, the usual. But one guy mentions that the "BLAM!" used in the last panel may be a little cartoony.

cacuhuate: Anyone else think the "Blam" was morbidly cartoonish and amusingly shaped?

It was supposed to be serious and all... but the blam... just looks silly! No complaint really.
Link mine.

ALoveSupreme: agreed. It sort of took me out of the strip. Dang.

Kid Amnesiac: I'll complain. It was stupid.

Fact.

I thought it was going to be that he raped her or something. This was an obvious way to go.

thereedee:Bah, QC is turning into "redizu" manga and/or schisophrenic anime.

Faye is becoming something similar that Cloud Strife is (FF7). Unsocial, quiet, introvertial.

And all this BLAM business is all way too familiar to manga/anime lovers Smile so, nothing really new, except that overused concept is used in western comic style. In manga there are countless instances of this situation we have here today
I would just like to point out that TRD registered just to say that.

KA again: You can try and generalize American readers by their overreacting about the use of the onomatopoeia as opposed to the mighty mental prowess of your average manga reader, but the guy was telling a serious story, not a tale of a lovesick robot and his talking cat. So, yes, the "BLAM" was incredibly cartoony and unnecessary.
Does anyone else think that the only other options were explicitly showing the shot, or going the classic "shilouette" route?

lastclearchance:[quote of KA's earlier comment about rape]
Which is why no one guessed it here and plenty of people guessed rape?
[quote of KA's above reply]
Notwithstanding that QC has a robot (and a superhero for that matter) I think he has a point. It's not that we don't read manga. It's that our cultural expectations (shaped by our experience) has disassociated sound effects and dramatic storytelling.

I blame the Batman TV show.

Und so weiter. The people criticising the "BLAM" get ranted at. Sideways makes me wince by using the word "chillax". The cartoonist responds. And, finally;
KimJongSick:If anybody makes a "boom headshot" joke I'm going to have to beat them senseless.

Please, no furbashing.

Actually, yeah, minus the "amusingly shaped". The placement of the font in the panel looks really slapped on like there was no thought given to the composition. My overall impression = it's half-assed. I won't even go into the colors.

Okay, the Fontwhore will shut up now. Good night.

Good lord. You know, if there was going to be QC wank I'd have expected it to be over the indie bands namechecked on a regular basis, not something like a sound expressed in visual form (y'know, seeing as it being a cartoon strip, there is no sound so the gunshot's gotta be expressed somehow). Is there nothing you hipster kids can't wank over?

I like Jeph Jacques's reply though. I have got to manage to work "Jesus Christ fucking a goat on the MOON, people" into a conversation sometime.

I like that people are totally ignoring the fact that QC actually IS A CARTOON. Did you not notice the tiny talking robot in the first panel? Seriously, Jeph has never been overly concerned with realism.

also, there's a tiny bit of wank on the qc_comic lj community. There aren't any throwdowns yet or anything, but the op does say, "If I were Jeph*, I would give up on story telling, and just go back to snappy one liners and complaing about music. Or, I would suggest actually planning out the stories, and keeping them in a reasonable time frame, instead of suddenly jumbling it all up after months and hints and repetitiveness.
*Which I am not, it is HIS comic, and he can run it as he wants. Just giving an opinion here."

and that's good enough for me!

I find myself not all that impressed by it. The art's good but the drama needs some work. It should have been much starker, and who shoots themselves out in the yard, anyway?

As for the wank, I can see getting upset over the typeface. It does look like a newspaper coupon, sort of. Cartoon or not, it's a guy shooting himself. Let's have some dignity. Although... 12 pages?

Wank over the sound effect? I was thinking to myself, Man, Faye's kind of stupid for not saying anything, or dropping something, or otherwise attempting to avert this tragedy, and I don't see how it's going to end up, "So anyway. That's why I can't date you."

But the sound effect? I don't even REMEMBER the sound effect. As it was, you know, not as important as the act it implied happening.

I suspected something like this would end up here since the smaller child couldn't get QC to load yesterday morning, and it took until this morning to get the page to load.

And? "Blam" in that font and those colors, is as close as I could get, if I were designing the graphics, to communicate the experience.

First of all, if she's looking at him shoot himself in the head, she's going to experience the sound and the sight of blood flying at about the same moment, against that pale yellow summer dawn sky. So the colors are inherant to the scene that was set.

Secondly, the "blam" is a whole lot more line what a close gunshot sounds like than "bang" which is cartoonish and stereotypical.

And finally, whoever said "she should have said something..." needs to play dodgeball more, or watch fewer cop movies. The way that story unfolds, she's have to have response times like a SWAT sniper to get the words out before the gun went off.

Sorry, I'll get the tissues...

Faye is becoming something similar that Cloud Strife is (FF7). Unsocial, quiet, introvertial.

Because we all know Cloud has been the only "unsocial, quiet, introvertial" fictional character since the beginning of time.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL INDIE BAND M I RITE? P.S. SEX AND PUNCHINGS.

That there is QC.

Barring that, I still did try to give it a chance. Just...not my thing. I hate any comic propped up on the back of LOLOL SUBCULTURE.

I still don't see how having your dad die would lead to all of the sexual dysfunction she has...she's always least comfortable with anything in the sexual realm of things. It was never "I hate getting close to people", it was more "OMG DON'T TOUCH MY BOOBS YOU IDIOTS".

I just want to say "Thank You!" for introducing me to this comic. I love it.

Although ... couldn't you have done so when I'm less busy?
