I used to feel left out because I wasn't in a wanky fandom
Kingdom Of Heaven is a small and relatively sane fandom, with a lot of Orly worship and a minority of King Baldwin IV worshippers. king_baldwin is an LJ for icons, fics, discussion and shameless fangirling of The Leper King of Jerusalem, both the historical and film versions. Silverwhistle is a prominent member.

All is well in the Kingdom until trojanfightclub posts a noncon fic involving Guy de Lusignan putting the moves on barely-legal King Baldwin. Creepyness aside, it's well written, but for some reason doesn't sit well with Silverwhistle, who says so. Her comments were burninated, but reproduced in a later post by skuldchan what did the burninating- "Horrible. I've seen far too much historical fiction in which real-life characters are used as play-things for authorial kinks, and it leaves a nasty taste." The comment is construed as "injurious with willful intent" and "destructive" by the skuldchan. Silverwhistle is banished forthwith from the Kingdom. Don't like don't read makes an appearance and skuldchan posts a followup explaining the reason behind the banishment. But she's willing to let bygones be bygones if Silverwhistle can stop having an opinion being rude.

Short and concise. I might have wanked a tiny bit but didn't spooge, that I can tell.

*sigh* It used to be you had to drop at least one f-bomb before something could be considered a flame. Kids today.

It seems wank is coming from both sides here.

I have little tolerance for Silverwhistle's 'oh think of the children leper kings' whining.

No one forced her to read a fic which she found distasteful. [Which did have a non-con warning]. The back-button was created for a reason.

On the other hand banning her for wanking, complaining sharing her opinion seems like overkill.

Pretend I actually know my HTML, plz.

Dunno. Here, skuldchan says that Silverwhistle made a public post (in the community, I assume) about it, which I'd also have thought to be a) annoying as hell, b) crying for attenshuuuun, and c) off-topic. And she's back as an anonymous now, continuing to complain about how she was banned "after all the time and effort [she's] put in to sharing information." Oh, boo-hoo.

But I'm probably biased because I for one is happy to see trojanfightclub use her talent in the way she did. I might join the fandom if she writes more even-creepier-than-in-the-movie!Guy. <3

Edward Norton was the only reason I was going to go see that film. Then I find out he wears some sort of a mask the entire time. Boo. (Yes, am a ridiculous fangirl.)

But he played King Baldwin, right? Perhaps I should see it, after all.

You get to see him be hideous and leper-y for a few seconds, but not much else. He does make a kickass character, though. That's still not me endorsing the movie. I only watched it because it was extra credit for my hisotry class, England to 1688, along with a rewrite of Richard III starring Ian McKellen.

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS BEFORE I SPENT ALL THIS TIME NOT SEEING THAT MOVIE?

Especially because, er, "KoH" uses real-life characters (Balian of Ibelin, Baldwin IV, Raymond of Tripoli aka Tiberias, Guy and Sybilla ofLusignan, Saladin, Reynard of Chatillon) as play-things for authorial kinks.

Whatever Ridley Scott's might be.

I'm not asking about damn internet but about people's RESPONSIBILITY for their own thoughts.

What, I have to be responsible for my THOUGHTS now? Dude, they're MY thoughts. Mind your own business.

And here we have a great example how a talented person uses his/her talent NOT in the right way.

Yes, because someone died and made YOU the judge of that. How pretentious can you get?

I find rapefic pretty damn offensive, too, which is why I don't read it under any circumstances. Since I never read rapefic, I obviously never comment on any specific examples of said. In all honesty, I think it's really fucking sick to get off on reading or writing that sort of thing, but what the hell--to each their own. I have interests that other people find disturbing, too. Not my place to judge. I am not the Internet Censor. I'm not going to tell anybody "I hate what you're writing STOP IT!" The back button is my friend.

Having clarified that crucial point, I don't see Silverwhistle's original comment of

Horrible. I've seen far too much historical fiction in which real-life characters are used as play-things for authorial kinks, and it leaves a nasty taste.

as being particularly trollish or flaming. Tactless, blunt and self-righteous, maybe, but hardly "OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!!1111one!". I can see banning her if she said something like "STFU you suck and need to go die now plzkthxbie", but for stating an honest (if unkind) opinion? Well, whatever. There are better communities out there.

Historical characters are real people. I find it repugnant that they should be used as play-things in a-historical sexual exploitation fantasies. (In this particular example, one of the characters is known to have been a lifelong virgin, on health grounds - but the author seemed to delight in inflicting sexual humiliation and rape. What kind of "fan" does that to a character s/he claims to love?)

Me! Me! Oh me! That would be me! XD

Having not read the fic, I can only say that I think it would be all sorts of cosmic justice for Guy de Lusignan to contract leprosy from the willy inwards and therefore I must heartily approve of anything that leads to such an outcome.

Of course, I also find much about the Templars creepy, except for the part where the ones living out in the Langedoc might have sort of tried to protect the Cathars from total annihilation.

Also, I am now filled with the urge to go read The Armor of Light again, which features Christopher Marlowe having the moves put on him by any number of inappropriate people as well as the Sexiest Mephistophiles Ever.

Ah, KoH wank! I saw the fic on the crosspost to koh_slash but I skipped it because while I thought Ed Norton was one of the best things in that movie, I just don't get into the leper fic much. However, I'm deeply amused by all of the people saying that the fic should have been posted over on koh_slash--"post it over there, where all of those degenerates hang out.

Honestly, if you're concerned about historical rape, you probably shouldn't watch the damned movie at all. Ridley Scott is many things; a historian isn't one of them.
