McCaffrey Fandom's Been Quiet A While
It's good to know that over on The New Kitchen Table things are still as wanky as ever.

Every now and then I wander over for a poke around. Today I am greeted by this.

An extremely important situation has developed within the AMCF Host and Technical community.

Scott, the Technician, has issued the Host Team an ultimatum. He handed in his resignation, giving us 24 hours to either change his mind or he is walking. With him, he has stated, will go the VBulletin License and the Domain License, which were turned over to him, and put in his name by the previous Administration. (note: the 24 hrs is over as of 11 A.M. GMT on December 6, 2005)

This means two things: 1) that Scott would be Stealing the site and 2) is that Scott would own the site, for all intents and purposes, with control over all aspects of the Bulletin Board and associated functions.

The Host Team has unsuccessfully tried to retrieve both licenses over the past several months to ensure the continued site operation.

While we know that Scott has given many hours to the site maintainence, there have also been many unauthorized actions taken without the Host Teams' knowledge and approval, as well as unnecessary backroom changes and adjustments. He also has appeared to dedicate himself to frustrating and overriding many Host Team decisions and requirements to perform their responsibilities to the site.

As you, AMCF members, are the "real" site owners, through your donations and continued support, it is only right that you are aware of this situation.

At approximately 2 A.M. GMT, December 6, 2005, Scott's resignation was accepted by the Host Team, the site database was backed up, and Scott was removed from all Technical, Administrative and Moderator functions of the site. We have reserved a new domain under the name of www.annemccaffreyfans.net . It is not currently set up, but is available for backup purposes.

If necessary, a forum will be created in A Meeting of the Minds for us to discuss the site's future. Guests will be permitted to post in this forum, so registration will not be necessary. We ask that this privilege NOT be abused, and that respect for Cheryl's site be maintained at all times. We will keep you posted about this, if we can, should it need to be done. If you find you cannot access the site, please check the MoM forum. We will do our utmost to keep members informed should anything go wrong, but it may not be possible to notify every member.

A Meeting of the Minds http://forums.srellim.org

We thank you for your friendship and loyalty through the time we've spent together here at AMCF and the previous AMC sites. We are also most grateful to Cheryl for her generosity and support in allowing us to temporary utilize her Forum.

Huh, thinks I. Odd, thinks I. I wants more information, thinks I.

So I prod a bit and fiind this More drama! Yay!

And here comes the lynch party! (Because of course the best way to deal with owner politics is lynch parties.)

(Of course the isn't the first owner kerfuffle though that got cleared up

ETA:- Hosts close the thread with the message that they have a new license. Members are not happy. They want blood. The wank goes on.

I was tempted to post this, but I am involved and it would have had to go in i_wank.

That breach of trust thing is very new--in fact it wasn't up when I was there earlier.

And at risk of wanking here, Scott is in the wrong. He generally is, this is not the first problem with him, and booting his ass, and that of his "friend" (who I'm still half-convinced is a sockpuppet.)

And frankly, it kinda stopped being wanky--pretty much everyone in that thread, even the ones who came in as posting Pollyannas, have ended up calling for Scott to put up or shut up. He has accomplished one thing--united all the KT factions in hating him, even those of us who usually spend our time...well, not necessarily being the nicest to the Host team. (IE all of us who almost got banned en masse from the old board for putting four letters in our sig files.)

I...have no idea what's going on.

Should I go back to laughing at McCaffrey's "science-fiction"? The Ship Who... books are all kinds of hilarity.

The Ship Who Farted. Huh huh huh huh huh.

Seriously, though - I enjoyed her earlier stuff, guilty pleasure though it was. Her most recent books, ghostwritten by Todd or no, are awful. "The Skies of Pern" was excruciating. Every time F'lessan called Tai "my dear green," I wanted to throw the book across the room.

This is truly petty of me, I realise, but I have to get it out of my system, as it is one of my pet peeves: The fact that Scott and Prism aren't taking the time to spell and punctuate properly really isn't helping Scott's case any.

Also, are any of Anne McCaffery's books worth reading? They seem rather interesting, but I've never picked one up and read it. The way y'all are talking about them, I wonder if I should even bother.

Meh, the first one in the Pern series is pretty good "Dragonflight", and I kinda liked the Talent series, but there should be a sign bearing the words, 'ABANDON ALL LOGIC YE WHO ENTER HERE' because after 25 books in the series you'd just like to impale yourself with a fucking tent-peg over all the crazy illogical mary sues randomly inserted into the series.

...but the first books in her series are somewhat okay. AVOID "THE WHITE DRAGON" AT ALL COSTS.

OH, and if anyone thinks she's like, so totally awesome and queen and you aren't really a real fan if you don't agree with omgwtf everything she says? It's her son.

The Harper Hall series is decent, I think: they're YA and so you get less of McCaffery's bizarre sexual politics. (I think it's the only series *not* to have a happy fun virgin/whore dynamic, sheesh.) The heroine is bog-standard Abused Runaway Girl In Male Profession, sadly, but has a decent personality for all that.

The Harper Hall trilogy are honestly pretty decent; Menoly is the least obnoxious female character in any of the Pern books.

I wouldn't touch them with a 39 1/2 foot pole these days, but I enjoyed them up to a point back in the day. The dragons are pretty well thought out, and the way society has developed around them and the Thread is interesting. The sex and gender issues are kind of disturbing, though, and the storytelling isn't particularly noteworthy.

The last book I actually remember reading was the one where the firelizards (??) were discovered. For some reason they struck me as a kind of My Little Reptilian Pony with Wings, Special Firebreathing Version, and I lost interest after that.

If you're petty, then so am I, because I started twitching at all of the insane misspellings and missing punctuation. People start arguing about who "payed" for the site, and Prism seems to think that the -n't contraction is actually -ent (as in: "dident"). Random capitalizations, severe apostrophe abuse, my eyeballs are now bleeding.

And then we got the standard eyerolling of "who cares, it's just grammar/spelling" which make me want to reach through my computer and choke people. Particularly since someone explained rather eloquently that:

"nobody is a perfect grammariser, not even me."

Well played, Amy B. Well played.

Regardless if that Scott guy is justified or not - the members deserve him as much as he deserves them.

If I'd have to chose a side, I'd pick his. His side isn't utterly embarassing ^^ "terrorist" - and that wasn't even the most stupid remark in there. Many seem to think they are witty, and ultimately fail with their flames.

Now, if I ever, somehow, would come to like anything McCaffrey writes(Sorry, curing evil gayness really puts me off) - I now know which community to avoid at all cost.

Actually, just stick with that series, period. Pretty much everything else has something incredibly grating about it.

He was running a chat board like it was his own personal kingdom and seemed to actually think this conferred him some importance as a human being. Kinda sad, really. Then, some seventeen year old guy takes it upon himself to defend the guy in a very disturbing way indeed. Can anyone spell latent homosexual tendencies? Well, not these guys, but anyway.
