Narnia Wank
Over at Pandagon, Amanda Marcotte posts an entry titled How enchanting are the Chronicles of Narnia?

I was thinking about this because of the feeding frenzy of free publicity for Disney's live action adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, another dead Jeebus movie, but this one a little more palatable than the snuff-flick-masquerading-as-religious-art-that-shall-not-be-named. I'm of two minds on this film--on one hand, I can understand the Christian right's desperation to have the same fucking story told in a whole new way, because rereading the Bible over and over, especially if you stick mostly to the one or two passages that can be construed as anti-gay, can get sort of boring. On the other hand, they should feel a little guilty, don't you think, about lavishing so much attention on a book and a movie that's basic premise is a newer, more fun version of the Greatest Story Ever Told.

Things are pretty calm,

Mnemosyne quotes from the post and responds:

"The book was intended to be and is wielded by believers as covert propaganda for their religion on children--the woman who gave it to me was a devout Christian but said absolutely nothing about the Christian angle of the book, presumably hoping that she could soften me up for a conversion."

Except that it WASN'T WRITTEN TO BE FUCKING COVERT PROPAGANDA FOR FUNDAMENTALISTS!

And then Amanda posts a follow-up that says

As for the Narnia post, c'mon now, y'all. Do I have to like the books in order to get a pass? Am I free to dislike Tolkien?

Update: I am sorry I was flip about something people are clearly touchy about. But unfortunately the ugly truth is that lovely as Narnia is, Lewis' plot kind of sucks, the ascendency to royalty is boring, and the theology just isn't all that. But hey, I wasn't ever the hugest fantasy fan, so hate away.

And Mnemosyne gets defensive
Mnemosyne:
Nobody said you have to like the books. I think PZ Myers' comment has some good reasons to dislike them aside from the Christian symbolism.

But it's like you're arguing that we all have to stop listening to Johnny Cash because he's been co-opted by the fundies. Do you really want to start drawing those kinds of lines? Because you'll pry "Man in Black" out of my cold, dead hands.

Amanda:
The problem is that I didn't say that the Christian symbolism is why I didn't like it. I don't like it because it's boring. The Christianity is weakly argued and wingnuts like the weak argument because it fits their embattled self-image. None of this strikes me as controversial.

Mnemosyne:
So you'd like them better if the Christianity were "strongly argued" like, say, the Left Behind books?

I'm really not getting your point. If you were bored by them, fine. It's a matter of taste. But what the heck does "the Christianity is weakly argued" mean?

Amanda:
No. I have two separate points. They aren't that interesting as literature. And--remember, this is an entirely separate point--I don't think they are effective Christian propaganda. Granted, they might be better conversion tools if they were better books, but the Left Behind series demonstrates that's probably not true.

Mnemosyne:
Again, there are plenty of perfectly valid criticisms to make of Lewis' books. But snarkily dismissing books that were a huge part of some people's childhoods -- especially people who (guess what?) didn't become fundamentalist Christians despite their exposure to the books -- is really not worthy of you.

Josh Jasper is here to tell us the difference between personal taste and just plain bad.
The problem isn't that you chose Narnia, it's that you still have yet to learn the difference between "I didn't like it because I got bored" and "I didn't like it because it's boring, and a bad book".

Seriously. Learn to seperate your taste from "good" and "bad". No one gives a shit if you don't like anything from Shakespeare to Rumi to Van gough to Kurasawa.

J-Ha:
Oh Jesus H Aslan, Josh

Please give me more of you "People who say things on the internet I disagree with" list! Oh wait, don't. I don't give a rat's ass about your e-integrity. My comment was tongue-in-cheek and more about the general observation that people don't get their panties in a wad about baseless snobbery/criticism until it's one of their cherised books/movies/songs that's being criticized.

Mnemosyne pulls out the Glove of Ignorance and slaps Amanda with it
Amanda:
Yep, it's very pagan, just like the article I linked to approvingly said. Which is why I pitied Lewis, because pagans have better stories, so of course he had to water down his Christian theme to get at the better story.

Mnemosyne:
Pretty rich coming from someone who admits she never read the book and is going off other peoples' opinions.

And if you don't know that the entire story of Jesus is built on pagan imagery (Dionysus, anyone?) then you're pretty ignorant of the religion you were raised in.

And then people start swapping titles of their favorite children's books.

ETA: Heh, forgot the link to the main wank.
ETA2: Because seven hours later, I notice I twice gave Mnemosyne an extra "e".

SOMEONE ONCE GAVE ME A BOOK! SHE MIGHT'VE MEANT IT AS A MESSAGE, BUT WE NEVER ACTUALLY DISCUSSED IT! THAT BITCH!

So what she's saying is...the Left Behind series is better reading than the Chronicles of Narnia?

Is that supposed to imply that the Left Behind series are better books than the Chronicles of Narnia? I mean, I'll admit I got bored and quit reading during Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but DAMN. The Left Behind books kinda suck. I only kept reading as long as I did because I liked one character, and once they killed him...

The Chronicles of Narnia aren't my favorite books, although I fully admit I probably would have enjoyed them more if I had read them when I was younger. But Amanda just needs pipe down. Just because a book has strong Christian themes allegory doesn't mean it is going to be used as a tool to oppress all of the non-christians.

Although I can't say I can get behind the idea that we cannot criticize things that are much beloved by most people either.

I'll take the Narnia books over Anne Rice's "Jesus Christ: Lust for Glory" series any day of the week.

Just wait till Jesus has a threesome with Peter and John, then confronts Lord Voldemort in the final book.

... that a Pandagon thread would show up on F_W sooner or later?

I briefly considered posting an earlier one, in which someone made reference to the Evil/Dead lesbian* controversy in Buffy fandom, and Mnemosyne jumped down her throat, assuming (wrongly) that the person was one of the rabid kitten types. This one's better. :D

*Sounds like a new Bruce Campbell vehicle, doesn't it?

I knew that The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe movie was going to get people in a wanky mood. I just knew it.

Yeah, I read the books when I was younger. I really liked them. Did I consider the religious undertones? No, I just thought it was cool that one of the main characters was a lion. People need to take off their paranoia hats and think. There was the same wank when The Passion Of The Christ came out and you know what? The whole nation didn't become religious. Horror of horrors- people thought for themselves! Seriously, if a story about the killing of Jesus didn't work then I don't think a movie about a lion and a thing that holds clothes is going to either. You need to have more faith in people to think for themselves. Contrary to what I usually say, I truly believe that if we allow people to make their own choices they're going to follow what they believe is right for them regardless of what a damn movie says.

*that said, the lazy Catholic hops off her soap box and wanders off*

But it's like you're arguing that we all have to stop listening to Johnny Cash because he's been co-opted by the fundies.

I could understand this argument a bit more if "Ring of Fire" worked all all as a Christian allegory. I mean, I can see the reference to hell, but I don't remember "love is hell" being all that big of a theme in the bible, really.

But, then, I'm agnostic, so what do I know?

I read most of the books as a kid, and thought it really cool that the Church Library had copies.

Needless to say, the religious allegory went right over my head. It was only a few years ago that I found out the books were a metaphor for Christianity.

I tried to read the books. I really did. I just couldn't get into them Christian allegory or no.

I'm going to see the movie chanting CGI! CGI! CGI! to see if I can convert anyone to The Almighty Pixel.

The next person who bitches about the religions symbolism in The Chronicles of Narnia is going to be massacred. I hope.

If you can't get past the symbolism to read the books, then you are sorely missing out on some damn fine literature.

Actually, I'm fairly certain Lewis said several times he didn't write the Narnia books as Allegory - they were just a story. I think that they contain allegory is more a side effect of his faith rather than anything purposeful.

I hate those books. I used to kind of like them but I'm up to my neck with all the special pleading that people do for them in every conceivable forum. When I saw it crop up in Pandagon I wanted to retch.

If people are uncomfortable with how Susan gets disposed of, or the way the dark-skinned foriegn people are presented, or the way that Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Silver Chair are laced with snarky and innacurate digs at liberal parenting and education, or (my pet peeve) what that bastard does to the dwarves at the end of The Last Battle - deal with it. Don't make it out like everyone needs to see and give lip service to some ultimate goodness in the books. It's not Christian-bashing to not share those values, any more than it's Christian-bashing to say 'Happy Holidays', mmmm-kay?

Haa...am I the only one that read the first book as a child and totally missed the Christian allegory? Because, you see, I didn't start thinking about stories as metaphors until maybe eighth grade and someone gave me those books earlier than that. I just thought, 'hey, cool, I wish I could get to another world through my closet', and never quite finished the series.
Oh, and point to Josh: If you want to impress people by throwing around the names of four of the word's most renowned artists of various kinds of media, you might look cooler if you didn't misspell half of them.

Don't know about the Christian allegory, but the last time I tried to read those books was when I was ten. I started The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, got to the place where one of the characters expressed horror at the lack of Christmas, said to myself, "Nope, can't relate to these people," and tossed the book aside. Worked for me.

I might try reading it again one of these days, though.

Putting aside the question of how good the books are (I liked them when I was a kid, but as an adult, I feel they leave a lot to be desired) sometimes I think fantasy loses out whichever way it goes.

If it's written by a Christian with Christian themes, it gets hung out to dry by the people who freak at anything that might be OMG!ConvertingThem! eg. Narnia, Left Behind

If it's written by a Christian, but mentions 'pagan' concepts, it gets hung out to dry by the Christian fanatics who freak at anything that might be OMG!PaganisingThem! eg. Harry Potter (LotR?)

If it's written by Anne Rice, then thousands of words are brutally massacred and sacrificed on the altar of Ego and She Who Needs No Editor.

Wait! What do you mean there are other fantasy books out there???

I don't know if I'd qualify the Narnia Chronicles as 'great literature' any more than I'd qualify the HP series. There are holes and issues I have with them that I don't have with Susan Cooper's 'Dark Is Rising', or Lloyd Alexander's 'Black Cauldron'. I just don't get the whole freakazoid over the religious tones and themes of the story - or lack thereof.

Hey, if Christian allegories in a fantasy book get my uberChristian friend to read fantasy, when she normally prefers books that are realistic, then I'm all for it!

I say us fantasy lovers should use Narnia as a way to convert Christians into liking fantasy! Start with Narnia and Lord of the Rings, as both were written by Good Christians, and we've got 'em!

Anonymouse chiming in.

I haven't read the books myself and didn't even try until I was cast as the Witch a year and a half ago. I agree with whoever it was that said they are great as children's lit, but kinda fall short when you try to engross yourself in them as an adult. I couldn't finish it. I plan to now, but only because I want to get the actual story before the rest of the movies come out (...which I'm assuming they're planning on).

I find it hard to take criticisms like this as a serious attempt at being intelligent and understood. Because it just smacks of hating Christianity and anything that happens to be vaguely attached to it - just for the sake of hate.

And "covert propoganda"? Before ever professing any kind of faith in religion, Lewis wrote SKADS of stories about made-up worlds and imaginary creatures and languages. He was an author and story-teller long before he ever became a Christian and as a believer, I would imagine he wanted to find a way to combine two things that happened to mean a lot to him. I find it highly doubtful that he sat alone in a dark room and tried to find seekrit ways to work a little evangelizing into those oh, so eebul heathens. Mwuhahaha.

Ive never read the books,Im sure their awesome and its on my TO READ list along with Wicked, Anansi Boys, American Gods, and Mrs.Norrel

I just remember seeing a tv movie where there was big pretty lion that was dying really slowly and painfully and some little kids were crying and there was snow everywhere

I was scarred for life and never attempted to find out what it was
