From the E!Online boards yesterday morning, losmaven, a fan of Arrested Development that is bitter about its cancellation, has a THERE-I-SAID-IT moment:

Because I watch Arrested Development, I'm a better person than those who do not. You actually have to be an idiot not to like it. I don't want to hear about different tastes and whatnot. If you don't "get" that show, there something wrong with you. It's true... I may sound like a television elitist and that's fine. Because the fact that I enjoy Arrested Development makes it true.

And when someone suggests he was being facetious, he expounds, apparently with a total lack of irony:

I'm sure there are "smart" people who don't like Arrested Development. But these people are just book smart. I don't care if you come back to me and say you're a brain surgeon or a physisist. That doesn't mean anything to me. For those who do enjoy AD you probably understand the difference between "Smart" and just "Book smart"

I'm actually not kidding.

When someone calls him on his charming attitude here, he goes on to clarify:

I'm not saying that it's the most intellectually stimulating thing ever... I'm saying that Arrested Development only seems to stimulate the intelligent.

Is it a bad thing that I don't entirely disagree?

I mean, okay, not everyone who likes ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is better or smarter than those who don't, and those who don't aren't stupid or anything. But I can't help feel the overall reason the show is about to be cancelled is that audiences don't know quality when they see it.

(Look at THE WAR AT HOME and tell me TV viewers are intelligent. I dare ya.)

The "You're too stupid to understand" Arrested Development fans piss me off almost as much as the "You're too stupid to understand" Veronica Mars fans. Nobody likes to see intellectual superiority over a tv show SRSLY GUYS, NOT HELPING OUR CAUSE, just like nobody likes to see someone whip out their cock and wave it around unless he's hot, in which case it is encouraged along with shirtlessness.

It's disappointing, since I'm a fan of both shows, and I think I'm pretty smart, but I don't think the appreciation of either show proves my intelligence or improves my intelligence. However, I do believe that you're some kind of neanderthal if you don't enjoy 24; a neanderthal that doesn't understand the subtle nuances of Jack Bauer's slow descent into insanity, or the differences between "Tell me where the BOMB is!" and "Tell ME where the bomb IS!".

While the show is a notch above alot of the crap the network airs, the constant "Cancel? No cancel!" thing really gets irritating. Hopefully, Fox'll drop it and HBO or something will pick it up. Sort of sounds like a penny: pick it up, you'll have good luck! Except with the ratings, y'know.

I don't care about AD. What I do care about is that the Fox affiliate has seen fit, RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND, to run my Simpsons rerun in a teeny little soundless box, like THAT helps, and put Gary "She was a girl and girls are icky cunts who can't play football" Barnett's long-overdue resignation press conference on the screen.

I think the main problem is that Arrested Development has a lot of in-jokes that wouldn't be funny to people who hadn't seen the earlier episodes being referenced.
There are plenty of people who don't want to have to pay attention to a show, and those people are stupid, but certainly people can have different taste and not be less intelligent. *headdesk*

Hmm, this is my very first "goddammit, stop being on my side, you're making my side look STUPID!" comment! Um, yay?
And I'm no genius, but Arrested Development is just about my favorite thing ever in the history of the world.

I tried watching AD. Didn't really care for it. I was going to give it another shot, but now it's on during Corner Gas, so that's not happening.

All in all, I'm not surprised it was cancelled. Of course, now the fans are going to be even more vocal and obnoxious, hailing the show as genius well before its time etc.

Well, more than they do already.

I feel about Arrested Development the way I feel about the Beatles and Jesus. If fans of the Beatles and Jesus would shut the fuck up about how great the Beatles and Jesus are, maybe I'd come around to enjoying both of them in my own sweet time.

As it is, while Jesus and I agree on many things, his fangirls make DomLijiah look like a sane community. And I will gladly stipulate that the Beatles are musically important and influential in a great many ways, but I simply do not enjoy listening to their music at all. And Arrested Development became waaaaay too clubbish, in a "you either think this is the greatest thing ever, or you suck" kind of way, and was massivly on my nerves from day one.
