Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
The ABBA fandom is filled with middle aged men who should have stopped obsessing over ABBA 20 years ago, and teeny boppers who's seemingly sole purpose in life is to squee over Bjorn's chest hair. Over at ABBA Site the various memebers occasionally clash over who is the best ABBA fan, or what musically group is ripping off ABBA's 'genius'. The current hot topic is over Madonna's new single 'Hung Up' which samples part of ABBA's song 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A man after midnight)'.

abba-liciousfanatic makes a post saying: He/She/It doesn't think highly of Madonna for using a sample of Gimme x 3

rhythmotronic steps in and says: "Get real! The world is not turning around ABBA. Maybe it did a few decades ago, but not anymore. And no artist has ever done better than Madonna."

gparker tells the OP to read more topics on the subject of 'Hung Up', "THEN make an INFORMED comment." and carribean tells the OP to "Please just add your point at one of the countless other topics!" gparker goes on to inform caribbean that talking about ABBA is better than talking about Agnetha and Frida's hair, and caribbean agrees but states again that "why do we keep on talking about her single here over and over again in many many topics???!!!"

Anton226 enters the thread saying: "Basically, Madonna is a singer who isn’t very good at singing; therefore I don`t see the point in respecting her music.", and gparker snipes back that: "Yes Anton - but Madonna`s not sampling YOUR music so not many people would care that you don`t like her singing voice or respect her music right????" and Anton226 fires back that, "She’s only ripped Gimme Gimme Gimme off because she wants to make money and realises that Abba tunes are a far better money making proposition, than anything her or her producers could come up with by themselves."

Tiger-Soren wonders "What have some of you people been eating for dinner tonight? Sour grapes? Is it bitterness that Madonna has achieved twice as many UK Top 10 hits as ABBA?" followed carribean posting (once more) "Hung Up is catchy but do we have to discuss this here over and over again?? Too many Madonna topics..."

Small for now, but it was growing as I typed up the report!

*is excited got to use Agnetha/Frida icon*

Seeing as how Abba has only allowed something like, two artists to ever sample their work I doubt they only agreed to let Madonna use Gimme Gimme Gimme because of the "promotional aspect" (besides the fact Madonna's last few albums and singles have not done too well).

You keep switching from carribean to caribbean in spelling. Its properly spelled caribbean, but the user wrote it as carribean, so maybe its just your fingers fighting for dominance. "No! Two r's! NO! Two b's! Lets be correct here!"

Sorry. I only know this because I live there. ;_;

So according to the OP every time an artist covers another artist's song, they're pretending to BE that person?

<-- Is imagining the Offspring pretending to be Gemini and Mariah Carey posing as Journey.

This isn't like Sclub7 and the ATeens remaking some of Abba's old songs, so why bother Moddona? Though there was probably wank about that anyway and I think those two groups went the way of the Spice girls right?

Anyway... u_u;;;

I hope he's not talking about ABBA covers here, because if he's saying that Madonna is better than Erasure then I CUT J00, BEYOTCH!'

Whenever I hear "Hung Up" on the radio, it just makes me wish I had a copy of the Erasure version of "Gimme Gimme Gimme" in my car. Woe!

Heee! I'm commenting only to relate an ABBA related anecdote from last Friday's Dante class:

professor: "...and so, the rhyme scheme for Dante's poetry went ABBA, BCCB..."

other student: "Hey, Abba! That's, like, Hebrew for 'Father'!"

me: "It's also Swedish for DISCO!"

...and nobody in my class got it. *weeps, goes to listen to 'Mamma Mia'*

That song and the accompanying video have brought so much horror to my life.

1) The first time I heard the song, I immediately realized not only that it was an ABBA riff, I knew from which album, which song, and all the lyrics to said song.

2) I made the fatal mistake of seeing the video the other morning while hitting the treadmill. Madonna should realize that it's not really all that visually appetizing to be seen dry-humping a boom box.

(This fits for music wank too!)

So nobody in the thread pointed out that ABBA gave their approval to Madonna using this sample and, indeed, that their doing so was a big deal because it's so rare?

If it were a song that was just highly derivative of "Gimme Gimme Gimme", that'd be one thing, but she got the blessing from on high. And I like how it turned out, personally.
